Dim light, silent giants.
The air was filled with a musty smell.
Moyuan and I quickly weaved between the bookshelves, finally stopping in front of an empty display stand.
If the academy's treasure were still here, it should have housed the legendary Sacred Artifact.
"Someone got here before us."
I crouched down, carefully examining the ground around the display stand.
The floor was covered in dust, with only our footprints visible.
The other party was clearly very familiar with the library.
"If the Sacred Artifact falls into the hands of the Underworld, the consequences would be unimaginable."
Moyuan furrowed his brow, his expression growing heavier.
We had to find it as soon as possible.
"We can only go find her."
I stood up and looked towards the door.
Moyuan knew who I was referring to: "Does she know the academy's history inside and out?"
"She is the librarian; she should know some details that we are unaware of."
I walked quickly towards the door.
Moyuan followed closely behind.
Just as we were about to leave, the library door suddenly slammed shut with a bang due to the wind.
Both Moyuan and I stopped in our tracks, cold sweat trickling down our backs.
"Could it be..."
Before Moyuan could finish his sentence, I took the lead towards the door.
Every step was taken cautiously.
A few meters away, the door was tightly closed, my hand feeling icy against it.
Through the glass on the door, we saw who was standing outside.
Lei Zhen—the academy's disciplinary committee member.
Everything became clear.
I pulled open the door and saw Lei Zhen looking at us with a blank expression.
His gaze was sharp, as if he could see right through us.
"What are you doing here?"
"This is a library, so naturally, we are here to do research."
Moyuan spoke up before I could respond.
Lei Zhen snorted coldly, "Research? Don't say I didn't warn you, curiosity can get you into trouble here."
"Thank you for the reminder, senior."
Moyuan gave a perfunctory smile and pulled me past him.
"I know you're not ordinary."
Lei Zhen's voice came from behind us.
"But I advise you to keep a low profile; the waters here run deep."
Moyuan and I exchanged a glance but ignored him and continued walking forward.
"You'll regret it."
Lei Zhen's voice echoed in the empty corridor.
...
"What an annoying guy."
Moyuan scratched the back of his head, looking displeased.
"He’s not wrong."
I stopped and looked at the deep darkness on one side of the corridor. "Our task is more daunting than we imagined."
"Are you scared?"
Moyuan looked at me with a smile in his eyes.
I shook my head, "I can no longer stand aside."
The moment I decided to get involved, I was already caught up in this conflict.
It's too late to back out now.
"I knew I wasn't wrong about you."
Moyuan patted my shoulder, looking pleased.
"Enough with the useless talk; let's find the Sacred Artifact first!"
I shrugged off his hand and walked deeper into the corridor.
"Are you so sure she will tell us?"
"She's waiting for us."
I was certain.
Moyuan looked confused, but I didn't have time to explain to him.
Because we had arrived.
At the end of the corridor, a slender figure was buried in a mountain of books.
She looked up, and her fair face came into view.
It was Ouyang Xue—the librarian of the academy.
"You've come," she said, putting down the ancient book in her hands and looking at me and Moyuan.
"It seems you've been waiting for us for a long time."
I gazed into her crystal-clear eyes.
Ouyang Xue did not respond, only smiled faintly.
"Do you know that the Sacred Artifact is missing?"
Moyuan, lacking patience for her riddles, got straight to the point.
"I know," Ouyang Xue replied, standing up with a suddenly sharp gaze.
"Are you here because of that matter?"
"What matter?" Moyuan pressed on.
Ouyang Xue did not answer but turned to look out the window.
"This matter is related to the legends of the academy."
"What legends?" Moyuan asked, growing more curious.
Ouyang Xue paused for a moment before softly saying, "A legend about evil spirits."
