I laughed. It seems that no matter how much time passes, I must always revolve around her in her heart.
Seeing that I didn't respond, she changed the subject, "How did you become the president of the Shen Group?" I replied casually, "My family runs it."
Gu Ning showed a surprised expression; she had also seen the statement released by the Shen Group about Chairman Shen finding his long-lost son. However, I was still recovering from my injuries at that time and kept a low profile, not appearing in front of the media. After saying that, I turned to leave, but Gu Ning stepped forward to stop me, asking for my WeChat ID, which I gave her without hesitation.
The next day, Gu Ning came to the company to find me.
"President Gu, do you need something?"
Seeing my cold demeanor, which was strictly businesslike, Gu Ning appeared quite flustered.
During the eight years I served as her bodyguard, I had always been gentle and considerate towards her. After a long pause, she finally managed to say, "I wanted to ask how to make century egg and lean meat congee." I used to make it for her often.
"There are recipes online; just search for it," I replied. Gu Ning looked at me with red-rimmed eyes and said, "Mu Yan, can you come back and continue being my boyfriend?"
I refused without hesitation, "No."
Gu Ning's eyes turned redder, and her expression was hurt.
Because a proud young lady like her had never bowed down to anyone, she couldn't accept my indifference towards her.
Moreover, in the past, whenever she waved her hand, I would run over like a little pug.
I knew Gu Ning didn't love me; she was just unaccustomed to my not loving her.
"Mu Yan." A sweet female voice rang out.
A pretty girl walked over and naturally linked her arm with mine.
"Aren't we supposed to go eat? I've been waiting for you in the car for a long time."
Gu Ning looked at Su Ying linking her arm with mine, somewhat incredulous, tears welling up in her eyes as she looked at me. "Who is she?"
Su Ying looked at Gu Ning and said, "Hello, President Gu. I've heard so much about you. I'm Mu Yan's girlfriend."
Gu Ning opened her mouth as if feeling wronged.
It seemed she thought that no matter how much she had hurt me in the past, I should always love her unconditionally. I ignored her and let Su Ying lead me away by the arm.
Once in the car, Su Ying smiled and said, "President Shen, with my acting skills being this good, aren't you going to give me a raise?"
I smirked, "Do you really need this little money?"
Su Ying was the daughter of a major shareholder in the company; after graduating, she said she wanted to be my assistant.
I didn't oppose it, thinking that someone from such a privileged background wouldn't last long. Unexpectedly, she had been by my side for almost two years.
Su Ying huffed, "I want to rely on myself." My smile deepened; both were daughters of wealthy families, but while Gu Ning had been spoiled since childhood, Su Ying was efficient, straightforward, and willing to work hard.
"I'll give you a raise next month."
After that day, Gu Ning would send me WeChat messages every day.
The content was mostly along the lines of "I miss you," "Good morning," or "Good night," and occasionally she'd act cute and ask why I wasn't replying to her.
However, I didn't see any of these because I had given Gu Ning my work number, which Su Ying managed for me. "Tsk tsk, I didn't expect that such a seemingly aloof and proud woman like Gu Ning could be so clingy."
Suddenly, Su Ying squinted her beautiful eyes at me and said, "President Shen, seeing your former goddess bowing her head to you—aren't you even a little moved?"
I raised an eyebrow and replied, "If you have the leisure to ponder this, why not go finish the report I asked for?"
Su Ying stuck out her tongue playfully. "As you command, President Shen."
When I got off work, Gu Ning blocked me in the parking lot with a pitiful look in her eyes.
"Why aren't you responding to my messages?"
I wore a cold expression on my face.
She awkwardly handed me the gift box in her hands, saying, "Today is your birthday, and this is your birthday present from me."
In the past, I would always feel happy receiving her birthday gifts each year.
I didn't take it and glanced at the logo on the box, speaking in a flat tone, "You've got the wrong person."
"No, I haven't. I like this brand too; it's not just because of Qin Yang..."
She paused mid-sentence, as if realizing she had misspoken, and then she started to cry.
"I was wrong before; I couldn't see my own heart clearly. I love you, Mu Yan. Will you come back?"
As she spoke, she reached out to hug me.
