After the competition ended, I walked out of the school gate and saw Si Xiang standing at the entrance. She had submitted her paper early. Si Nian, wearing a baseball cap and a mask that only revealed her rebellious eyes, had her hand resting on Si Xiang's shoulder. The two of them together were a striking contrast. Although Si Xiang's smile was very approachable, I felt that Si Nian was even more friendly.
I walked straight towards Si Nian, ignoring Si Xiang. When Si Xiang saw me approaching, a momentary smile appeared on her face, as if she was expecting something. However, when she saw me standing directly beside Si Nian, the smile on her face gradually faded, replaced by a somewhat lonely expression.
"How did you recognize me?" Si Nian asked in surprise. She had wrapped herself up so tightly that she thought I wouldn't be able to recognize her.
"Stubborn," I replied sullenly.
Si Nian laughed and patted my shoulder. "Come on, let me treat you to a meal."
I followed her as we headed to an ordinary noodle shop. Our actions were very natural, like friends who had known each other for years. Si Xiang's face looked somewhat pale.
"Do you want to come with us?" Si Nian asked her casually. "But don't complain if it's not good; this noodle shop is pretty average."
Si Xiang came from a wealthy family and was quite particular about food and drink. The noodle shop that Si Nian mentioned was definitely not to Si Xiang's taste. To everyone's surprise, Si Xiang agreed, though her voice was a bit hoarse. "Sure."
The owner of the noodle shop was very familiar with Si Nian and even gave us extra side dishes.
While Si Nian and I enjoyed our meal heartily, Si Xiang only took a few bites before putting down her chopsticks.
"What's wrong? Are you so used to delicacies that you can't handle what us common folks eat?"
Si Nian scoffed and handed her a bottle of mineral water. "Alright, you can go back now."
Si Xiang lowered her gaze to the bottle of water, a slight curve appearing at the corner of her lips.
"No need."
Her voice was cold, carrying a hint of distance.
"How... do you know her?"
Si Xiang suddenly asked me.
I glanced at Si Nian, who was lounging casually with her legs stretched out.
"She saved me twice, and I'm very grateful to her."
"Is that so?"
Si Xiang seemed somewhat skeptical.
Si Nian laughed and handed me a bottle of beer.
"Don't let her drink; she can't have alcohol."
Si Xiang instinctively intervened.
I shook my head. "I don't drink."
Si Nian raised an eyebrow. "No smoking, no drinking, but you're brave enough to take a knife against those who bully you. You're quite something."
"A knife?"
Si Xiang's expression changed. "What do you mean?"
Si Nian chuckled. "You don't know? Back then..."
"Si Nian!"
I shot her a glare, and she shrugged, not continuing.
Si Xiang didn't ask further; her expression was not good, clearly aware of what Si Nian was implying.
After dinner, Si Xiang was picked up by Uncle Wang.
Uncle Wang was the butler of the the Si Family and had worked there for many years, having watched Si Xiang grow up.
Her attitude towards Si Nian was not respectful; in fact, it carried a hint of resentment.
"How could you bring the young lady to a place like this?"
I couldn't help but step in front of Si Nian.
"Uncle Wang, at your age, do you still not understand your own identity? It's not appropriate to speak to Si Nian like that, is it?"
My words were somewhat offensive, and Si Nian was taken aback.
"You..."
Uncle Wang's face turned pale with anger as he glared at me.
"Do you really think something will happen? With your small frame, who can you stop?"
I was annoyed by Si Nian and glared at her fiercely.
"Alright," Si Xiang suddenly spoke up, "It's my choice to come along; it has nothing to do with her."
Uncle Wang felt a bit awkward but still left with Si Xiang.
Si Nian took a sip of her cold cola and pressed the remaining can against my cheek.
The coolness calmed my anger.
"Not angry anymore?"
She tilted her head to look at me.
I swatted her hand away, almost spilling the cola.
"Are you just going to let him misunderstand?"
Si Nian raised an eyebrow and smiled mischievously, "You already explained, so why should I bother?"
"Don't you have a mouth?"
I blurted out.
Si Nian was stunned for a moment before bursting into laughter, "Exactly! I don't have a mouth."
I fell silent.
Si Nian really didn't explain; she never did.
That's why she ended up in this situation.
Everyone thought she was a wicked scoundrel, and even after her death, no one mourned her.
"Si Nian, thank you."
I lowered my head and said softly, "Really, thank you."
