My family situation is actually quite good. Unfortunately, my parents are very biased.
"Why is that?" Xiao Li cried, struggling to catch her breath. "You gave all the relocation money to Xiao Ming and only got me a car, which you said you would buy for me later."
"No way, I want money too! I want a car! I don't care; I still have to pay off my credit card!"
I silently stood in the corner, watching my parents' expressions grow increasingly grim. My parents only have three children: the eldest sister, Xiao Li, the younger brother, Xiao Ming, and me, the second child.
Xiao Ming has been pampered since childhood, having everything handed to him without ever worrying about making a living. Xiao Li is only two years older than me and works as a nurse. She has a fiery personality and has been working for many years but has never contributed a single cent in support; in fact, she often asks our parents for money.
I graduated five years ago and have been working ever since, spending almost all my salary on the family without interruption. Yet my parents have never acknowledged that.
"Speak up! Don't play dead!" Xiao Li became even more agitated. "From childhood until now, whenever I asked you to buy me a bag, you refused. Now you’re willing to buy Xiao Ming a school district house right away. How can you be so biased?"
Xiao Ming rolled his eyes and said, "Xiao Li, have you forgotten? You've been working for eight years and have never given a single cent in support. What did you do with your earnings?"
"All you know is to ask for money."
"And don’t forget, our parents initially agreed that all the family assets would belong to me. Buying you a car is just because you're my sister; if you're not grateful and still complain, that's on you."
He turned to lecture me again: "Second sister, you need to think more about yourself and not always suffer in silence. Our parents are so biased; you need to fight for your rights."
Xiao Li shouted angrily: "Xiao Ming, can you have some conscience? Who has been doing all the household chores over the years? Haven't I bought enough gifts for our parents?"
Xiao Ming pouted, "Come on, that was your choice, right? Since you bought gifts for our parents, it's only fair they give you a car in return."
"And by the way, did I ask you to do housework? You're just showing off."
I bit my lip and mustered the courage to say to my mom, "Mom, I want a car too."
Even if it's a second-hand one.
My Mom said sternly, "Can't you see your brother is angry? Don't make things worse. If this keeps up, no one will get anything."
Xiao Ming shrugged nonchalantly, "Fine, that's the fairest way—no one gets anything. Anyway, our parents are getting old and won't need it; it'll all end up with me."
Xiao Li shouted angrily, "Xiao Ming, you're so selfish! Aren't you afraid of retribution? I'd rather our parents give us nothing and leave everything to you; it would just choke you!"
She wiped her tears and looked at our dad, who had been silent all along: "Dad, say something for me. You usually care for me the most; do you really think I'm wrong?"
Today’s family meeting was originally called by our parents to discuss buying a house with Xiao Li and Xiao Ming; I was just invited to express my opinion.
From the beginning, our parents stated that all family assets would belong to Xiao Ming. My older sister and I only had the obligation to support our parents without any inheritance rights.
We all accepted that.
So no matter how fiercely Xiao Li and Xiao Ming argued, I just sat aside and watched the drama unfold.
In any case, the final outcome had nothing to do with me.
But Xiao Ming kept urging me from the side: "Second sister, you should say something too. We're all siblings from the same mother; why are you letting her have it all?"
"I know you're easygoing, but you can't just stay silent about everything. If they bully you, you have to fight back; otherwise, you'll be controlled for life."
Because all along, I have been the quietest child in the family. I am obedient and sensible, never causing any trouble for my parents. I don't talk back like Xiao Li, nor do I stir up trouble like Xiao Ming. So when I took the initiative to ask my mom for the car, they were both stunned, as if they had never seen me before. My dad frowned and said, "Second child, why are you causing a fuss too?" My mom's expression was even more incredulous: "Second child, what are you talking about?"
