Burning fragments of the car frame were kicked away by the frenzied footsteps of the zombies. The monsters rushing in reached out their hands, seemingly trying to grab Ming Juan, who was crouched by the window.
"Run! Run!" The man pulled hard on Ming Juan's arm but was careful not to use too much force, shaking her body desperately instead.
However, Ming Juan seemed frozen, showing no reaction at all. The man glanced back at the nearby zombies, gritted his teeth, and pulled the safety off the Ability Gun.
Two zombies had already leaped forward. The man stepped left to block Ming Juan and raised his gun, immediately pulling the trigger.
He held an automatic weapon, and the aiming line swept across the necks of the two zombies. The blue laser bullet exploded on one zombie's neck, and both heads and bodies lazily fell to the ground.
One head rolled to the glass in front of Ming Juan, its grotesque expression still glaring at her.
Ming Juan looked down and screamed, sitting down on the ground, her hands trembling as she tried to pull herself back.
"Bang! Bang! Bang—"
The man continued firing the Ability Gun intermittently, but not everyone could shoot as accurately as Jiao An. After several shots, the recoil made it hard for him to control the gun.
The aim had gone sky-high.
Forced to stop shooting, just as he lowered his gun, a zombie lunged at him!
Faced with the gaping maw of the creature, the man displayed military-like reflexes. He horizontally positioned his gun and swiftly shoved it into the zombie's mouth!
Under the immense biting force, surprisingly, the gun did not make a sound as if steel were being broken. Even more astonishingly, despite facing such a fierce attack from the Soulless, the man's hands held firm!
If an ordinary person were pinned down by a zombie, the best outcome would be for their gun to be knocked away before their neck was bitten off.
However, the man gripped his gun tightly and even managed to push back against the zombie's relentless pressure.
In that moment of stalemate, several other zombies bypassed him and lunged directly at unarmed Ming Juan.
"Oh no!" The man turned his face and shouted at Ming Juan: "Run! Get up and run!"
Ming Juan looked at the approaching zombies and scrambled to her feet, running wildly toward the street.
But how could she outrun the pursuing zombies? She glanced back; several zombies were almost on her heels!
"Forget it..." Ming Juan decided not to run anymore; she chose to take a few small steps before preparing to stop.
For her last glimpse of life, she looked up at the sky. However, tonight there were only dense snowflakes; Miao Chengmin was nowhere to be seen.
"Child, run!" A woman's voice suddenly came from ahead!
Was it Ming Juan's hallucination?
"Whoosh!"
Several bullets flew past her ears toward the zombies behind her!
"Huh?" Ming Juan snapped back to reality; she felt no tearing pain in her body yet but heard the screams of zombies being torn apart behind her.
Under the streetlights in the dark night, two figures were vaguely approaching. Ming Juan didn't know who they were but figured they must have saved her.
"Wow..."
Fear instantly filled Ming Juan's face—there were more?!
A bullet just missed its target, failing to put the zombie down for good. The zombie was still trying to get up, its pale eyes fixed on Ming Juan.
"Ah—" Ming Juan quickly turned to run, but in her panic, her left leg tripped over her right, and she fell to the ground with a thud.
The zombie crawled toward Ming Juan, its decaying hand almost reaching her ankle!
In that moment of helplessness, a figure flashed into her line of sight and lifted the zombie up. This person seemed to consider not leaving any psychological scars on Ming Juan and deliberately turned the zombie away from her before delivering a powerful punch!
Although Ming Juan couldn't see it, the sound alone was terrifying enough.
"Sure enough, if you want to compete with me in marksmanship, you'll need to practice for several more years."
Nightmare approached slowly after Divine Fist dealt with the zombie, unlocking the visor of her helmet to reveal her sparkling eyes. She reached out her hand to Ming Juan like a gentle angel.
"It's okay now; stay with us, and you'll be safe," Nightmare said with a smile.
"Them?!"
The man was still holding the zombie's mouth shut, but his previously firm grip suddenly went limp. In such a critical moment, it was clear how surprised he was to be startled.
The zombie finally found an opportunity to spit out the gun; it yanked the weapon from the man's grasp and tossed it aside. The man snapped back to reality and grabbed the zombie's face with both hands, desperately digging his thumbs into its eye sockets!
The zombie couldn't see anything anymore, its claws flailing in front of the man, narrowly missing his throat several times as he dodged left and right.
But he still couldn't avoid…
"Clang!"
With a sudden strike, the zombie's claw knocked off the man's iron mask, which rolled away and wobbled on the road.
Divine Fist noticed that there was still someone struggling with another zombie in the distance and rushed forward, grabbing the zombie and slamming it against a nearby wall, crushing its skull.
The man let out a sigh of relief; without thinking twice or allowing himself time to think, he scrambled up to pick up the gun from the ground and walked away from Divine Fist with his back turned.
"You’re safe now." Just as Divine Fist turned around, he saw the man running toward a nearby alley.
What is he doing? Is he trying to get himself killed?
"Hey! Come back!" Divine Fist sprinted toward the man; there was no way he could let a civilian wander around in this zombie-infested area!
Of course, the man couldn't outrun Divine Fist; he could hear Divine Fist's footsteps getting closer…
There was no other choice…
Suddenly, the man turned around and raised his Ability Gun, aiming it at Divine Fist's forehead as he charged forward.
Divine Fist immediately stopped, staring wide-eyed at the silhouette in the darkness.
"What's this? Seems quite familiar…"
As Divine Fist pondered this, Nightmare's warning voice came from behind: "How about we see who pulls the trigger first?"
In Nightmare's scope, the red dot was locked onto the man's brow.
Ming Juan hid behind Nightmare, not daring to make a sound. She couldn't understand why this man would risk his life to save her but wouldn't let them help him and instead threatened them with a gun.
"Put down the gun!" Nightmare shouted. "We're all human; there's no need for violence!"
The man took a deep breath, said nothing, and released the trigger he was about to pull.
"How could I dare to face the world's strongest sniper, Jiao An?"
"Huh?!"
A thunderbolt of realization struck both Jiao An and Qin Weishan simultaneously. That deep voice was all too familiar!
"It can't be..." Qin Weishan stepped back. "You were supposed to be..."
"When did you see a news report stating that I was executed, Weishan?"
Taking advantage of Qin Weishan's retreat, the man stepped into the dim light. His hood was covered in frost, and his expression bore the weight of countless hardships over the years.
"I suppose you've only seen the police's bounty of eighteen million for my capture, right?"
Jiao An gripped the gun handle, remaining silent. The name displayed in his scope synchronized almost perfectly with what Qin Weishan had just said: "Liang Muqi."
"That's right."
Liang Muqi removed his hood, revealing wrinkles on his face that were starkly visible in the cold light. Over the years, in his desperate bid for survival, he had aged beyond recognition for someone in their forties. The white on his head was indiscernible—was it snow or his prematurely graying hair? His gaunt face, trembling lips, and dull eyes all told Jiao An and Qin Weishan of the suffering he had endured since becoming a fugitive.
We would never know how this condemned man escaped nor why he had inadvertently ended up in this city over the past three years, becoming a victim of this war. Perhaps for him, it was all part of some divine arrangement.
"Rather than fleeing, you might as well just end it all," Qin Weishan said as he loosened his clenched fist. "Do you think living every day in fear is easy?"
"With faith, one is invincible," Liang Muqi replied. "I remember telling this to An Xiaotian."
Qin Weishan lunged forward and grabbed Liang Muqi by the collar, seething with anger as he glared fiercely into Liang Muqi's eyes. "You don't deserve to live! Do you understand? You betrayed your country and us just to satisfy your curiosity. People like you have no right to exist in this world!"
Liang Muqi gently placed his hand on Qin Weishan's armored fist. "Don't forget that your gear is a product of my intellect."
Fuming with rage, Qin Weishan raised his fist to strike Liang Muqi's face when Jiao An immediately cautioned him: "Weishan, don't be impulsive! We don't have time!"
Liang Muqi didn't even blink.
Reluctantly, Qin Weishan released Liang Muqi's collar and checked his watch.
"Eighteen minutes."
Jiao An and Qin Weishan exchanged glances before quickly pulling the bewildered Ming Juan toward the city's edge.
"Uncle Liang!" Ming Juan looked back at Liang Muqi standing there.
"Don't mind him!" Jiao An tugged at Ming Juan's hand deliberately.
"But..." Ming Juan wanted to explain how Uncle Liang had saved her.
"The nearest evacuation point in that direction is still ten kilometers away. I’m not worried about you two making it there in one go, but what about this little girl?"
Jiao An and Qin Weishan turned back to look at Liang Muqi and then glanced at Ming Juan they were holding onto.
"I'll carry her!" Qin Weishan shouted at Liang Muqi—he had run with a heavy load before.
"And!"
Liang Muqi called out to the three who were about to start.
"Do you really think she's the only one who hasn't evacuated?"
Jiao An paused for a moment, then was the first to react. "Are there others?"
Feeling a tug on her arm from Ming Juan, Jiao An turned to her, asking what was wrong.
"Just now, when Uncle Liang saved me, he said there were many more," Ming Juan said, her voice tinged with tears.
Ming Juan was just a civilian; she had never experienced anything like this before. Now, she listened fearfully to the sounds around her, terrified that more zombies might come rushing in.
Liang Muqi sighed, white mist slowly escaping from his mouth as he said, "You won't let me go, nor will you leave them behind, right?"
"What if they are your people?" Jiao An had already considered this possibility.
With a thud, Liang Muqi spread his hands wide, and the Ability Gun slipped from his grip and fell to the ground.
"I could have left here before the war started, but seeing those panicked refugees running home made me realize I no longer had the courage to abandon them," Liang Muqi lowered his head and slowly let his hands drop.
"I'm not going to waste time with you. If you want these refugees to evacuate safely, then please... trust me one last time. Everyone deserves a chance to change; I hope this time it can be mine."
As he finished speaking, a tear as big as a bean rolled down Liang Muqi's cheek. In these years of fleeing for his life, he had never thought about surrendering; but it wasn't just about surviving—he wanted to prove himself and earn one last chance from fate.
The hardest thing in this world isn't doing something earth-shattering; it's being a good person for a lifetime. Clearly, Liang Muqi had failed at that.
But he was willing to try again, even if it meant risking his life this time. In the past, he had allied with the Viper Organization to obtain lunar elements; now he was seeking atonement for his past actions.
That was all there was to it.
Jiao An and Qin Weishan silently watched him until Jiao An finally broke the silence. "Take us there."
Qin Weishan suddenly thought of something. "You just said the nearest one is ten kilometers away; what do we do about that?"
"That's in your direction," Liang Muqi replied as he gestured for the three to follow him toward the direction he had just walked with Ming Juan.
