After school, I slowly packed my backpack, reminiscing about the route from home to school while taking Uncle's car in the morning. I planned to try walking home later. Just as I stepped out of the classroom, Zhang Yun pulled me toward the playground. Confused, I asked, "Where are you taking me, Zhang Yun? I need to go home for dinner." With a mysterious look, Zhang Yun replied, "Don't ask, I'm just helping you get familiar with our beautiful campus!" I didn't believe her.
Before long, she led me to the basketball court. Following her gesture, I saw Uncle, Shen Yulin, Cheng Haifeng, Mr. Wu, and several classmates playing basketball. When I arrived, Shen Yulin had just made a three-pointer, causing a group of girls on the sidelines to cheer.
I was squeezed by the crowd and suddenly pushed from behind. I lost my balance and fell forward, landing at the edge of the basketball court. Just as I was about to get up, a sharp pain in my palm made me cry out. Looking at the blood oozing from my hand, I felt a wave of regret.
A hand reached out to me; I looked up and saw Shen Yulin. The intense game had left him drenched in sweat, his white sports tank top clinging to him. He looked at me with concern and said, "Are you okay? Don't sit on the ground; let me help you up." Uncle and Cheng Haifeng rushed over as well. I placed my hand on Shen Yulin's for support and stood up, brushing off the dust. "I'm fine."
Zhang Yun managed to squeeze through the crowd and rushed over. "Are you okay? Xingxing! Those people were terrifying; they literally pushed me out!" She looked around me anxiously while I felt embarrassed and wished for a hole to hide in. Seeing my state, Uncle turned back to the players still on the court and shouted, "We're done here; I'm leaving now. If I don't take care of this kid, my wife won't let me sleep in bed tonight." Everyone burst into laughter.
Thank you so much, Uncle. I lowered my head and quickly left the basketball court. In the end, I still took Uncle's car home, completely abandoning my plan to walk back. Once home, I couldn't help but think about Zhang Yun countless times.
My aunt was worried that I wouldn't adapt well on my first day of school, so she brought Shen Xiuyu over for dinner. To my surprise, Shen Yulin appeared at my doorstep with Shen Xiuyu. Seeing my shocked expression, he smiled and said, "What's wrong? Aren't you going to welcome me?"
It turned out that Shen Yulin was Uncle's youngest brother. He had known about my relationship with Uncle all along. No wonder he seemed so familiar when we first met. No wonder he cared so much about me on the basketball court.
I didn't dare think too much about it as I welcomed them inside and went to the kitchen to serve food. Throughout dinner, everything tasted bland as I zoned out completely unaware of their lively conversation. After eating, I retreated to the balcony alone without turning on the light, letting the cold sea breeze envelop me. I instinctively tightened my down jacket when the balcony door was gently pushed open. Shen Yulin leaned against the doorframe and lit a cigarette; in the darkness, I couldn't see his expression clearly.
"Fanxing," he called softly, "Hmm?" "You still haven't answered my question." Confused, I looked at him and asked, "What question?" "You said you're a star for many people or just one person?"
I was momentarily speechless.
"Is that question too difficult?"
"Or are you a star that accidentally fell to Earth, always searching for your way home?"
I chose not to answer any of his three questions. Shen Yulin extinguished his cigarette and threw it away before turning back inside.
In that moment, I finally found some peace; however, my heart remained restless for a long time. When I truly realized that in this fleeting time there were memories not only of the refreshing morning air but also of our dreamlike story together.
