After a while, I finally came out of the bathroom. It seemed like no one in the house noticed, but I couldn't see his figure anywhere.
"Xiu Yu, where's your uncle?" I asked my younger brother, who was focused on his food.
"He just left, said he was going to see grandma," Shen Xiuyu replied, chewing with his mouth full.
I couldn't help but sigh. He didn't even say goodbye! The more I thought about it, the angrier I became. Am I really that insignificant?
Feeling frustrated, I didn't even want to watch the fireworks. When the countdown began, I ignored my aunt's family outside and turned back into my bedroom. Closing the door, I lay on my bed, growing more upset by the minute. I picked up a stuffed toy from my bedside and started punching and kicking it. After venting for a while, I felt a little better and unknowingly fell asleep.
On the morning of the third day of the Lunar New Year, I received a call from Zhang Yun: "Xingxing, the class monitor is inviting everyone to sing tonight. You should come too! I'll wait for you downstairs at seven. Let's go together."
I wanted to ask if Shen Yulin was going, but what came out was, "Okay, see you tonight."
What should I do when we meet? What if we don't meet? Forget it; let's just have fun and stop thinking about him.
So, I dressed up carefully. I chose a camel-colored turtleneck knitted dress from my wardrobe, paired it with a short down vest and white Martin boots. I pinned my hair up with hairpins and applied a light orange lip gloss. Everything was ready!
At seven o'clock, I went downstairs on time and saw Zhang Yun at the entrance of the community, dressed like a big red envelope and shivering there. I couldn't help but laugh as I walked over, holding my stomach.
"Oh my gosh, Xingxing! You look so beautiful today! Your hair looks great, your lip gloss looks great, your outfit..." Zhang Yun started chattering again, and I quickly interrupted her.
"Stop, stop! You're beautiful too; don't talk about me. Let's go! It's freezing." Zhang Yun pouted in disbelief as I pulled her along.
The KTV where the class monitor was treating us was next to the school. According to Zhang Yun, it had just opened not long ago; the place was clean and mostly filled with students. There were both a hall and private rooms available at reasonable prices, and their snacks were particularly delicious.
"1023. Xingxing, this is it." Zhang Yun pulled me to the front of a private room and pushed open the door. The lights were bright and warm inside, with singing and laughter intertwining in the air. When Shen Yulin saw me, his eyes sparkled as if he had found the most precious treasure.
I felt his gaze on me and couldn't help but feel an inexplicable flutter in my heart.
How pathetic am I! Annoyed with myself, I turned my gaze away and followed Zhang Yun to our seats.
Shen Yulin walked up to the microphone and chose to sing "Lovesick Absolute." His voice was clear and magnetic; as soon as he started singing, he captured everyone's attention in the room. The melody echoed through the space like a refreshing stream cleansing everyone's soul.
I listened quietly, immersed in his singing while my heart unconsciously raced. Shen Yulin's gaze felt like a soft beam of light shining on me; thinking about how he saw me as a sister made my feelings of unease and sadness feel like an untangling mess that was hard to resolve. Despite trying to tell myself to accept this fact calmly, the disappointment in my heart couldn't be hidden. Shen Yulin regarded me as a sister; this realization brought me deep frustration and loss.
In his eyes, I was no longer someone special but just an ordinary friend; this shift left me feeling empty inside.
"Xingxing, what do you want to drink?" Zhang Yun turned to ask me.
"Coke is fine," I replied casually.
"Stop staring," she nudged my hand gently. Coming back to reality, I looked at her apologetically.
