Until my lungs were emptied again, we finally parted. I leaned against him, feeling weak, enjoying the sweetness of our world together.
"Xingxing, please don't do this to me," Shen Yulin pleaded. "I can't stand you being like this with Liao Jian. You're mine; you can't do this!"
I looked at him in silence, feeling that I had hurt him but unable to argue back.
"Xingxing, what did he just say to you on the Ferris wheel?" Shen Yulin asked as he held me close.
"I... I agreed to give him a chance to pursue me." As I said this, I saw Shen Yulin's expression change from grievance to anger. I quickly explained, "But I didn't promise him anything. His pursuit is his freedom; I have no right to interfere, but whether I agree or not is up to me."
Despite my efforts to explain, a sense of desolation washed over Shen Yulin's face. He let go of me and simply said, "We're here."
I realized the Ferris wheel had stopped. By the time I wanted to explain further, it was too late; I could only follow him silently as we got off the ride.
As night fell and the amusement park lit up brightly, our day's outing came to an end. Since getting off the Ferris wheel, Shen Yulin hadn't spoken to me again. My heart felt heavy; even when Liao Jian tried various ways to cheer me up, I could only manage a perfunctory smile without expressing much.
Zhang Yun noticed my disheartened state and was at a loss for what to do, so she and Cheng Haifeng whispered together in the background.
At the entrance of the amusement park, Liao Jian suggested giving me a ride home, but I firmly declined, saying I wanted some time alone. After we said our goodbyes, I walked home by myself.
While crossing the street, someone hurriedly brushed past me and accidentally bumped into my briefcase. Just as I was about to fall, a pair of hands caught me.
"I'm so sorry!" The person apologized before quickly leaving. I recognized that familiar scent of vanilla from those hands immediately. Without looking up, I lowered my head and couldn't help but let tears stream down my face, feeling overwhelmed with grievance.
"Don't cry." The owner of those hands wiped away my tears and held me tightly in his arms. Listening to his strong heartbeat helped calm my emotions gradually. Realizing we were still on the road made me shy, and I pushed him away gently.
Yes, the owner of those hands was Shen Yulin. After everyone said their goodbyes earlier, he hadn’t gone home but had been following me from behind, worried that something might happen to me. I had known he was there all along; I just hadn’t said anything. Now that he was here, I felt much better inside.
"There won't be a next time, Xingxing," he said, looking at me intently. I nodded and silently let him hold my hand as we walked home.
Once home, I received a call from Zhang Yun.
"Xingxing, what do you think about Liao Jian?" Zhang Yun asked.
"I... how should I put it? I don't feel much for him," I replied calmly with my true feelings.
"So you still like Third Master?" Zhang Yun said.
"Yeah, I can't let go of him, Zhang Yun. I don't know what to do," I answered helplessly.
"We're still young; there will be many opportunities in the future. Don't get too attached to him. Try to restrain your feelings a bit, okay?" Zhang Yun advised patiently.
I agreed absentmindedly, "When the new semester starts, I'll try to keep some distance from him."
After hanging up the phone, my hesitation vanished; with the new semester approaching, it was time to maintain some distance.
