With the spring rain nurturing the earth, the new semester was about to begin. Aside from frantically finishing my winter break homework every day, I hardly went outside, staying at home to rest and reflect. On the day of registration, I finally completed my assignments and sat in the classroom looking defeated.
"You didn't spend several days rushing your homework, did you?" Zhang Yun asked with a laugh.
I replied irritably, "Aren't you?"
"Hehe, I only wrote for two days. Aren't you jealous?" Zhang Yun shot me a glare. When I didn’t respond, she mysteriously said, "I heard we're changing seats this semester. Did you know?"
I was taken aback. "Changing seats?"
"Yeah, by height," Zhang Yun said excitedly. "Looks like we'll be far away from Shen, the Third Master!"
Seeing Zhang Yun so happy made me feel a bit down; it seemed fate had decided we would be separated.
Sure enough, when our homeroom teacher, Mr. Zhang, walked in, the first thing he did was call everyone out to the hallway to line up by height for a seat rearrangement. Miraculously, after the adjustments, Zhang Yun and I ended up sitting together again, while Cheng Haifeng and Shen Yulin were moved to the neighboring group behind us. Watching their resentful expressions, Zhang Yun and I stifled our laughter.
Someone poked me in the back. I turned around and was surprised to see Liao Jian sitting behind me. His eyes were gleaming with delight as he said, "So lucky to sit next to you."
I smiled at him but didn’t reply. As I turned back around, I caught a glimpse of Shen Yulin looking in our direction. Pretending not to see him, I focused on the lesson.
When class ended, as Zhang Yun and I stood up to head to the restroom, we encountered a cute girl with long hair and bangs peeking into our classroom.
"Excuse me, could you help me call Shen Yulin?" she asked as she grabbed my arm.
Realizing she was looking for Shen Yulin, I hesitated for a moment before nodding.
"Shen Yulin! Someone's looking for you!" I called back.
Shen Yulin, who had been chatting happily with Cheng Haifeng, looked up and walked out with a serious expression. Seeing him come out made Zhang Yun and me turn away quickly. As we walked away, I couldn’t help but glance back at them; I saw the girl holding Shen Yulin's hand and whispering sweetly to him while acting all coy. I silently turned back and continued walking forward.
"That's Lu Pingping," Zhang Yun told me.
I felt as if cold water had been poured over me; an icy chill spread through my body as all my negative emotions—unease, fear, jealousy, disappointment—flooded out. Unable to hold it in any longer, I grabbed Zhang Yun's hand and trembled uncontrollably.
"Zhang Yun, I'm scared." I wanted to cry but held back since there were people around us.
"Hang in there; he's not worth it!" Zhang Yun comforted me. In the end, we embraced before heading into the restroom.
We arrived late to class when the bell rang. While listening to the lecture, a small note flew onto my desk. Taking advantage of the teacher's distraction, I opened it to find familiar handwriting: What's wrong?
I folded it back up and put it in my pencil case as if I hadn’t seen it. Soon after, another note was thrown my way. Opening it revealed: Why aren’t you replying?
Knowing I should keep my distance from him, I chose not to respond again. After two ignored notes, he stopped sending them altogether. I also avoided talking to him.
I began dodging Shen Yulin; even in unavoidable situations, I tried not to be alone with him. After school, I had Zhang Yun accompany me home. This game of hide-and-seek lasted for two months until our school's annual sports meet arrived. Cheng Haifeng, our physical education representative, made an exception during class meetings by boldly declaring his intention to win first place for our grade in this sports meet. Listening to his grandiose claims stirred my blood; however, being naturally clumsy in sports meant that I couldn’t contribute much—so I opted to be a competent worker instead.
