After school, I strolled towards the basketball court and saw Shen Yulin standing there, focused on shooting hoops. The sunlight cast a golden glow on his tall figure.
When he noticed me standing by the court, he raised his hand to wipe the sweat off his face, tossed the ball to a teammate, and walked over to me. I handed him a bottle of water, and he opened it and gulped it down in one go.
"Do you have any plans for the summer vacation?" I asked him with a smile.
"What good suggestions do you have?" Shen Yulin looked at me curiously.
"I want to get a part-time job."
"I don't agree." I shot him a playful glare. "What do you need to agree on for me to get a part-time job?"
"Xingxing, we're still too young; it's not safe. Can we wait until college?" I nodded in response.
Suddenly, Shen Yulin leaned closer to me, his face just a few centimeters away from mine. "Xingxing, have you grown taller?"
I touched my nose and shyly nodded. Ever since my period started, I felt like my appetite had increased significantly, and my body had changed a lot.
"What are you two doing?"
I jumped in surprise and quickly pushed Shen Yulin away. Looking up, I saw Uncle standing not far away, his mouth agape in shock.
Oh no. My heart sank.
I glanced at Shen Yulin; he had a blank expression and simply called out, "Bro."
I slowly lowered my head, bracing myself for Uncle's stormy reprimand.
"You two come with me." Uncle looked at us sternly before turning to leave.
"What should we do?" I gently tugged at Shen Yulin's shirt.
"Don't worry; I'll handle it." He gave me a reassuring look and pulled me along to follow Uncle.
Once we entered the office, it was empty since all the teachers had left after school. Uncle closed the door behind us and sat down at his desk, motioning for us to pull up chairs and sit across from him.
"Now tell me, what's going on with you two?" Uncle crossed his arms over his chest and waited silently for our response.
"Bro, I like Xingxing," Shen Yulin answered firmly.
I had been looking down nervously, but upon hearing Shen Yulin's confession, I looked up at him. This was the first time I heard him admit that he liked me. It should have been a romantic moment, but reality was different.
"Do you know who Xingxing is? She's your sister-in-law's niece!"
"I know."
"You are still so young and lack the ability to handle emotions. I'm worried you might get hurt or it could affect your studies!"
"It’s my one-sided affection; I’m pursuing her."
"You’re pursuing her? You know your mom..." Uncle's words trailed off as he swallowed them back.
"I know, and I will protect her," Shen Yulin replied calmly.
What does this have to do with Shen Yulin's mother? I looked at the two of them in confusion.
"Xingxing, you should go back first. I will talk to your aunt about this," Uncle said seriously, looking at me. I nodded, slowly stood up, and turned back to glance at Shen Yulin three times before opening the office door to head home.
After I closed the door, Uncle's fist landed hard on Shen Yulin's face. Shen Yulin stumbled and fell to the ground. He struggled to get up, still sitting in the chair, reaching up to touch the corner of his mouth. It was bleeding.
"What kind of family background do you have? What kind of family background does Xingxing have? Don't you know what your mother's personality is like? If she finds out, what will happen to Xingxing? Do you even have a brain?"
"I told you, I will protect her. As long as you don’t say anything, my mom won’t find out."
"You protect her? What do you have to protect her with? You're not even an adult yet; how can you protect her?"
At this point, Shen Yulin fell silent.
Indeed, what ability does he have to protect Xingxing, the star that lights up his life? He has nothing but this body and a heart that loves her.
