Zhang Yun looked at the marks on my wrist from the rope and gently touched them. "Does it still hurt?"
"Not anymore, it's much better."
"How could you suddenly run into such a human trafficker? If you ask me, being pretty is also a kind of trouble."
My aunt, overhearing this, laughed heartily beside me. "If that's the case, then all the beauties in the world must be guilty!"
Zhang Yun playfully stuck out her tongue.
After chatting with us for a while, my aunt went to the kitchen to prepare dinner. Zhang Yun leaned in close to my ear and whispered, "The Third Master hasn't been to school for several days. Did you know that?"
I was taken aback. Shen Yulin hadn't been to school for days?
"I wouldn't have known if you hadn't told me. Uncle didn't mention it either."
"I heard some classmates talking about it. Apparently, he's had some disagreements with his family. A classmate who lives in the same neighborhood as the Third Master said that one day he came home and heard them arguing loudly inside."
I didn't know how to respond at first; anxiety surged within me. After thinking for a moment, I stood up and walked into the kitchen. "Aunt, do you know what Shen Yulin has been up to lately? I heard he hasn't been to school for several days."
My aunt was busy in the kitchen with her back to me, so I couldn't see her expression. After I asked my question, I felt her pause for a moment before she casually replied, "Maybe there's something going on at home."
Her answer made me suspicious, so I pressed further. "Aunt, does Uncle know that Shen Yulin hasn't been attending classes?"
"That's something I'm not sure about. Why don't you ask him?"
"Alright." My intuition told me that my aunt knew more than she was letting on, but why wouldn't she tell me?
Zhang Yun and I discussed calling Uncle to ask about the situation. As we waited for the call to connect, I felt anxious.
"Hello."
"Uncle."
"Xiao Fan? What's up?"
"Uncle, do you know that Shen Yulin hasn't been to school these past few days?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line.
"Uncle? Uncle?" I called out anxiously.
"Yulin has been feeling unwell these past few days and is taking sick leave at home," Uncle finally said after a long hesitation, giving a vague reason while glancing at Shen Yulin sitting beside him.
"What’s wrong with him? Is it a cold? A fever? Or..."
"Xiao Fan, you don't need to worry about that."
"But..."
"Xiao Fan, taking care of yourself is the most important thing right now. Uncle has some things to take care of, so I'll hang up now."
I was about to say something else when I heard the dial tone on the other end.
"What did he say?" Zhang Yun asked as I hung up the phone.
"He said Shen Yulin is unwell and took a leave."
"Do you believe that?" I shrugged, noncommittal.
Even though Uncle said that, it planted a seed of doubt in my mind. I felt like my aunt and Uncle were hiding something from me, but no matter how much I pressed them, they wouldn't tell me.
After a week of rest, I was almost fully recovered. The marks on my wrist were barely visible, so I decided to go back to school today. I had missed a lot of classes and needed to catch up.
When I arrived in the classroom, my classmates surrounded me, expressing their concern for my well-being. Zhang Yun finally managed to pull me to my seat, and Cheng Haifeng leaned over: "Fanxing, you're feeling better, right?"
"Much better."
"I have to tell you something really shocking! Fanxing, you can't say I told you this or I'll be in big trouble!"
"What is it?" Both Zhang Yun and I asked in unison.
"Third Master is transferring schools!"
"What!" I stood up in shock. "Why?"
"I don't know the reason for the transfer. I just happened to pass by the academic affairs office yesterday and overheard them talking about Director Ke's son handling transfer procedures. Then it hit me—Director Ke's son! Isn't that Shen Third Master?"
