I pushed past Cheng Haifeng and rushed out of the classroom. Zhang Yun shouted behind me, "Xingxing, hurry up! Class is starting, where are you going?" I didn't look back and jogged straight to the office. I saw Uncle deeply focused on writing something at his desk, so I quickly walked over. "Uncle."
"Mm? It's Xiao Fan. What do you need?"
"Uncle, I know everything! Why is Shen Yulin transferring schools? Why didn't you tell me?" My emotions suddenly surged, and the surrounding teachers turned to look at me. Uncle sensed something was wrong and immediately took me out of the office. Once we reached the edge of the playground, he let go of me. Seeing my tear-streaked face, he sighed softly, "Xiao Fan, it's not that we're hiding it from you. Yulin instructed us not to tell you."
"Why not tell me? What exactly happened?"
"Ah, Xiao Fan, just don't ask. You and Yulin need to come to a conclusion."
"What conclusion? I never said I wanted to end things with him! How could he just leave without a word? How could he treat me like this!" The more I spoke, the more agitated I became, clenching my fists and glaring at Uncle.
"Xiao Fan, please don't make this difficult for me. I can't say anything."
"Uncle, I'm begging you. Please tell me! I want to know why; I don't want to be left in the dark..." I covered my face and cried uncontrollably, feeling as if the support in my heart had collapsed.
"Xiao Fan, stop crying. In this world, there are gatherings and separations; people come and go—it's beyond our control. Uncle only wants what's best for you; try to understand."
"Uncle, I want to see him."
...
On Saturday afternoon, I sat in the park across from my neighborhood, staring blankly at a small wildflower spinning in my hand. Feeling a shadow cast beside me, I looked up to see Shen Yulin standing next to me, equally expressionless.
Seeing his thin face, I couldn't help but throw myself into his arms, inhaling the familiar scent of vanilla on him as tears filled my eyes.
"Shen Yulin, I've missed you so much. Did you miss me?"
"I did." His voice was hoarse, as if he was forcing it out from his throat.
"Why are you transferring schools?" I looked up at him; his gaze slightly avoided mine. "Xingxing, you already know?"
"So you planned to hide it from me and leave quietly?"
"Forget about me, Xingxing. I'm not suitable for you."
I couldn't believe he would say such a thing. We had been so happy together before—he accompanied me to visit graves and went hiking with me; he showed up just in time when I was in danger. Everything seemed fine...
He pushed me away, and I stumbled back two steps, feeling utterly dejected. "So all along it was just me being overly sentimental?" I bit my lip and lowered my head. Yes, I was afraid to see his eyes turn cold and distant; I didn't want to face that version of him.
"Xingxing, you're a good girl. I'll be leaving here soon; just forget about me." With that, he turned and walked away.
I wanted to reach out for him, but tears blurred my vision; I couldn't see his figure clearly as I fell to the ground repeatedly calling his name. Someone passed by and tried to help me up; I grabbed her hand pleading for her to help me keep Shen Yulin.
"Slap!" A crisp sound echoed as a hand struck my face. Covering my cheek, I finally saw who it was—it was my aunt, her eyes filled with concern.
"Aunt..." I cried as I threw myself into her arms.
I knew that this time I had truly lost Shen Yulin. Although I really wanted to know the reason for his departure, I understood that we would never meet again. My entire world lost its color from that moment on, leaving only a gray void, as if I were trapped in an endless abyss of darkness, unable to escape no matter how hard I tried.
From that day on, I never saw him again; it was as if he had never existed in my world. We breathed under the same sky, and it felt like I could still feel his warmth in my embrace, yet he was not by my side.
