The sunlight streamed through the café's glass window, casting a warm glow on Li Chen's face as he sat at a corner table, scrolling through photos on his phone. Although the atmosphere of the gathering made him feel cozy, thoughts of the mysterious person lingered in his mind. Just as he was lost in contemplation, the bell at the door jingled, drawing his attention.
"Li Chen!" A clear voice broke his silence. Li Chen looked up to see a familiar figure approaching him—his childhood friend, Xiao Yu.
"Long time no see, Xiao Yu!" Li Chen stood up excitedly to greet her.
Xiao Yu wore a simple white T-shirt and jeans, a faint smile on her face, but her eyes revealed a hint of fatigue and melancholy. "I haven't seen you in ages! How have you been?"
"I'm doing okay, just a bit troubled," Li Chen replied, gesturing to the seat next to him. "Why don't you sit down and have a cup of coffee?"
After sitting down, Xiao Yu ordered a latte and gently stroked her cup, seemingly deep in thought. Li Chen noticed her expression and felt a twinge of concern. "Are you doing alright? I heard you've been through a rough patch in your relationship."
"Yeah, that's true." Xiao Yu sighed softly. "I broke up with my boyfriend, and it's been tough, but I'm trying to regain my confidence in life."
"I understand; breakups are always painful," Li Chen comforted her. "But you have to believe that there will always be new beginnings."
Xiao Yu nodded and lifted her head, determination shining in her eyes. "Thank you, Li Chen. Actually, I'm also trying to find some new directions."
Li Chen thought for a moment before deciding to share his recent troubles with Xiao Yu. "Actually, I've captured a photo of a mysterious person recently; there's something unusual about him."
Xiao Yu's curiosity was piqued as she leaned forward slightly. "A mysterious person? That sounds interesting! What kind of person is he?"
Li Chen pulled out his phone and brought up the blurry photo to show Xiao Yu. "This is him; I accidentally captured him while shooting. His gaze felt off to me."
Xiao Yu stared at the photo, her brow furrowing slightly. "I think I've seen him somewhere before; he seems to appear frequently in my social circles lately. I've noticed his comments in several groups; he always seems to be involved in some debates."
"You noticed too?" Li Chen felt a tightening in his chest as he realized the complexity of the situation. "I was thinking of investigating him further to see if I could find any clues."
"Why don't we investigate together?" Xiao Yu suggested, a spark of adventure lighting up her eyes. "I've been looking for some excitement lately; this could be a good distraction."
"Great idea!" Li Chen nodded in agreement, feeling a sense of relief at having a like-minded friend by his side during this time.
The two began searching for information about the mysterious person on social media. Li Chen opened his laptop while Xiao Yu used her phone for searches. They entered the mysterious person's name across various platforms and gradually pieced together some information about him.
"Look here!" Xiao Yu exclaimed excitedly, pointing at the screen. "This person has recently participated in discussions about mental health and posted about missing persons cases."
Li Chen immediately leaned closer to examine those posts. The mysterious person seemed active in groups focused on mental health issues, sharing opinions and sometimes even steering discussions. "These posts seem quite profound but also vague; it feels like he's intentionally guiding the conversation."
"Right, I feel the same way," Xiao Yu agreed with a nod. "And I've noticed that some of his friends' accounts appear to belong to people who are concerned about mental health issues; it seems like he has a small circle."
Li Chen grew increasingly uneasy as he recalled what Uncle Zhang had mentioned about those missing persons cases earlier. "Should we check out these friends' profiles to see if anything looks suspicious?"
"Good idea." Xiao Yu began reviewing each friend's social media accounts while Li Chen continued monitoring the mysterious person's activities.
As their investigation deepened, they realized that this mysterious person seemed to have started paying attention to their inquiries, and their adventure was just beginning.
