At eight-thirty in the morning, sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, casting dappled shadows across the room. My phone alarm, which I had thrown on the floor, rang out with a crisp and piercing sound. The sudden noise jolted me awake from my dreams, and my thoughts gradually became clearer. I forced myself out of the warm cocoon of my blankets, picked up my phone, and turned off the annoying alarm.
My mind was still lingering in the dream world, leaving me feeling a bit dazed.
The phone vibrated again; it was an unfamiliar landline number. I pressed the answer button. "Hello, who is this?"
"Hello, Miss Fanxing. This is the Human Resources Department of Chengxing Group. You have passed the interview. Please report to the HR department tomorrow morning at eight o'clock. Thank you."
"Okay, thank you." If I hadn't known that Shen Yulin was back, receiving this call would have made me very happy. But now, the pain in my heart intertwined like a tangled mess, leaving me feeling helpless and confused about how to face everything.
Rubbing my tired eyes, I walked into the bathroom to wash up. Since no one had lived in the house for a long time, there were no ingredients prepared for meals. Ultimately, I chose to take a taxi back to my dormitory. When I returned, only Zhang Yun was there; I walked over to my bed to pack my clothes.
"Xingxing, I'm sorry," Zhang Yun said softly.
I didn't turn around and continued packing.
"Xingxing, I didn't mean to hide it from you, really. I only found out later that it was Shen Yulin who took you home that day. Please don't be angry," Zhang Yun said gently as she tugged at the hem of my shirt, pleading with me.
I finally stopped what I was doing and turned to look at her. Her eyes were red-rimmed, and there was a hint of regret in her gaze as she slightly lowered her head.
"Chengxing Group has hired me; I'll be moving out of the dormitory in a couple of days."
"Why are you moving? Where will you live?" Zhang Yun's breath quickened suddenly; her chest rose and fell rapidly as beads of sweat rolled down her forehead and flowed down her cheeks. Her fingers were tightly clenched, almost digging into her palms.
"I'm going back home."
"Xingxing, I'm really regretting this now; I'm so guilty. Please don't ignore me," she pleaded.
I sighed deeply. "There won't be a next time."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Yun's lips curled slightly upward; her previously dull red-rimmed eyes suddenly sparkled with a glimmer of hope that made one feel pity for her. "Xingxing, I'm really sorry. If there's no next time, can you not move away?"
I shook my head and said, "I don't want to live on campus anymore. Since I've started working, I need to learn to be independent. If you want to see me, you can come stay with me."
"The sea breeze is already looking for houses; we plan to buy a place here."
"That's great."
"Xingxing, what do you think of him..."
"I don't know." Before Zhang Yun could finish her sentence, I interrupted her. "I don't want to talk about him." My lips were tightly sealed, and my expression appeared indifferent and weary as if all my energy had been completely drained.
It wasn't until noon that I finished packing my things; hunger hit me like a tidal wave. Zhang Yun and I went to explore the food stalls near the school for something to eat. The food stalls lining the street emitted enticing aromas. As we strolled along the street, our attention was drawn to a barbecue restaurant bustling with activity. We found a quiet corner to sit down while a friendly waiter handed us menus. We ordered a fragrant barbecue platter and a refreshing salad.
Before long, our food arrived at the table; the barbecue sizzled enticingly while releasing an irresistible aroma; fresh vegetables in the salad made it mouthwatering. I eagerly picked up my chopsticks and dug in heartily. In that wonderful moment, I forgot all my worries and wholeheartedly enjoyed this delicious meal.
Zhang Yun sat across from me; she ate while glancing down at her phone, her fingers quickly tapping away on the keyboard as her eyes flickered between the screen and me to see if I noticed her actions.
"Third Master, I just tested the waters. Xingxing doesn't seem to want to mention you. She's packing her bags today and will be moving back to her home in B City tomorrow, so she won't be staying on campus anymore. I can only help you up to this point."
"Mm."
