When Fang Xiaoran arrived at the 4S shop, I happened to be there handling some business.
She needed to pick up her car, but I insisted on driving her there.
She couldn't refuse me and reluctantly got into the car.
"Uncle," she suddenly spoke up.
My hand on the steering wheel stiffened, and I irritably tugged at my tie, glancing at her. "Why are you shouting?"
She replied slowly, "I'm afraid that Uncle is getting older and might forget things, so I'm just reminding you."
I gritted my teeth. "Fang Xiaoran, you're doing this on purpose."
She shrugged, noncommittal.
The ride was silent.
While waiting at a traffic light, I couldn't help but glance at her. "You..."
"Buzz—"
The sound of my phone vibrating interrupted me.
I frowned and answered the call.
I didn't know what was said on the other end, but my expression grew serious. I nodded and hung up the phone before turning to look at her.
She was looking down at her phone, her fair and delicate face illuminated by the screen, with her long lashes casting shadows on her cheeks, giving her a somewhat lonely appearance.
I pressed my lips together. "Did you know that W City is experiencing flooding?"
Her expression stiffened, and she suddenly looked up at me, her eyes filled with panic.
I spoke honestly, "Your husband is trapped in the mountains. The specific situation is unclear, but local authorities are working hard to rescue him."
She lowered her gaze and remained silent for a long time.
Just when I thought she wouldn't respond, she spoke up, her voice slightly hoarse, "Gao Yong, can you help me?"
I didn't answer but started the car instead.
During the wait at the traffic light, I made a phone call. "Hello, Lao Li, can you do me a favor..."
After dropping her off at home, I left.
That night, I received her call. "Gao Yong, the flights to W City have been canceled. Can you take me there by helicopter?"
I asked, "Where are you?"
"Downstairs."
I walked to the window and looked down; sure enough, I saw her standing below, hugging her arms and stamping her feet in place.
Just like before.
I put on my coat and went downstairs.
When she saw me, her eyes clearly brightened a bit.
I didn't waste any words and took her directly to W City.
By the time we arrived, it was already early morning.
I contacted the relevant personnel and sent Li Bin's location to them.
The other party shook their head, "This area has experienced a landslide, and it's inaccessible. Don't worry too much; we've already dispatched someone to keep an eye on it. We'll go in as soon as the situation improves a bit."
Fang Xiaoran didn't hear the rest of the conversation clearly; her mind was filled with those four words.
Landslide.
She swayed slightly, almost falling, but fortunately, I caught her in time.
She grabbed my arm as if it were a lifeline. "Gao Yong, Li Bin won't die, right?"
I frowned slightly. "No."
She nodded as if trying to reassure herself. "Right, right. He promised me he would be with me for a lifetime; he never lies to me..."
By the end, she was already sobbing uncontrollably.
I pulled out a tissue and handed it to her. She took it and wiped her tears, but they kept flowing like a broken faucet.
I pressed my lips together. "He won't die."
Until dawn, the situation hadn't improved.
Fang Xiaoran cried until she was exhausted, sitting dazedly in the chair, her eyes swollen like walnuts, looking utterly disheveled.
I went out to buy breakfast and returned, placing it in front of her. "Eat something."
She seemed not to hear me at all, remaining motionless.
I sighed. "Fang Xiaoran, if he dies just like this, what meaning do your actions have? It would be better to take care of yourself and wait for him to come back."
She looked up at me in a daze.
I gently patted her shoulder, "He won't die."
She slowly lowered her head and picked up a bun to stuff into her mouth.
As noon approached, someone ran over and shouted, "You can go in now."
Fang Xiaoran suddenly stood up, and because she got up too quickly, her vision went dark for a moment.
I supported her.
After a few seconds, she pushed me away and was about to leave.
I grabbed her, "I'll accompany you."
She glanced at me but didn't say anything.
On the way, she asked me, "Gao Yong, why are you so nice to me?"
I replied casually, "After all, he's my nephew."
She let out a small laugh, "Is that all?"
I nodded.
She turned her head to look elsewhere and didn't speak again.
After the local comrades took us to the designated location, they left, and the rest was up to us.
The mountain was covered with rubble and mud, making it very difficult to walk.
I let her follow behind me.
She was very quiet and didn't complain once about being tired.
After walking for a while, I stopped and turned to look at her.
Her forehead was covered in sweat, with a few strands of hair sticking to it, and her clothes were splattered with mud, making her look quite disheveled.
I frowned slightly and asked, "Can you keep going?"
She nodded, "I can."
I pressed my lips together and said, "Hold on to me."
She hesitated for a few seconds before grabbing the hem of my shirt.
I moved to the left, and she followed me as I said, "Watch your step."
She responded with an "Oh," but didn't do as I instructed.
I glanced back at her and found that she had her eyes closed.
I: "…"
After walking with her for about twenty minutes, she suddenly spoke up, "Gao Yong, do you hear any sounds?"
I stopped and listened carefully; indeed, I heard a series of knocking sounds.
Following the sound, I looked under a large rock and saw Li Bin trapped beneath it.
He was still alive.
The rescue team quickly cleared the surrounding rubble, and Li Bin was rescued.
Aside from his legs being injured and temporarily losing sensation, he was otherwise fine.
Fang Xiaoran let out a sigh of relief, collapsing onto the ground, finally showing a hint of a smile on her face.
I gently patted her shoulder, "Let's go."
The rescue team carried Li Bin down the mountain.
I lifted my foot and joined another team member in carrying him.
As we reached a low area, one of the team members in front suddenly slipped and fell to the ground.
Both I and another team member let go at the same time, causing Li Bin to fall to the ground, covered in mud and water.
Fang Xiaoran stared for a moment, then looked at me sharply, her gaze fierce.
I explained, "I didn't do it on purpose."
She pressed her lips together and remained silent.
I lowered my gaze to her, "Fang Xiaoran, you don't believe me?"
She took a deep breath, "It's not that."
With that, she turned and walked away.
