I thought that was the end.
However, fate dealt me another heavy blow.
The next morning, I received a call from an unfamiliar number.
"Is this Ye Chen's wife?" A strange woman's voice came from the other end.
"Yes, it is," I replied mechanically. "What is it?"
"Doctor Ye has been in a car accident and is now in the intensive care unit. He has been calling your name."
I felt the world spinning around me.
Ye Chen had been in a car accident?
What about the divorce agreement?
What about the lawyer?
Everything was in chaos.
I hurriedly gathered my things, picked up the child, and rushed to the hospital.
As I pushed open the door to the intensive care unit, I saw Ye Chen lying on the hospital bed.
He was covered in injuries, his face pale, but at the moment he saw me, his eyes lit up.
"Gu Nian..." he said weakly, "you've come..."
I rushed to the bedside, tears streaming down my face. "Ye Chen, what on earth is going on? The divorce agreement..."
Ye Chen struggled to shake his head. "What divorce agreement? I only came to perform surgery on Fang Yuan... then I got into an accident..."
I was stunned.
So, the divorce agreement was fake?
Who was that lawyer?
Just then, the door to the hospital room was pushed open.
Fang Yuan stood at the doorway, her face pale. "I'm sorry, Gu Nian. I took matters into my own hands... I thought... I thought this way you would both gain your freedom..."
I looked at her and suddenly understood everything.
It turned out that this was all a setup.
Fang Yuan's illness, the divorce agreement, all were orchestrated by her.
I didn't know whether to be angry or to feel heartbroken.
Ye Chen held my hand. "Gu Nian, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have hidden this from you... I just wanted to resolve the issue quickly and return to your side..."
I looked into his sincere eyes, and all my resentment vanished.
"Fool," I choked out, "we're a couple; we should face this together."
Fang Yuan silently stepped out, leaving the three of us.
Looking at the child sleeping in my arms and then at Ye Chen, who was weak but had a determined gaze on the hospital bed, I suddenly felt that perhaps this was the trial we needed to go through.
To make our love stronger and more mature.
"Ye Chen," I said softly, "let's start over, okay?"
He nodded, tears welling in his eyes: "Okay, let's start over. This time, I will never let go of your hand."
Outside the window, the sun was shining perfectly.
A new day, a new beginning.
Our love had finally welcomed a long-awaited sunny day.
Five years later:
"Dad, how do you like my drawing?" The little one held up the paper, his eyes sparkling.
Ye Chen squatted down and carefully examined his son's "masterpiece": "It's amazing! Our little artist has improved!"
I walked over with some fruit and couldn't help but laugh: "Doctor Ye, are you sure you understand what the drawing is about?"
Ye Chen replied seriously: "Of course, this is... uh..."
Seeing his embarrassed expression, my son and I both laughed.
Ye Chen helplessly shook his head and picked up our son: "Alright, Dad surrenders. Why don't you tell Dad what this drawing is about?"
"This is our whole family going on a picnic!" the little guy exclaimed, "Dad, Mom, me, and my sister!"
I was taken aback: "Sister?"
Ye Chen also looked surprised: "Son, what are you talking about? Where did a sister come from?"
The little guy blinked: "Last night, I heard Mom tell Dad, 'Ye Chen, I think I might be having another one.' So, I'm going to have a sister, right?"
That night, after putting our excited son to sleep, Ye Chen and I sat on the balcony, enjoying the rare time alone together.
"Do you remember five years ago?" Ye Chen suddenly said. "If it weren't for that car accident, we might have really missed out."
I held his hand: "Don't say that; it's all in the past."
Ye Chen shook his head: "No, I want to say it. Nian Nian, thank you for not giving up on me back then. Thank you for giving me a chance to start over."
I leaned against his shoulder and softly said: "Silly, we are husband and wife. Sharing hardships is not just talk."
Ye Chen gently caressed my belly: "This little life will be a testament to our love."
I smiled: "I hope it's a girl; then we can call her 'Little Lucky.'"
"Whether it's a boy or a girl, they will be our little lucky one," Ye Chen said tenderly.
We exchanged smiles, our eyes filled with anticipation for the future.
Early the next morning, we couldn't wait to go to the hospital.
"Congratulations, you are really pregnant, already six weeks along," the doctor said with a smile.
Upon hearing this news, Ye Chen was so excited that he nearly jumped up. He hugged me tightly, tears welling in his eyes: "Gu Nian, thank you."
As we walked out of the hospital, the sun was just right. Ye Chen held my hand, while his other hand held our son’s.
"Dad, when can I see my little sister?" our son asked, looking up at him with his small face.
Ye Chen squatted down and patted his head: "You have to wait a few more months. Before that, you need to be a responsible big brother and take good care of your mom, okay?"
Our son nodded seriously: "I will!"
Watching this scene before me, I suddenly felt a rush of emotions.
The past struggles, misunderstandings, and heartaches have all become history. And the warmth and happiness of this moment are what we have always been seeking as our homecoming.
The warmth of human life soothes the hearts of ordinary people. A simple life and ordinary happiness are the best manifestations of love.
Ye Chen, thank you for making me believe that love will ultimately warm the passage of time.
