"Aunt... how is it now?" "It's just like that. You should go home and rest. I'll come to pick you up in the afternoon." Back at home, I lay on the sofa in a daze, my phone buzzing with incoming messages. I opened them one by one to reply—some were work-related, some from my roommate, and there was also one from Zhang Yun.
Zhang Yun said, "Xingxing, how is your dad?"
"The doctor said he's out of danger and everything is improving."
"When are you coming back?"
"I'll wait until he is discharged. Otherwise, I won't feel at ease leaving him alone in the hospital."
"Okay, when you come back, let's go look at wedding dresses together."
"Wedding dresses? Are you getting married to Cheng Haifeng?"
"Yes, our parents have already picked a date."
"Wow, you're the first among us to step into marriage."
After chatting with Zhang Yun for a while, we hung up. I lay there for a bit and dozed off.
For the past few days, I took turns with Shen Yulin, my aunt, and Uncle to look after my father, who was basically recovering well. When we heard the doctor say he could be discharged, all four of us breathed a sigh of relief.
The next day we handled the discharge paperwork, and Uncle drove us home. Not long after arriving home, Shen Yulin received a call and brought a woman in from outside. We looked at each other in confusion as Shen Yulin introduced her: "Uncle, this is Aunt Zhao, my Aunt Zhao's sister. You can trust her character. I've arranged for Aunt Zhao to come over every day to cook and clean for you." I looked at Shen Yulin gratefully and said, "How did you know I wanted to find someone to help my father?"
"You are in B City now; only Uncle is here in City Z. Since Uncle is just out of the hospital, I figured you wouldn't feel comfortable going back to B City right now. But if you don't return to work there, you won't have anything to report back on. So I took the liberty of arranging this."
I stepped forward and took Aunt Zhao's hand. "Aunt Zhao, thank you for your help." Aunt Zhao smiled and said, "It's no trouble at all; it's what I'm here for." Shen Yulin chatted with my father for a few more minutes before leaving with my aunt and others.
Only my father, Aunt Zhao, and I remained at home. Aunt Zhao had a good personality and was very friendly; she went straight into the kitchen to take a look. With a basket in hand, she was about to head out when she said, "There's not much left in the fridge; I'll go buy some groceries right away. Brother Yue has already told me what you like to eat. Just let me know what you want in the future, and I'll get it." Seeing Aunt Zhao like this, my father didn't hold back: "Thank you so much."
"No need to be so polite; I'll head out now so you two can chat more," Aunt Zhao said before turning around and closing the door behind her.
My father looked at me with a hint of emotion in his eyes and said earnestly, "Yulin is thoughtful; now that you're both in B City, I can rest easy." I nodded, feeling grateful.
That evening, I sent Shen Yulin a message: "Thank you, Brother Yulin." He quickly replied: "Remember to reward me, Xinbao." Looking at the screen made me smile involuntarily.
After spending several days with my father at home, Shen Yulin and I began preparing to return to B City. The night before our departure, my father quietly helped us pack our luggage, neatly folding clothes into the suitcase while Aunt Zhao busied herself in the kitchen preparing food for our journey.
On the day of departure, my father and aunt came to the airport to see us off. My father wore his slightly worn jacket with his hands clasped behind his back; his eyes revealed a hint of reluctance as he mustered up his spirits to say to us: "Have a safe trip! Call home if anything happens." My aunt stepped forward and held my hand tightly as she advised me: "Take good care of yourself over there; don’t make us worry."
With our luggage in hand, Shen Yulin and I walked into the terminal while occasionally glancing back at my father and aunt standing at a distance. They watched us until we passed through security before turning away. At that moment, I felt overwhelmed with emotion and longing.
Once the plane took off, I leaned on Shen Yulin's shoulder as tears streamed down my face uncontrollably. He gently patted my hand and comforted me: "Don't cry; we'll see each other again soon." I nodded while trying hard to control my emotions.
