Upon waking up again, I slowly opened my eyes. When I moved my hand, a sharp pain shot through me; I realized I was hooked up to an IV. Looking around, I found myself in a hospital room. "Xiao Fan, you're awake?" My father's voice came from the window, and he quickly walked to my bedside. Just as I was about to speak, I felt a burning sensation in my throat. My father helped me sit up and handed me a glass of water. "Drink this to soothe your throat."
"Dad, what happened to me?"
He sighed. "You fainted at the police station. The officers called me, and by the time I got here, you were already in the hospital."
I remained silent, feeling extremely thirsty. I asked for another glass of water and gulped it down.
"The police told me everything yesterday. Yulin is outside; do you want to see him?"
I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me as I recalled what I had learned at the police station. "You know everything?"
He looked at me with a heavy heart. "If it weren't for this situation, he wouldn't have chosen to leave you back then."
"Dad, you knew all along?" I stared at him in disbelief as he nodded helplessly. "Your uncle said not to tell you about this; he was worried you couldn't handle it. At that time, you were already feeling hopeless, and he thought that knowing the truth would make things worse."
"Please let him in; I want to hear his explanation." My father placed a pillow behind my back and left the room.
Shen Yulin entered, his cold face showing signs of exhaustion. He hesitated at the door, not stepping closer. I looked at him expressionlessly; our eyes met, and we both saw deep affection reflected in each other's gaze, but there was also a complexity of emotions. I gave a self-deprecating smile. "Fate really knows how to play tricks on us."
"I knew that one day you would find out. When I learned about this back then, I was just as lost. On one side was family, on the other was love; it suffocated me," Shen Yulin said as he walked to the window and gazed into the distance.
I pressed my thumb against my palm tightly, gritting my teeth to keep my voice calm. "So you all kept this from me."
Shen Yulin turned his gaze from the distance back to me. "At that time, your mental state wasn't good; we were all afraid you couldn't handle the truth."
"So you chose to avoid it."
"I didn't avoid it." A flicker of pain crossed Shen Yulin's eyes. "I just didn't know how to face it."
I took a deep breath, trying hard to calm myself down. "Did you ever think about what we would do when I found out the truth?"
Shen Yulin silently looked at me without answering. As I stared into his eyes, a sharp pain pierced my heart.
"I never thought about it. I never intended for you to leave." He spoke softly. "The reason I'm back is that I can't let go of you and also want to repay my mother’s debt." A slight tremor ran through me as I quietly closed my eyes. "Just go; I need some time alone."
Shen Yulin seemed like he wanted to say something more but seeing my unwillingness to talk, he stepped out.
Hearing the door close behind him, I opened my eyes and gazed longingly at the doorway until my father opened it again, pulling my attention away. "Eat something; I've brought some porridge. The doctor said there's nothing serious; we can go home this afternoon."
"Dad, I want to stay here."
"Alright."
After completing the discharge procedures in the afternoon, my father and I left the hospital. My aunt drove us home but did not leave immediately; she accompanied me upstairs instead. Sitting on our balcony with the wind blowing gently, my mood gradually calmed down. My aunt approached and gently said, "Actually, Yulin is really quite a good kid. Despite how his mother treated you back then, he still chose you firmly; that shows he truly cares for you."
How could I not understand his feelings? But everything came so suddenly; if I had not known the truth, perhaps we could have been happy together all these years? But now that so much time has passed, does he truly love me? Or does he just feel indebted to me?
