On the day I was brought back home, my mom and brother were waiting for me at the door.
The girl who was mistakenly taken in, the Fake Daughter, stood on Center Stage, dressed to the nines.
She wore a white cashmere long coat from Haute Couture, brown calfskin knee-high boots, and underneath was a black wool sweater. A pair of seawater pearl earrings sparkled brilliantly in the sunlight.
From a distance, her well-maintained skin glowed with a rosy hue, truly resembling a flower of wealth and nobility.
In contrast, my outfit today merely looked clean and tidy.
Without any jewelry to embellish my appearance, I should still be considered a decent girl.
However, standing in front of the Fake Daughter made me feel like a hardworking laborer under the scorching sun.
On the way here, I had already inquired about her; the Fake Daughter, Lin Xue, is very favored.
She consistently ranks first in her class and excels in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting.
The Lin family arranged her engagement three years ago to Lu Zhiyuan, the son of the chairman of Xingyuan Group.
This summer, they are set to marry just a month after Lin Xue's master's graduation.
My mom tightly held my hand; my appearance reflected her youthful looks since I am indeed the child she gave birth to.
"Lin Jia, welcome home! This is your brother, Lin Chen, and this is your sister, Lin Xue. You are all my children!"
Lin Xue tugged at the corner of her mouth, her smile innocent yet carrying the weight of life's hardships.
She appeared to be a particularly complex person.
I returned a polite smile.
My brother, Lin Chen, seemed indifferent towards me, showing little interest.
My mother's gaze finally landed on a middle-aged man, and she smiled as she introduced him, "Lin Jia, this is your father, Lin Xingzhi. We are all family now and will never be apart again!"
My stepfather, Lin Xingzhi, is a well-known philanthropist in Haishi, with a significant company valuation. Both of his children have master's degrees and studied abroad. His son currently runs his own company, which has gained some scale, while his daughter signed a contract with a foreign enterprise right after graduating this year.
With such a family background, it was a circle far beyond my reach as a high school dropout struggling in life.
But I am indeed the biological daughter of this family.
I frowned slightly but stood firmly beside the Fake Daughter, posing for a group photo with my Cheap Parent and brother at the front door.
The Fake Daughter is a skilled manipulator; she looked at the photo of me and winked at my indifferent brother with a smile. He glanced at her dismissively and did not take the photo.
There was no comparison between us at all.
Looking at the photo of myself, I couldn't help but frown, but I managed to suppress my embarrassment and put the picture away. After more than twenty years apart, I was still a stranger.
However, my skills in Top-Notch Green Tea are quite impressive.
I paused for a moment, as if discussing something unrelated, and said nonchalantly, "I was sent to an orphanage by my adoptive parents when I was three; that was the first time I felt what a home was!"
After all, I was a piece of flesh that fell from my mother. Holding back tears, she grasped my hand and said, "Jiajia, it's just good to have you back! Mom and Dad bought you a lot of new clothes! You will live at home from now on! Lin Xue is your sister; she will take good care of you!"
My dad nodded and handed me a Black Gold Card. "If you want to buy anything, just use this card! Jiajia, if you need anything, just tell Dad!"
The white lotus Lin Xue raised an eyebrow and looked me in the eye. She exchanged glances with her brother Lin Chen, then her expression darkened. "Mom and Dad, Lin Jia has just returned and needs to adjust to the family. I don't have classes for the next few days, so I'll stay home to keep everyone company!"
My parents nodded happily. I knew that Lin Xue wanted to stay home to create a comparison between us so that my parents wouldn't grow fond of me.
But how could I, the True Daughter, give up?
"Dad, Mom, I've been working overtime lately, so it would be inconvenient for me to stay at home. I'll continue living outside for now!"
Lin Xue scoffed quietly but not overtly. Lin Chen turned his face away disinterestedly. My mom wanted to say something more but held back. My dad received a phone call and walked into the villa.
I lowered my head and looked at my phone for a while. After Cheap Dad finished his call, he politely exchanged a few words with me about how renting outside was tough and that it was better to stay at home—typical pleasantries—before the family went inside.
The Lin family had prepared a feast to welcome me back home.
Dad, Lin Xingzhi, usually works overtime at the company and doesn't come home for dinner. Recently, Lin Chen has been so busy with the launch of new products that he hardly has time to eat. If it weren't for Mother Lin ’s insistence, neither of them would be home at this time.
Moreover, Lin Xue is about to graduate with her master's degree and has been preparing her thesis, hardly eating dinner at all.
She was also called back by Mother Lin.
Seeing the family's feigned smiles, I smiled back, but it was Lin Xue who spoke first, "How many years has Sister Lin Jia been studying? How has it been these years?"
Lin Xue's question was merely an attempt to dig into my background, serving as material for her to mock me.
I wouldn't let her take advantage of me. "What chance does a child from an orphanage have to study?"
Upon hearing this, Lin Xingzhi frowned slightly; he had already inquired and knew that I hadn't even attended college.
He served me some dishes and awkwardly said, "You've suffered!"
My mother was momentarily stunned; she couldn't believe how dire my adoptive parents' situation was when they sent me to the orphanage when I was young.
She glanced at Lin Xue sitting across from me and then looked at me, holding back tears that threatened to fall.
It was unexpected that blood relatives could end up in such circumstances.
"Did you not even graduate from high school?" Lin Xue's words snapped my parents' nerves; her intention was to make me feel even more embarrassed.
My mother lowered her head upon hearing this, unable to eat a single bite, while my father sat deep in thought with a serious expression, smoking a cigarette.
Lin Xue's seemingly casual remark, combined with her innocent expression, made it clear to me that no matter how well she disguised herself as a pure white lotus, I could see through it.
I smiled faintly, lowering my head in silence. Back when I was in high school, I ranked first in English in my grade, but none of the children from the orphanage ever graduated from high school.
I was no exception; I dropped out early.
Lin Chen cast me a cold glance and turned away in disdain.
My mother stepped in to mediate, "Jiajia, if you want to study abroad..." She couldn't finish her sentence. A child who hadn't even graduated from high school studying abroad would only be a laughingstock!
My father placed the Black Card beside me, but I didn't take it right away.
He said, "It's better to live simply! If you need anything in the future, you can always come to your parents!"
I looked thoughtfully at my two elderly parents and made a decision. "Thank you very much for letting me come home today. But I now have my own career and family, so I won't be accepting new clothes or the Black Card. I will come back to visit more often!"
Seeing me say this, my mother couldn't help but start to cry. My father, Lin Xingzhi, frowned but didn't stop her. Lin Xue snorted coldly and continued to criticize me.
