During the winter break, Jiang Yuan stayed in Beicheng to intern as a financial analyst. On New Year's Eve, she made her way back to Yuncheng to celebrate the holiday with Grandma Chu and her mother. Chu Yunhui's villa was completed in New Forest Town, adorned with white tiles that gleamed under the winter sun, making it look particularly luxurious. The town had never seen such an impressive house, and in no time, the villa became a landmark of New Forest Town.
At the New Year's dinner, Chu Hong rambled on, repeatedly recounting the glory of Chu Yunhui's return to their hometown. "Our Yunhui is quite capable," Chu Hong said as she placed a piece of rib into Wang Li's bowl. "Unlike some people who have studied for so many years but are still not as accomplished as someone who barely attended school."
Jiang Yuan listened without responding. Noticing Jiang Yuan's silence, Chu Hong became even more irritated. "Yunhui mentioned that her house cost nearly a million just for the renovations," Chu Hong scoffed. "Some people will never earn that much money in their lifetime."
Jiang Yuan looked up at Chu Hong and replied calmly, "That house has cameras everywhere and security patrolling twenty-four hours a day. I wonder if it's to guard against thieves or to keep an eye on their own people."
"You—" Chu Hong was taken aback, her expression changing instantly.
"Uncle Chu," Jiang Yuan said as she set down her chopsticks, "if you have nothing else to discuss, I’ll go watch TV with Grandma Chu." With that, Jiang Yuan stood up and left.
Chu Hong sat in her chair, her face turning pale with anger. Wang Li, sitting beside her, didn’t dare to say a word.
Jiang Yuan helped Grandma Chu to the living room and kept her company while they watched the Spring Festival Gala. Grandma Chu was getting older and couldn’t stay up late; by eleven o'clock, she was too sleepy to keep her eyes open.
After sending Grandma Chu back to her room and settling her in, Jiang Yuan returned to her attic. This was the attic where she and Chu Yunhui had lived as children. Jiang Yuan sat on the edge of her bed, taking in everything around her.
Her room was connected to Chu Yunhui's; it had originally been one room before being separated by wooden boards. Jiang Yuan remembered how, when they were younger, Chu Yunhui would sneak into her room at midnight to sleep beside her.
"Sister," the girl asked softly while hugging a stuffed doll and snuggling under the covers, "do you think Wang Ming will like me?"
Jiang Yuan reached out and gently ruffled her sister's hair. "He will."
"Really?" Chu Yunhui's eyes sparkled.
"Really."
"Sister," Chu Yunhui said, hugging her doll, "I want to marry Wang Ming in the future."
"Mm." Jiang Yuan smiled but didn't say anything.
When Chu Yunhui was in elementary school, Jiang Yuan was in middle school.
Chu Yunhui admired Wang Ming greatly and would pull Jiang Yuan along to find him after school, hoping that Wang Ming would compliment her a little.
Wang Ming was very gentle and patient with Chu Yunhui, but for some reason, he was unusually cold towards Jiang Yuan.
Chu Yunhui always thought that Wang Ming liked Jiang Yuan, so she would cling to Jiang Yuan and ask her to deliver things to Wang Ming.
Although Jiang Yuan agreed, she was never very enthusiastic about it.
"Sister," Chu Yunhui tugged at Jiang Yuan's arm and said sweetly, "Can you help me deliver this to Wang Ming?"
Jiang Yuan looked at the envelope Chu Yunhui handed over, hesitated for a moment, and then took it.
"Thank you, sister!" Chu Yunhui happily hugged Jiang Yuan. "I knew you were the best."
Jiang Yuan smiled but didn't say anything.
After that time, Chu Yunhui asked Jiang Yuan to deliver things a few more times.
Jiang Yuan always verbally agreed but never actually delivered them.
Until before Chu Yunhui went to Haicheng for work, she came to find Jiang Yuan.
"Sister," Chu Yunhui looked at Jiang Yuan with pleading eyes, "Can you lend this envelope to Wang Ming?"
Jiang Yuan looked at Chu Yunhui and remained silent for a while before finally agreeing.
"Thank you, sister," Chu Yunhui hugged Jiang Yuan. "Thank you."
Seeing Chu Yunhui's happy expression made Jiang Yuan feel a bit sad inside.
She knew that Wang Ming wouldn't like Chu Yunhui.
The person Wang Ming liked was her.
After Chu Yunhui went to Haicheng, Jiang Yuan secretly checked the envelope.
Inside the envelope were the exam papers that Chu Yunhui had copied by hand, each question written neatly.
Before going to Haicheng, Chu Yunhui had copied all of Wang Ming's exam papers once.
As Jiang Yuan looked at those papers, her heart was filled with mixed emotions.
She didn't understand why Chu Yunhui did that; she just felt that Chu Yunhui was really foolish. Jiang Yuan remembered that the year Chu Yunhui went to Haicheng, she had just started her second year of high school. During the Spring Festival the year after Chu Yunhui left, Jiang Yuan had gone to find Wang Ming.
It was New Year's Eve. Jiang Yuan first went to Grandma Chu's house for the reunion dinner, then made an excuse to go back to school to get something and left Grandma Chu's house. Jiang Yuan did not return to school but instead went to Wang Ming's house.
When she arrived at Wang Ming's door, she found it unlocked. Jiang Yuan hesitated for a moment, then pushed the door open and walked in. The house was very quiet. She walked into the living room and saw Wang Ming's coat on the sofa.
"Wang Ming?" Jiang Yuan called out, but no one answered. She called again, but still no response. After a moment of hesitation, she walked to the bedroom door.
"Wang Ming?" Jiang Yuan knocked on the door, "Are you there?" A rustling sound came from inside the room, as if something had fallen. Jiang Yuan frowned; could there be a thief? She turned around to look for something to defend herself when suddenly she heard Wang Ming's voice from inside the room.
"Don't come in!" Wang Ming's voice was tense.
Jiang Yuan was taken aback for a moment but quickly reacted. "Wang Ming," she said, gripping the doorknob, "What's wrong?"
"Don't come in!" Wang Ming's voice was urgent.
Jiang Yuan hesitated for a moment before pushing the door open. The room was somewhat dark; heavy curtains were drawn, and the light was dim. Jiang Yuan saw Wang Ming lying on the bed, his forehead covered in sweat.
"Wang Ming," Jiang Yuan hurried over, "What happened?" Wang Ming looked at Jiang Yuan, his lips pale and unable to speak.
