"Designer Yan, off work?" 0
"Today I received two big orders again, not bad!" 0
"You're so impressive at such a young age. No wonder even our Amy wants to recruit you as a son-in-law; she has good taste!" 0
Yan Jien had just walked into the residential area downstairs from the renovation company when a few aunties chatting at the entrance greeted him. 0
Yan Jien smiled and exchanged a few pleasantries with them before climbing up to the fifth floor. 0
At thirty years old, Yan Jien is an interior designer at a renovation company in Nanquan City, F Province. His job is quite respectable, but it is also very demanding. 0
To find an affordable place to rent, he lives in Mukeng Village in the Xiufeng District of Nanquan City. 0
His landlord, Amy, is warm-hearted and treats Yan Jien well, so he has been renting from her for three years. 0
"Amy, still here?" Yan Jien reached the fifth floor and saw Amy chatting with a woman. 0
"Xiao Yan, working overtime again today?" 0
"Come here, let me introduce you. This is my relative from my hometown; she bought a house in Mukeng Village and is looking for a designer." 0
"Lan Chun, Xiao Yan is our company's best designer; you can't go wrong hiring him!" Amy pulled Yan Jien over. 0
"Designer Yan is so young?" Lan Chun was somewhat surprised. 0
"Youth has its advantages; creativity is great!" Amy interjected. 0
"True!" Lan Chun looked Yan Jien over and suddenly asked, "Designer Yan, are you married?" 0
"Not yet," Yan Jien replied, feeling somewhat puzzled. 0
"Do you have a girlfriend?" Lan Chun asked again. 0
"No," Yan Jien was even more confused now. 0
"Do you have plans to buy a house in Nanquan?" Lan Chun asked with an inquisitive look. 0
"Well... not at the moment," Yan Jien frowned slightly. 0
"Oh," Lan Chun nodded and didn't say anything further. 0
After seeing Lan Chun off, Yan Jien greeted Amy and was about to head upstairs. 0
"Woo Woo Woo!" 0
Amy's Labrador Retriever, Clark, rushed out, placing its front paws on Yan Jien and wagging its tail excitedly. 0
"Hey, Clark, did you miss me?" Yan Jien patted the dog's head. 0
"I didn't bring you any treats today; I'll get some next time," he said apologetically, feeling quite busy lately. 0
"Xiao Yan, you're working overtime every day; you must be tired. Make sure to take care of yourself," Amy said as she watched Yan Jien's back. 0

"Got it, Amy." Yan Jien waved his hand, opened the door, and walked inside. 0

After closing the door, Yan Jien leaned against it, taking a few deep breaths. He then walked to the mirror, unbuttoned his shirt, and stared at his back. 0

In the past half month, Yan Jien had been sleeping poorly, often waking up in a cold sweat, feeling anxious and short of breath, and lacking appetite. His mental state was also very poor; he frequently felt inexplicably irritable and had an impulse to throw things. 0

On top of that, with no appetite, constant fatigue, and frequent phlegm production, Yan Jien suspected he might be ill. At the end of last month, he went to the hospital for a full check-up—blood tests, CT scans, MRIs, pathological slices... he had done everything possible. Now, he was just waiting for tomorrow's test results. 0

Looking at himself in the mirror, a hint of bitterness appeared at the corner of Yan Jien's mouth. He was only thirty years old this year; how had he aged so quickly? 0

Yes, he had aged. After graduating from university, Yan Jien had always held onto his dreams of making a name for himself in Nanquan City. To pursue this dream, he gave up the opportunity to work in government and chose the more challenging path of interior design. 0

Ten years had passed, and reality had dealt him a harsh blow. Now he was just an ordinary interior designer, struggling to make ends meet every day. He had nothing—no house, no car, no savings. 0

"I'll hang on for a few more years; once I have some money saved up, I'll quit." 0

"Then I'll go back home and find a local girl to settle down with." 0

Yan Jien sighed. This was his biggest wish at the moment. 0

"Gurgle..." 0

Suddenly, his stomach rumbled loudly; Yan Jien felt as if his stomach was in turmoil and was starting to panic from hunger. 0

"Why am I hungry again?" Yan Jien looked bewildered. 0

He had taken on two projects today and worked late into the night; by the time he got home it was already nine o'clock in the evening. 0

He currently lived in Mukeng Village, a notorious area in Nanquan City known for its dirtiness and chaos. However, the rent was cheap and it was close to his company, so Yan Jien had been living there for three years. 0

"Today is really strange," Yan Jien said as he rubbed his stomach and walked to the kitchen to prepare a bowl of instant noodles. 0

Logically speaking, he had eaten two meals today—one for lunch and one for dinner—both substantial meals. Moreover, in the past half month his appetite had increased significantly; he could eat three bowls of rice each meal. So why was he hungry again now? 0

"Could it be that I've been too tired lately and not getting enough nutrition?" Yan Jien thought for a moment, and this was the only reason he could come up with. 0

"Forget it, I'll go to bed early. I need to go to the hospital tomorrow to get my test results." Yan Jien made a bowl of instant noodles and hastily ate it before heading to the bathroom to take a shower. 0

Yan Jien's rental apartment was small, just a one-bedroom with a living room, kitchen, and bathroom, totaling less than 30 square meters, but it was enough for one person. 0

"Ah!" 0

Yan Jien's hand holding the towel suddenly trembled, and he felt a sharp pain surge from deep within his spine. This pain swept over him like a wave, quickly engulfing his entire body—his jaw, finger joints, spine, knees... all felt like they were being pricked by needles. 0

Yan Jien was sweating profusely, collapsing onto the floor, his whole body shaking uncontrollably. 0

"It hurts! It hurts!" Yan Jien gritted his teeth, veins bulging on his forehead. 0

The pain came quickly and left just as fast; after just over a minute, it vanished. 0

"Huff huff huff..." Yan Jien gasped for breath, feeling as if he had just been pulled out of water. 0

"What’s going on?" Yan Jien's face turned pale; that wave of pain was unbearable. 0

"There must be something wrong!" Yan Jien wiped his sweat and leaned against the wall to stand up. 0

"Tomorrow, I must go to the hospital!" Yan Jien vowed silently in his heart. 0

But just half an hour later, the pain returned. 0

This time, it lasted longer—two minutes—and the intensity was far greater than before. 0

"Ah! Ah! Ah!" Yan Jien rolled on the ground in agony, tears and snot streaming down his face. 0

"I'm so hungry! So hungry!" Yan Jien trembled all over as his stomach growled loudly. 0

"Eat something! Eat something!" Yan Jien crawled into the kitchen, grabbing instant noodles, buns, and biscuits to shove into his mouth. 0

But strangely enough, as soon as he swallowed these foods, it felt as if they had disappeared—he had no sensation of having eaten at all. The intense hunger pangs did not diminish in the slightest! 0

"How can this be? How can this be?" Yan Jien panicked completely. 0

At that moment, the pain struck again! 0

"Ah!" Yan Jien screamed in despair as his limbs convulsed and his consciousness began to fade... 0
