"Have you considered marrying Mr. Shen?" Zhang Yun gently poked the sleeping child's face, her eyes glimmering with curiosity as she tentatively asked.
I shifted my gaze from the child to the window, a complex emotion welling up inside me. After a moment of silence, I replied softly, "No." My voice was calm.
Since having the child, my entire focus had shifted to this little one, leaving me with little energy to think about anything else. Although he had indeed been caring during this time, what mattered most to me now was the child's happiness and healthy growth. I wanted to wholeheartedly care for him and provide a stable, warm family environment. As for love and marriage, they seemed distant and vague.
Zhang Yun seemed to understand my thoughts; she sighed softly and didn't press further.
"Now that the child is here, you should think about him too; he needs a complete home!" This statement struck my heart like a heavy hammer, plunging me into deep thought.
After hesitating for a moment, my lips moved slightly, but I ultimately said nothing more. Silence enveloped the room, as if time had frozen in that moment.
Meanwhile, outside the door, Shen Yulin stood quietly at the entrance with a carefully prepared fruit platter in hand. He had intended to bring us some fruit but inadvertently overheard this conversation. Disappointment surged within him like a tidal wave, yet he knew all too well that this was the result of his past mistakes.
He silently turned away and walked heavily toward the kitchen. He realized that he could no longer reclaim what he had lost and could only choose to endure this pain in silence. Once inside the kitchen, he gently closed the door as if trying to shut out the noise and troubles of the outside world.
Standing in the center of the kitchen, Shen Yulin took a deep breath, attempting to calm himself. However, the turmoil within him remained difficult to quell. He gazed out at the scenery outside, his thoughts drifting far away. Reflecting on past events filled him with regret; if only time could be reversed, he would strive to change everything. But now it was too late for such thoughts.
I had no idea that Shen Yulin was standing just outside the door, listening intently to our conversation while I naively believed that his recent moodiness was merely due to work troubles or other trivial matters. I didn't take it to heart and continued living my small life as usual.
After my confinement period ended, our family took the child to the hospital for a comprehensive check-up. When the doctor asked for the child's name, I instinctively looked at Shen Yulin sitting beside me, only to find that he was looking at me at that moment as well. Our eyes met as if we were both waiting for the other to speak first.
After a brief silence, I took a deep breath and quietly told the doctor, "Um... we haven't decided on a name for the baby yet." The doctor looked surprised and questioned us, "It's already been a month; how come you haven't named him yet? You probably haven't processed his birth certificate either? You need to hurry up! There are still a series of checks for your child coming up. It's better for him if you give him a nice name soon and get his birth certificate sorted out!" Feeling somewhat embarrassed, I nodded and promised to handle it promptly.
After leaving the hospital, Shen Yulin went to get the car while I stood alone at the entrance holding the child. My attention was solely on him amidst the bustling crowd around me. At that moment, someone bumped into my shoulder; I took a step forward. "Oh, I'm sorry, miss! Are you okay?" A lady in a floral dress smiled warmly at me and my child.
