After my daughter and I had our fill of food and drink, Shen Yulin led us to the car. Today, the family driver was behind the wheel. So, the three of us settled comfortably into the spacious back seat of the car. The child had already drifted off into a sweet dream, quietly lying in Shen Yulin's broad and warm embrace; I too, like a lazy kitten, leaned softly against him, my consciousness gradually fading as I began to doze off.
“Wife, why don’t you sleep a little longer? I'll wake you when we get to the mountains,” Shen Yulin's gentle and deep voice reached my ears. I responded softly and slowly closed my eyes, quickly sinking back into slumber.
I didn’t know how long we had been driving when I groggily woke up from my dreams. At that moment, Shen Yulin wrapped his arm around me tightly and softly said, “Wife, you’re finally awake? Just hang on a little longer; we’ll be at our destination soon.” I rubbed my sleepy eyes and turned to look out the window. Outside was a hazy scene, with distant green mountains appearing and disappearing like a beautiful ink painting. As the car continued to move forward, the mountains kept shifting behind us, and this serene environment made me exclaim, “Wow, this place is simply beautiful!”
Before long, we finally arrived at our final destination. The first thing that caught my eye was a row of simple yet quaint mountain cabins. These cabins were arranged in an orderly fashion, as if they were part of nature itself. In the center of these cabins stood an elderly couple in front of one of the doors. Their faces radiated kind and warm smiles, as gentle as the spring sun, making one feel incredibly close and at ease.
As we slowly walked into the yard, the grandparents hurried over to greet us. Shen Yulin carefully carried the child out of the car and then helped me down slowly.
“Grandpa and Grandma!” Shen Yulin smiled as he introduced us to the elderly couple. “This is my wife, Fanxing, and this is our daughter, Tang Tang.” His tone was filled with joy and pride.
Hearing this, Grandpa and Grandma smiled even more happily. They approached us closely, examining me and Tang Tang with loving eyes full of delight.
“Fanxing, from now on we are family. If you need any help, just let us know,” Grandpa said warmly.
I nodded with gratitude. “Hello, Grandpa and Grandma!” I greeted them with a smile. The two elders looked at me and nodded approvingly, saying, “Good girl! You’re so beautiful; it’s clear you’re blessed.”
The elderly couple then looked at the child in Shen Yulin's arms; Tang Tang was sound asleep with her little face rosy like an apple. Her small mouth was slightly open, occasionally making soft sounds as if she were dreaming sweetly. The grandparents hesitated to touch her for fear of waking her but their eyes were filled with affection for the child.
Shen Yulin naturally understood their thoughts. He gently placed the child into Grandma's arms and then pretended to shake his hand dramatically while saying, “My hands are numb from holding her all this way; Grandma, can you hold her for me? I still have to take care of my wife.”
After saying that, he looked at me mischievously with raised eyebrows and a hint of pride in his eyes. I chuckled inwardly; this guy really knows how to act but he does it quite well. I winked at him to convey my praise and approval. Grandma held Tang Tang in her arms, smiling broadly. “You little rascal; you’ve learned to boss your grandma around now.” Grandpa laughed beside her and said, “Let your grandma hold her granddaughter while we go to the kitchen to prepare dinner.” With that, Grandpa and Shen Yulin headed toward the kitchen together. I stayed with Grandma in the yard chatting while she shared many amusing stories about Shen Yulin's childhood, giving me more insight into him.
