After school, I packed my bag as usual and prepared to leave the classroom.
Just as I reached the door, Zhang Sen suddenly walked over and blocked my way.
"Why did you suddenly move to the back row?"
Zhang Sen asked, his tone somewhat stiff.
"I was actually sitting in the back row all along," I replied, blinking at him.
He was taken aback and momentarily didn't know how to retort.
I added, "The front row was too noisy; I wanted a quieter place."
"Is that so?" Zhang Sen said noncommittally, staring at me for a moment before stepping aside to let me pass.
"Do as you wish."
Seeing him lose his composure was rare, and I couldn't help but smile, so I reached out and patted his shoulder.
Zhang Sen was tall, and we hadn't interacted much before.
The fluorescent light was dim, but upon closer inspection, he wasn't bad-looking at all.
I bid him farewell and quickly walked out of the classroom without looking back.
That night, when I got home, I lay in bed tossing and turning unable to sleep.
I pulled out my notebook and listed Xue Yang's offenses: smoking, cheating, bullying, fighting, stealing...
Zhang Sen's smile gradually surfaced in my mind, slow yet clear.
It felt like I had grown up in an instant.
Even if it was just an afternoon, he entered my life like a beam of light by accident.
As for Xue Yang, I don't understand why my former self would be attracted to such a scoundrel.
I picked up my phone, stared at Xue Yang's name, and finally pressed the button to delete him as a friend.
In the following days, Zhang Sen and I hardly spoke to each other.
He remained focused on his studies while I continued to sit in the back row, maintaining a facade of distance.
Li Xiaoxiao seemed to sense something and began to intentionally keep her distance from me.
She appeared to treat Zhang Sen with more humility and caution, as if afraid of touching a sensitive nerve.
During lunch break, Li Xiaoxiao once again approached Zhang Sen. She bit her lip, standing there with a hint of grievance, and softly said:
"Zhang Sen, do you have any issues with me?"
Li Xiaoxiao finally couldn't hold back her question, her voice tinged with a slight quiver.
Zhang Sen looked up at her, his expression helpless but still calm. "No."
"Then why are you being so cold to me?" Li Xiaoxiao's voice was filled with helplessness and confusion.
"You weren't like this before."
"With the college entrance exam approaching, we're all classmates; you're overthinking it," Zhang Sen replied before returning to his work.
As expected of a top student; what a powerful response.
Li Xiaoxiao stood there for a few seconds in shock before silently turning around and returning to her seat, lowering her head and no longer speaking.
Anyone could see it.
Zhang Sen had already shut himself off; no one could reach him anymore.
After school that afternoon, I received another message from Xue Yang.
Although there are only a few days left until graduation, he hardly comes to school anymore.
Xue Yang's seat has become a corner for hygiene, as the old teacher calls it, a sign of self-abandonment.
But he hasn't given up on Li Xiaoxiao, so he continues to haunt me by changing his number to harass me.
"Li Xiaoxiao! Don't forget!"
As for the previous offense, he indeed didn't mention it at all.
I rolled my eyes and turned off my phone, ignoring any further messages from him.
Zhang Sen suddenly appeared in front of me, interrupting my intention to turn my phone sideways and play a game.
He was holding a problem-solving notebook, his expression neutral, and his tone as cold as usual.
"You were so studious a few days ago, and now you're playing games again."
Realizing that his tone might have been too harsh, he softened his voice and said, "If you have any questions, you can ask me."
I was taken aback and looked up at him.
