On the day Zhang Sen did not get accepted into Tsinghua, the sun was shining brightly, and there seemed to be a sense of relief in the air. I walked in front of the announcement board where the results were posted, feeling a mix of anxiety and relief. I knew my grades wouldn't amaze anyone, but for me, being able to smoothly enroll in a local university with a major in Journalism Major was already satisfying.
I happily walked towards Zhang Sen, only to find his face heavy with disappointment, a stark contrast to the bright sunshine that day.
“Zhang Sen?” I approached him and asked softly.
He slowly lifted his head, his voice low and sulky like a pouting puppy: “I didn’t get into Tsinghua.”
Seeing him like this made my heart tighten. Zhang Sen had always been the genius of our class; he had been first in nearly every exam since childhood, and everyone thought he would easily get into Tsinghua. No one expected this outcome.
I stood on my tiptoes and gently patted his shoulder: “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.”
When he still looked gloomy, I couldn't help but laugh: “Even if you didn’t get into Tsinghua, it’s not a big deal. I can take care of you!”
Zhang Sen paused for a moment, turned to look at me, his eyes filled with helplessness. He shook his head lightly without saying much. Seeing him like this made me feel a bit regretful, thinking to myself: Oh no, did I say something wrong again?
After a moment of silence, an idea struck me. I smiled and hugged his arm, my voice full of encouragement: “You’re so talented; if you repeat a year, you’ll definitely succeed! Don’t worry, Tsinghua is waiting for you!”
This time, Zhang Sen surprisingly didn’t argue back; he just nodded slightly, clearly weighing this choice. In the end, Zhang Sen decided to repeat the year while I smoothly entered university.
University life felt like a burst of vibrant colors for me. With unrestricted time and ample freedom, I often immersed myself in the library and under the shade of trees on campus, enjoying this hard-won tranquility and freedom. However, even though I was busy with my studies, my heart still worried about Zhang Sen, who was still striving for Tsinghua.
I knew that Zhang Sen’s life was completely different from mine. Every day for him was spent among countless exam papers and review materials, repeating the monotony and pressure of senior year. So, I often took advantage of my free time to sneak back to high school in my uniform to bring him some food and drinks, showing him my care.
"You've come." Zhang Sen looked at the food I handed him, a hint of a helpless smile appearing on his lips. "You're so busy yourself, yet you still come to see me."
"I'm only a freshman; how busy can I be?" I replied with a grin. "It's you, the busy one, who needs to eat well and rest properly!"
A year flew by in the blink of an eye, and Zhang Sen's hard work finally paid off. He not only successfully got into Tsinghua University but also received a recommendation for admission. That day, I was so excited that I drew a big smiley face on his school uniform and then took his hand, running freely around the campus, laughter echoing everywhere.
As time passed and years went by, we each embarked on our own career paths. I became a reporter for a newspaper, responsible for writing news articles, while Zhang Sen became a professor at Tsinghua University.
Whenever work got busy, I would think back to those youthful days, reminiscing about the storms we weathered together, my heart filled with gratitude and contentment. No matter how many hardships we faced, I always believed that as long as we supported each other, the road ahead would surely be bright.
However, fate did not favor everyone. Once the Campus Bully, Xue Yang chose to drop out and drift into society. Without his former glory and power, he had to make a living on the streets, now selling grilled sausages and cold noodles at the school gate. The hardships of life were etched on his face; every day felt like a battle against destiny. He often had to evade city management officers chasing him, like a rabbit hunted by a predator, living in fear and helplessness.
One day, while Zhang Sen and I were walking along a small path beside the school, we happened to see Xue Yang. The setting sun cast its warm glow on him, illuminating his weary and desolate figure. I stopped in my tracks, feeling a mix of emotions.
Zhang Sen tightened his grip on my hand and softly said to me, "Let's go; don't look back."
I nodded, took a deep breath, and turned away. Yes, what was in the past was already gone; Xue Yang's choices determined his fate, while Zhang Sen and I continued to walk further down our own paths.
As the sun set behind us, we walked hand in hand along the quiet path. The trees by the roadside swayed gently in the breeze as if bidding us farewell. I looked at Zhang Sen and felt an inexplicable sense of peace and happiness rise within me. Although the future remained filled with uncertainties, I knew that as long as we relied on each other, nothing could hinder our steps forward.
"Shall we keep walking?" I asked softly.
Zhang Sen smiled at me with warmth and determination in his eyes. He tightened his grip on my hand and replied gently, "Yes, let's keep walking."
On this long journey of life, I believe that love is the most perfect remedy for everything. No matter how bumpy the road ahead may be, as long as there is love in our hearts, we will walk more firmly and with greater ease.
Life may have its ups and downs, and at times we may even fall into darkness and despair, but as long as we have each other’s companionship, the light in our hearts will never be extinguished.
