"That day..." Su Shi'an's voice faltered, his dark eyelashes drooping. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have left in anger."
Meng Liu couldn't accept his apology; after all, while he was talking to her, Ji Haoyang's fingers were still under her. Meng Liu shook her head to comfort Su Shi'an, "No one expected this to happen. It's not your fault."
As soon as she finished speaking, Su Shi'an pulled her into his arms. His strong arms held her tightly, and his voice vibrated through his chest as he spoke, "I promise it won't happen again. No matter what, I won't let go. Will you forgive me?"
It was hard for anyone to refuse such a sincere apology. Meng Liu felt a piece of her heart crumble. She raised her hand to pat Su Shi'an's back twice for reassurance. "Okay, just let me go a little. I'm running out of breath..."
Su Shi'an released her as instructed, his cheeks flushed with excitement, barely visible behind his glasses, but his voice remained serious. "Then you must come to the dance this weekend, okay?"
Meng Liu agreed. She had to attend this school event. Ever since that day, Ning Ning hadn't returned home for some unknown reason; she had suddenly decided to stay at school and didn't even bring any clothes from home.
Ning Ning and Meng Liu attended the same school. Ever since Ning Ning came with her mother to the Meng Family, everything about Ning Ning's life was compared to Meng Liu's. Her mother instilled in her the belief that she must surpass Meng Liu—everything had to be better than Meng Liu.
For a long time, Meng Liu had almost become the entirety of Ning Ning's life. The time Ning Ning spent watching Meng Liu even exceeded the time she spent on herself. She seemed trapped in an endless nightmare.
The prolonged nightmare and pain made her feel like she was losing herself. She couldn't figure out who she truly was or whom she liked. She had been fixated on Ji Haoyang, but rather than genuinely liking someone with such a bad temper, it seemed she cared more about Ji Haoyang's identity as Meng Liu's fiancé.
This still wasn't the real her. The constant struggle exhausted her; her pursuit of Meng Liu gradually turned into hatred. She couldn't help but think that if Meng Liu disappeared from this world, would she no longer have to be so tired? Could she finally be herself?
So when Qin Shou approached her, she agreed.
The student council organized a dance on Friday night. Initially intended to be a small gathering, news of Su Shi'an's attendance somehow leaked out and attracted a swarm of girls. Unexpectedly receiving sponsorship turned the small dance into a grand event that nearly everyone in the school attended.
Meng Liu arrived with Ning Mu and immediately drew many gazes—handsome boys and beautiful girls; moreover, the rumors about Meng Liu and Su Shi'an had stirred quite a buzz at school, so many recognized her. Ning Mu came as a sponsor and stood by while the reception director watched as Meng Liu and Ning Mu got out of the car without surprise; after all, anyone attending this school was either wealthy or influential.
Ning Mu was escorted to the sponsor's designated area while Meng Liu lagged behind a few steps and headed towards the student section of the dance. With sponsorship in place, everything was organized impressively well; even beautiful volunteers from the etiquette department served drinks gracefully.
As soon as Meng Liu looked up, she spotted Ning Ning standing at the entrance wearing a striking red outfit that contrasted sharply with her usual demeanor. The bold color not only suited her but also highlighted her fair skin; Ning Ning noticed her at the same time.
Finally, it was Meng Liu who walked over first. Ning Ning exchanged a few words with her friends before heading in Meng Liu's direction. "If you have any questions, just ask. If nothing unexpected happens, I won't be going back."
Meng Liu was somewhat surprised by Ning Ning's response. "What? You don't want your brother or mom anymore?"
Ning Ning laughed lightly; she had never spoken so casually with Meng Liu face-to-face before. She nodded with an easy tone, "Yeah, if they cared about me, they would come looking for me."
Meng Liu agreed and felt happy that Ning Ning could think this way. Before she could say anything else, Ning Ning suddenly spoke again, "I heard Qin Shou got his leg broken and was thrown at the Qin family's door. Did he say anything to you?"
"What do you think he would say?" Meng Liu countered without answering directly.
Ning Ning's gaze flickered for a moment before she took a deep breath and looked back at Meng Liu. Waiting quietly for an answer without any hint of blame or hatred gave Ning Ning courage. "Yes, I did reveal your whereabouts to Qin Shou and helped him get someone into the school."
Ning Ning paused as if waiting for something but after a moment of silence with no reaction from Meng Liu—who stood there seemingly unaffected by being a victim—Ning Ning frowned in confusion and asked, "Aren't you angry? I'm harming you."
Meng Liu found herself amused by Ning Ning's reaction; who actively sought out scolding? "I haven't really been harmed by it anyway, and since you brought it up, there must be things we don't know."
"After not seeing you for a few days, you've actually become smarter," Ning Ning continued, the chandelier above her adding a halo of light around her. "I watched you get knocked out and taken away. When I saw them take you out of the school, I regretted it."
Ning Ning looked directly at Meng Liu without flinching. "I don't want to ruin what we have because of my own hatred and jealousy. I think it's not worth it."
"So I wrote a note and had someone deliver it to them." They both knew exactly who "them" referred to, which is why these few people learned about Meng Liu being taken away almost simultaneously. This also allowed Meng Liu to be rescued before the money in her system account ran out. It was a form of redemption, for Meng Liu and for Ning Ning as well.
A beautiful woman in formal attire passed by with a tray of drinks. Meng Liu reached out and took a glass from it, swapping it with the one Ning Ning was holding. "Try this; it's smoother than the one you just had. You should like it."
Ning Ning lowered her head and took a sip. The wine was light, with a stronger floral aroma that she really liked. She looked up at Meng Liu, and they exchanged smiles. She felt that something about Meng Liu had changed, yet at the same time, it seemed like nothing had changed at all. But she didn't care; after all, hadn't she changed too?
