"Professor Wu, that's enough. You can go out and wait for the meal," Rao Jie said, looking at him in confusion.
Wu Rong coughed and looked up to see Rao Jie wearing a white striped apron, her long hair tied back, looking gentle and demure. For a moment, he felt a bit dazed, as if he could hear Ye Ming's nagging voice in his ears.
"Find a virtuous wife who can take care of you, tolerate your temper, and won't argue with you, and everything will be solved."
Wu Rong quickly shook his head. How did he suddenly start thinking about that? Was it because of his age, that his body and mind were instinctively responding to the laws of nature?
Feeling inexplicably baffled, Wu Rong turned to leave. He thought to himself that people are indeed easily influenced by those around them; some ideas can subtly seep in over time.
Rao Jie stood there in confusion, wondering why he had been daydreaming just moments ago and suddenly seemed angry. Did she do something wrong?
Ten minutes later, all the dishes were served. Based on the ingredients Wu Rong brought back, Rao Jie had casually prepared a table full of home-cooked dishes that looked quite appetizing.
Nervously watching Wu Rong as he tasted the food with chopsticks, Rao Jie asked, "How is it? Does it suit your taste?"
Only after trying every dish did Wu Rong raise an eyebrow in surprise and ask, "Did you learn this specifically?"
Rao Jie finally revealed a relieved smile, as if she had scored a perfect mark on an exam and received praise from her parents.
"My grandmother was a chef, and I lived with her for quite a long time, so I learned some cooking. Although I wouldn't dare compare myself to a real chef, my friends say it's quite good," Rao Jie couldn't help but boast a little, hoping for more recognition from Wu Rong.
As Wu Rong watched Rao Jie's smiling face while eating, her round black eyes seemed to sparkle.
Suddenly, he felt that the food was indeed tastier than what he usually had outside. Rao Jie's cooking was not inferior to that of professional chefs. Eating out every day had become tiresome for him; he hadn't had much appetite lately. However, tonight he found himself ravenous and finished two bowls of rice, feeling that even the rice tasted delicious.
The dishes on the table were soon cleared away as well.
Rao Jie noticed that although Wu Rong didn't look overweight, his appetite was surprisingly large. She was a bit surprised but also very pleased; seeing everything she made being eaten was the greatest sense of accomplishment.
"Professor Wu, is it delicious?" Rao Jie asked with bright eyes.
She didn't know what was happening but wanted to hear a compliment from Wu Rong.
Wu Rong looked up at Rao Jie as she poured him tea. Seeing her eager expression for praise suddenly made him feel amused.
His lips involuntarily curled up as they slowly parted. "Hmm, not bad."
Hearing Wu Rong's warm praise was rare for Rao Jie; she suddenly felt an indescribable sense of achievement and her smile became even brighter.
"You like it, right? I can cook for you every meal for the next two days, just as a way to thank you for your help during this time." Wu Rong looked up at Rao Jie in confusion. "What do you have to gain by flattering me?"
Rao Jie was taken aback for a moment but quickly responded, "I'm not trying to flatter you on purpose, really. I'm just very grateful to you and don't want to owe you any favors. It's only two days anyway; once I'm done, I'll leave. I absolutely won't cause you any more trouble."
"Have you decided where you're going?" Wu Rong pressed.
Rao Jie was momentarily stunned.
"Are you boasting about being able to leave without even having a plan?" Wu Rong retorted.
