In the following days, Lin Wan kept thinking about this matter. She was aware of Chen Wu's current situation. Yet, she couldn't deny that she had developed feelings for him.
Back when she had a crush on him, she didn't know his ideals or preferences; she simply liked the boy he was. Now, years later, he was no longer that same boy. He had matured, becoming steady and responsible like an adult. And she still liked him.
After a week of contemplation, she called Chen Wu and agreed to marry him.
A month later, the two families met at a restaurant to discuss the wedding arrangements. Lin Wan's parents and Chen Wu's aunt and uncle spent most of the day deliberating before finally setting a date: the sixth of next month.
Once the discussions were over, everyone returned home. Lin Wan's parents were in high spirits and had consumed quite a bit of alcohol, so Lin Wan planned to drive them back. Chen Wu had also been drinking and couldn't drive.
Lin Wan handed him the car keys and said, "I'll take my parents home first; you can find a designated driver."
Chen Wu nodded, "Okay."
Lin Wan got into the car and rolled down the window, saying, "We'll head out now."
"Be careful on the road," Chen Wu said.
Lin Wan nodded and started the engine. On the way, her mother asked, "Have you found a house yet?"
"Yes," Lin Wan replied. "Chen Wu is renovating it."
"That's good," her mother said. "Once you're married, you'll be adults; don't throw childish tantrums anymore."
Lin Wan acknowledged her mother's words. Her father then asked, "We're going to see the new house next Saturday, right?"
"Um," Lin Wan said, "Chen Wu said he has everything arranged."
Her mother asked again, "What about the wedding photos?"
Lin Wan replied, "At the end of this month."
Her mother nodded, "That's more like it."
When they arrived downstairs, Lin Wan stopped the car, and her parents got out.
She rolled down the window and said, "Mom and Dad, I'm leaving now."
"Go ahead," her mother advised, "Drive carefully."
Lin Wan nodded and started the car.
Lin Wan got out of the car, opened an umbrella, and walked over.
Chen Wu was waiting there, not rushing her.
As she approached, he looked up at her.
In the dim rainy night, his gaze was deep and somewhat inscrutable.
Lin Wan stopped and said, "Let's go."
Chen Wu nodded, "Okay."
Lin Wan didn't know what else to say, so she added, "Then goodbye."
"Wait," Chen Wu suddenly said.
Lin Wan responded with a confused, "?"
She looked at him in puzzlement, waiting for him to continue.
But Chen Wu remained silent for a long time.
Not knowing what he wanted to say, Lin Wan waited for a moment before saying, "Then I'll go first."
As she turned to leave, Chen Wu suddenly spoke up: "You're quite well-known."
Lin Wan replied, "…?"
She turned back in confusion, but Chen Wu waved his hand at her: "Go on, be careful on the road."
Lin Wan frowned, feeling that this person was quite strange.
Just as she was about to speak, her mother's voice came from behind: "Xiao Yuan, let's go."
Lin Wan turned around and responded, "Coming."
She glanced at Chen Wu again, who waved at her. She didn't know what to say, so she turned and walked away.
Once in the car, her mother was still talking about Chen Wu. "He's pretty good, right?"
Lin Wan nodded. "He's okay."
"He's good-looking, has a decent job, and comes from a good family," her mother said. "Boys like that are rare these days."
Lin Wan perfunctorily nodded. "Yes, yes, yes."
"Don't take it lightly," her mother shot her a glare. "Chen Wu is in business; he's met plenty of girls. If he likes you, that's your luck."
Lin Wan sighed. "Mom, I'm only twenty-four."
"So what if you're twenty-four?" Her mother frowned. "When your dad was twenty-five, you were already calling him 'Dad'."
Lin Wan fell silent.
Her mother continued to brainwash her all the way home, talking about Chen Wu's appearance, then his job, and from his job to his family, until they reached the building downstairs.
After getting out of the car, her mother finally stopped talking.
When they arrived at the parking lot, Chen Wu was still waiting.
Lin Wan got out of the car and walked over. "Where are Aunt and Uncle?"
"I sent them off," Chen Wu replied. "I'm waiting for my designated driver."
Lin Wan nodded and said, "Then I'll be on my way."
Chen Wu acknowledged her with a sound.
Lin Wan got into her own car and rolled down the window. "We're going to see the new house next Saturday; don't be late."
"Okay," Chen Wu smiled and nodded. "I'll do as you say."
Lin Wan smiled back, rolled up the window, and started the car.
On the way, she remembered something: Chen Wu said he had known her for a long time.
