I opened another cardboard box, and it was filled with books. As I flipped through them, I suddenly noticed a few pieces of paper tucked inside one of the books. I took them out and found that they were school newsletters. Curiously, I opened one, and a photograph caught my eye.
It was a news photo of a high jump champion, featuring a young boy soaring over the bar. His face radiated confidence with a bright smile. I recognized him as Chen Wu. The text below the photo read: "In our school's track and field meet, senior student Chen Wu won the high jump competition with a height of 2.05 meters, setting a new school record."
Another article reported: "Our exemplary student Lin Wan was captured by the camera while watching the competition, becoming the most beautiful spectator."
I was momentarily stunned. This was our first photo together! I walked over to Chen Wu holding the newspaper.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"Look at this photo," I said, pointing to the high jump picture.
He glanced at it and smiled, saying, "This is from my Freshman Year when I participated in the school sports meet and won the high jump competition."
"I know," I replied, "but did you notice the photo below it?"
He looked down, examined it closely, and then raised his head in surprise: "Is this you?"
"Yeah," I nodded.
"I can’t believe we appeared in the same newspaper together," he said in astonishment.
"Yeah," I nodded again, feeling a strange sensation rise within me.
"This must be when we first met," he remarked.
"Mm-hmm," I nodded.
"Why were you so small back then?" he asked.
"I was only fifteen years old," I replied.
"No wonder, looking at how small you are, I thought you were in middle school," he said.
"I was in Freshman Year at that time," I replied.
"Oh, so you were high jumping," he laughed.
"Not at all!" I retorted.
"Then why are you in the photo?" he asked.
"I... I just happened to walk by and got caught in the shot," I hurriedly explained.
"Is that so?" He looked at me suspiciously.
"Of course!" I said confidently.
"Then why are you blushing?" he asked with a smile.
"I'm not blushing!" I covered my cheeks.
"Look at you, your ears are all red," he laughed.
I walked over to the mirror and indeed, my ears were bright red.
"I... I'm just hot," I quickly explained.
"Hehe, is it because you saw me high jump and felt a little flutter?" he teased.
"I... I didn't!" I hurriedly denied.
"Then why won't you admit it?" he pressed on.
"I..." I was at a loss for words.
"Just admit it, you've liked me for a long time," he said with a smile.
"I... I haven't!" I insisted stubbornly.
"Then why won't you look at me?" he asked.
I lifted my head and looked at him.
His gaze was gentle and affectionate, as if it could melt me away.
I couldn't help but feel a rush of panic inside.
"I... I need to take a break," I said flusteredly.
"Okay, sure, you can take a shower first," he smiled.
I nodded and ran into the bathroom as if escaping.
I closed the door, leaned against it, and took a few deep breaths to calm myself down. I walked to the sink, turned on the faucet, and washed my face with cold water. Looking at my reflection in the mirror, I noticed my cheeks were flushed and my eyes sparkled, as if radiating light. I couldn't help but smile.
It turned out that we had so much fate between us. I never imagined that we would appear in the same newspaper. Perhaps this was destiny's arrangement.
I asked Chen Wu to take a shower first because I wanted to wait until he finished before I washed up.
"Why?" he asked, puzzled.
"Because... because I'm afraid if you wash first, I won't want to anymore," I stammered.
"Why?" he pressed on.
"Because... because you're too dirty," I made up a reason hastily.
"Where am I dirty?" he retorted defiantly.
"You... you smell like sweat all over," I replied.
"Then I'll just wash up later," he said.
"No," I insisted firmly.
"Why?" he asked again.
"Because... because you're too tired and should rest early," I explained.
"I'm not tired," he countered.
"You're not tired, but I am," I said.
"Alright then," he agreed helplessly.
"Then you go take a shower first," I said.
"Okay." He nodded and walked into the bathroom.
As I listened to the sound of water coming from the bathroom, a wave of anxiety washed over me.
