Once, I thought this was my home, my blood relatives, and that one day they would see me. I believed I had long since gotten used to their attitudes and would no longer feel sad. However, seeing their gazes and the absurd words they spoke at that moment still brought a pang of pain. I thought, let it be; after all, they are merely family by name. As the last thing I do as a member of the the Wang Family, since I cannot escape this fate, I might as well marry into it. Perhaps this bride bestowed upon me will have a better life.
Seeing my agreement, Wang Rui let out a sigh of relief, and my mother smiled through her tears. Only my father wore a serious expression, lost in thought. I turned to leave, supported by my maid Bi'er as I walked back step by step.
"Sister, you have always been sensible; you are the one our parents love the most. I have an unreasonable request: Bi'er has been by your side for many years; why not let her serve our mother in your stead? It would be filial of you. After a few days when you marry, she can go with you," Wang Rui's voice came from behind me. I turned to see the calculation and satisfaction in her eyes.
I sneered inwardly; she was indeed thorough in her planning. Afraid I might run away, she even thought to keep someone as leverage.
"Alright," I replied softly, watching the triumph in her gaze while bitter laughter filled my heart.
The red candles flickered as I sat on the edge of the bed, my heart pounding like a drum. Li Cheng's footsteps grew closer until he finally stopped in front of me. He reached out to lift my veil. I looked up at him; our eyes met without further words.
He took my hand, and together we drank the marriage wine, symbolizing our union as husband and wife. It was only at this moment that I clearly saw his face in the candlelight.
"Hey! Isn't he supposed to look fierce? Why is he so handsome?" I blurted out before realizing what I had said. Lowering my head, I dared not speak further. All I heard was his cold snort as he turned to change clothes in the inner chamber and then left the bridal chamber, leaving me alone in the empty room.
The next morning when I awoke, six maids were already standing by the bed, each holding something—either gold and silver jewelry or jade ornaments and fabrics.
"Madam, you are awake! The master has sent us to bring you some gifts for your enjoyment; he still likes you very much," they said.
Bi'er smiled as she leaned closer to me, her face full of joy.
I looked around at the precious items in the room, feeling a stir in my heart. Does he like me?
Li Cheng had unknowingly walked up behind me, gently wrapping his arm around my waist.
"Do you like it?"
His deep voice reached me, and I turned to look at him, my eyes curving into a smile as I hugged him tightly.
"I like it, thank you, my lord."
He seemed taken aback by my embrace, his body stiffening for a moment before he spoke. "Aren't you afraid of me?"
"Since I am married to you, naturally I will hold your hand and walk with you; how could I be afraid of you?"
I looked up at him, my gaze firm.
A hint of surprise flashed in his eyes, as if he hadn't expected such a response from me.
He leaned closer, lifting my chin gently with his hand so that we were eye to eye.
"Do you understand the significance of marrying me?"
He asked.
"I do."
My voice was soft but resolute.
His gaze flickered slightly, seeming to soften, yet still carried an air of distance.
He released me and turned to leave the room.
The next day, on his day off, Li Cheng sat behind me and used a jade comb to brush my long hair. He told me that he had demolished the house in the East Garden and planted a bamboo grove so that I could play the guqin and enjoy tea among the trees in the future.
"Do you like it?"
He looked at me through the bronze mirror, and I smiled faintly at him.
"I like it; it's just a bit extravagant and wasteful. Yue feels guilty about it."
