Looking at the packed graduate school books and suitcase, Wu Rong frowned slightly, feeling a bit uncomfortable, as if he were changing dorms in college, experiencing that annoying feeling of having to adapt to new things.
As he walked past the entrance, he saw Rao Jie busy in the kitchen.
Rao Jie heard the sound of the door opening and said without turning around, "Dinner will be ready in ten minutes."
Wu Rong swallowed, making a sound that seemed to come from his chest, then turned back to glance at the items by the door before returning to his room to put things away.
When he came out again, the table was already set with dishes. His portion had even been served.
Wu Rong noticed that although Rao Jie seemed a bit clumsy in his eyes, she was actually very attentive. After serving him rice for the first time, Wu Rong would use his chopsticks to fluff it up; seeing this, Rao Jie would no longer press the rice down when serving him but would fluff it up first.
The dishes were as delicious as ever.
"Professor Wu, I'm leaving this afternoon. Sorry for the trouble these days," Rao Jie said.
Wu Rong did not look up and replied, "Have you decided where to go?"
Rao Jie nodded and said, "Wei Qian will help me find a job. I haven't decided yet, so I'm planning to move in with Wei Qian for now."
'You might as well stay here until you find a job,' this thought flashed through Wu Rong's mind for a moment but was swallowed down with the sweet and sour pork ribs.
What was he thinking? He certainly didn't want to live under the same roof with someone he barely knew, especially not with someone of the opposite sex!
He must have eaten too much; his brain was probably overloaded.
"What about the graduate school books at the door?" Wu Rong asked casually.
Rao Jie fell silent.
Wu Rong looked up and saw Rao Jie staring blankly, clearly lacking any thoughts about her future. Just then, her phone rang.
Rao Jie immediately looked down to check and saw it was Wei Qian. She smiled apologetically at Wu Rong and quickly answered the call.
"Yes, Wei Qian? Have you made a decision?" Rao Jie said with a smile on her face, though it didn't reach her heart.
"Okay, I understand. You don't need to accompany me; I'll just go directly there and won't go to your place anymore. Alright, I know; I'll call you when I get there. Don't worry!"
After hanging up, Rao Jie turned to Wu Rong, who was looking at her expressionlessly, and smiled broadly, saying, "I found a job that provides food and accommodation! I'll save some money and look for a formal job later before renting a place. Everything will definitely go smoothly."
It was as if she was self-suggesting, Rao Jie tightened her grip on her phone.
In fact, Rao Jie was filled with unease; the path she had originally intended to take was no longer available. Now, being asked to accept a completely new direction in such a short time, she put on the demeanor expected of an adult, but the fear in her heart was hard to soothe.
"If you don't want to smile, then don't. Your forced smile makes me even more uncomfortable. Is pretending to be happy really that good?" Wu Rong suddenly said sharply.
Rao Jie was taken aback by his harshness and forgot to smile. She murmured, "If I don't smile... does that mean I have to cry?"
Wu Rong was momentarily stunned by her retort.
However, Rao Jie rarely became aggressive. "I originally thought that not being able to return home, losing my boyfriend, failing my graduate school entrance exam, and having no money meant the sky was falling down. But it turns out that's not the case. I have found a way to breathe again; this is a good thing, isn't it? Shouldn't I be smiling?"
