On the day of reporting, I put on my neat white coat and hung the "Internship Doctor" badge around my neck as I stepped through the doors of the Neurosurgery Department at the Provincial Hospital.
To my surprise, the supervising doctor turned out to be my former mentor, Qiu Jin. What a coincidence.
At the entrance of the department, other internship doctors were also gathered. Qiu Jin had not yet arrived, and they stood in small groups, whispering among themselves. All of them were female doctors, dressed elegantly and beautifully. The white coats they wore made them stand out even more.
"Dr. Qiu is back," someone called out, and everyone instantly straightened up.
I instinctively looked up to see Qiu Jin walking in front, her coat buttoned neatly, exuding an extraordinary presence. Her features were still as delicate as ever, and her aura remained striking. It felt as if nothing had changed, yet everything seemed different.
"Welcome everyone to the Neurosurgery Internship at the Provincial Hospital. If you have any questions in the future, feel free to ask me," Qiu Jin's voice rang out calmly.
She glanced at her watch and continued, "There are ten minutes left until the morning handover. I will briefly explain the rules of the department."
"First, when asking questions, only work-related matters are allowed."
"Second, always consider the patients' needs."
"Third, acknowledge your role."
"Fourth, keep personal matters separate from work."
"I do not allow anyone to bring personal feelings into their work."
Qiu Jin's gaze swept over everyone before finally landing on me. Her tone was serious: "Do you understand?"
I snapped back to reality and quickly nodded along with the others: "We understand."
"Alright, let's start with self-introductions from left to right."
I nervously swallowed and my mind went blank.
The first few doctors introduced themselves smoothly, but when it was my turn, my brain completely froze.
I stammered, "Hello everyone, I... I am Song Yiqing."
"Song Yiqing."
Qiu Jin quickly glanced at my name tag and noted my name down: "Okay."
Is that it?
I was taken aback and turned to look at the others.
When Qiu Jin remembered their names, he politely greeted them with a "Hello."
But when it came to me, he only said "Okay."
It seemed he had made up his mind to keep his distance from me.
"My name is Wang Lina, please take care of me."
The girl next to me finished her introduction and gave Qiu Jin a sweet smile: "Dr. Qiu, can I call you Teacher Qiu?"
Qiu Jin paused slightly: "No need, just call me Dr. Qiu."
I suddenly turned to look at him.
When we were together before, he always wanted me to call him "A Kong."
Thinking back now, that title was really both cheesy and awkward.
Qiu Jin was very polite to the interns, but seemed particularly cold towards me.
However, I could understand.
After all, I was the one who ended things first.
"Alright, you all can get back to work."
After Qiu Jin finished speaking, he glanced at his watch: "Song Yiqing, stay for a moment."
The others immediately walked away, and only Wang Lina made a funny face at me before leaving.
I clenched the corner of my shirt, standing still: "Dr. Qiu, what do you need from me?"
Qiu Jin took a step closer to me.
I instinctively took a step back, but he grabbed my arm: "Song Yiqing, are you afraid of me?"
Afraid?
I shook my head.
Actually, I wasn't afraid.
I just... felt a bit regretful.
The internship position in the neurosurgery department at the Provincial Hospital was hard to secure. I had spent several late nights crafting a satisfactory resume to obtain this opportunity.
I lifted my head and said clearly, "Dr. Qiu, about the past... I owe you an apology. But please believe me, I won't let personal feelings interfere with my work."
Qiu Jin did not respond directly: "That's good."
He seemed to want to say something more but hesitated.
In the end, he simply said, "Go ahead and get back to work."
