When I returned from the rounds, I was extremely busy. Behind him was an intern female doctor, holding a small notebook and seriously asking questions. Qiu Jin patiently answered her inquiries. Listening to their conversation, a wave of bitterness surged in my heart. Once, he had taught me in the same way. Now, his gentleness was given to someone else.
After finishing with the patients and the morning meeting, he returned without the intern following him. "Song Yiqing, come here for a moment," he suddenly called out to me as he set down the medical records. I put down my work and quickly walked over. "Dr. Qiu."
"There are a few cases I want to discuss with you." He opened his computer, his expression calm and natural. My heart suddenly raced. Normally, even when shadowing teaching doctors during rounds, it was rare to hear a department-level doctor explain cases to us.
I quickly prepared my notebook and followed him into the office. Qiu Jin did not shy away from me and directly opened the computer. I discreetly turned my head but still caught a glimpse of the password on the screen—a set of numbers that felt familiar and easily misunderstood.
"Why are you so close to me?" Qiu Jin suddenly frowned and said coldly, "Can you keep your distance?" I was taken aback, my cheeks instantly flushed. In the past, he would have wanted to keep me close; now, just being a little near him made him look displeased.
After discussing several cases, I walked out of the office with my cheeks still red.
I always feel like Qiu Jin is watching me. That deep gaze seems to look through me and see another person. It's just like when we were in love, and he would gaze at me so affectionately. But when I turn around, all I can see is his indifferent profile. I can't help but wonder if it was just my imagination.
After work, I ran into Wang Lina as soon as I left the department. She saw me and huffed, "Song Yiqing, did you look for Dr. Qiu yesterday?"
I was taken aback. "No, I didn't."
"Then why did he suddenly change his schedule?" Wang Lina pouted. "I was supposed to follow Dr. Qiu on rounds today, but instead..."
It turns out that during rounds yesterday, Wang Lina had been following Qiu Jin the whole time. After the rounds were over, she planned to continue shadowing him. However, Qiu Jin told her to go back and organize the medical records while he called me away instead. Wang Lina had been looking forward to it, but her hopes were dashed, and I ended up benefiting from it.
After hearing her words, I couldn't help but curve my lips into a smile. It seems that Qiu Jin isn't completely heartless towards me.
A week into my internship, I finally got to accompany Qiu Jin on rounds. For me, only by entering the wards and interacting with patients can I truly consider myself a doctor. Before the rounds, I prepared extensively and memorized the patients' medical histories.
One particular patient with a typical subdural hematoma was my main focus. Such a classic case; if I weren't following Qiu Jin, I might never have the chance to encounter it in my lifetime.
On the morning of rounds, I was exceptionally excited. However, when we reached the door of the ward, Qiu Jin stopped me.
"You go to the office and write the medical records," Qiu Jin said.
I was taken aback. "Aren't I going into the ward?"
Qiu Jin's tone was somewhat disdainful. "What can you do in the ward?"
I replied earnestly, "I want to see the patient's symptoms with my own eyes."
"See the patient's symptoms?"
Qiu Jin scoffed, his gaze falling on my medical record book. "These records are all written by you; you know better than anyone else. What more do you need to see?"
I was momentarily speechless. "But..."
"Song Yiqing, medical records are dead; patients are alive."
Qiu Jin's voice turned colder. "Treating illnesses and saving lives is not just about reciting from a textbook."
A chill ran through me, as if I had been doused with cold water.
Qiu Jin had already entered the ward, while I stood frozen in place, unable to follow him inside.
At that moment, I realized once again.
