Qiu Jin's attitude toward me has changed dramatically.
In the past, he would never have treated me with such coldness. Now, he seems to think even a glance at me is too much. I recall just a few days ago when he patiently explained cases to me. Looking back, that was probably just my illusion.
A chasm has formed between Qiu Jin and me that cannot be crossed. The differences and barriers between us have long been deeply rooted. Qiu Jin is a genius, and I am not. When we first got together, I didn't realize this. It wasn't until my first-year final exam when I asked him about a question on my paper where I scored 70 points that I understood. He frowned and asked, "You can't solve such an easy problem?" I felt my face flush with embarrassment.
At that moment, I thought that as long as I worked hard, I could keep up with him. But I was wrong. Some things cannot be achieved through effort alone.
Qiu Jin studies only eight hours a day but easily ranks first in his class. I study for ten hours a day and can barely make it into the top ten. When I ask him questions, he often shows impatience. He says my slow learning makes him doubt life itself. He tells me that I'm simply not suited for studying medicine.
As I reflect on all of this, my heart is filled with mixed emotions. Perhaps I really am not cut out for medicine after all.
No matter how hard I try to catch up, what difference does it make?
During the second week of my internship, I started working the night shift. Qiu Jin said it was part of the internship. But in reality, I was quite resistant to it. After finishing the rounds at night, Qiu Jin told me to go back to the duty room to rest. He said, "The other duty room is already full. If you don't like it, you can choose to sit at the nursing station for the night."
I knew that Qiu Jin's duty room was a single room. I looked at him and said seriously, "Can I go to your duty room?" Qiu Jin frowned slightly and asked, "Song Yiqing, are you flirting with me?" I shook my head and replied earnestly, "I just want to sleep."
Qiu Jin seemed like he wanted to say something else, but I hurriedly interjected, "I'm really tired; I need to sleep." Seeing that I wasn't joking, Qiu Jin finally reluctantly handed me the key to his duty room. I sighed in relief. The treatment of an associate director is indeed good; having a room all to myself. Rather than staying up late studying, it's better to get a good night's sleep.
In the middle of the night, I vaguely felt someone entering the room. That person stood at the foot of my bed, giving me a familiar feeling. I smelled the scent of disinfectant, the fragrance of hand sanitizer, and that refreshing aura. It was Qiu Jin's scent. His breath brushed against my face as he seemed to let out a low sigh. He said, "Song Yiqing, why are you so timid?"
I struggled to open my eyes but could only see a blur. Qiu Jin reached out and gently touched my forehead.
His voice was soft: "Sleep, it's okay."
I felt as if I had fallen under some kind of spell, and I truly drifted into a deep sleep.
In my dream, I seemed to feel Qiu Jin's kiss.
That kiss was gentle and passionate, as if it carried some kind of magic.
It lingered between my lips, making it impossible for me to pull away.
I thought, this must be a dream.
Otherwise, how could it feel so real?
I dreamed of the beautiful moments from five years ago when I was with Qiu Jin.
We walked hand in hand on campus, under the warm autumn sun and the yellowing sycamore trees.
I laughed happily, feeling blissful.
However, dreams eventually come to an end.
When I woke up in the morning, it was already past nine.
I sat up abruptly and rubbed my messy hair.
Did I really sleep until dawn?
And I actually missed my early shift!
I got out of bed and washed my face, and as I went outside, I happened to see Qiu Jin.
He was walking ahead with a group of people following him.
He shone brightly while I felt utterly alone.
His gaze swept over my face but did not linger at all.
I self-deprecatingly thought about bursting into laughter.
I must be crazy to think that the person from last night was Qiu Jin.
He wouldn't even hate me; how could he possibly kiss me?
As I turned my head, I caught a glimpse of the duty roster in the corner.
The information above caught my eye.
Last night's duty room was shared by eight people.
But I actually didn't notice it!
