The university counselor asked our entire class to buy a mountain stone, claiming it was voluntary donations, but those who didn't pay would face consequences. No one in our class ever voluntarily donated a single penny until graduation.
Seeing that her current students were not profitable for her, she became anxious and threatened us with our diplomas to comply. One student, furious, smashed his cup and shouted, "Teacher Liu, do you know who my dad is?" He continued, "If you don't let me graduate today, I guarantee you'll be begging me to accept my diploma tomorrow!" His words became legendary because his family indeed had that kind of influence.
Teacher Liu also wanted to leave herself an escape route, so the matter ended without resolution. We thought it was over. However, Teacher Liu was still fixated on having us buy her a mountain stone. In her view, every student who graduated under her was a testament to her success. She hoped to have a stone placed at the entrance of the college before we graduated so that every future class would know that she, Teacher Liu, made a significant contribution to the school. This was something she wanted to boast about, even if it was unreasonable.
During a class meeting, Teacher Liu tried to persuade us. "Students, after four years of university, what do you think your relationship with the campus is?" No one responded from the audience. She answered herself: "You grow together with the campus; the campus shines because of you."
"Today, you take pride in X University; tomorrow, X University will take pride in you." The students all pretended to gag at her words. Seeing that we were unmoved, Teacher Liu pulled out her trump card: "Students, you're about to graduate; don't you want to leave something behind?"
"A piece of mountain rock, not expensive, just two thousand yuan. With thirty of you, that's only a few dozen yuan per person."
"After you graduate, there will be a piece of mountain rock at the entrance of the college with your class name engraved on it. How glorious is that?"
"When you walk out, you'll have some pride on your faces."
The classmates rolled their eyes, their expressions clearly saying, "I don't care."
The class monitor eagerly chimed in, "Classmates, I think Teacher Liu is right. We should all contribute."
"But monitor, why aren't you contributing?" someone questioned.
The monitor remained unfazed: "I'm a student from a low-income family. The school has waived my tuition for four years, and I have younger siblings who also need to go to school. I can't afford to pay this."
"But Teacher Liu said this rock isn't expensive; it's only two thousand yuan. If we split it among thirty people, that's just a few dozen yuan each."
"You can afford it," another student protested. "If it's voluntary, then I don't want to pay. I'm not willing."
Teacher Liu's expression darkened: "Students who are unwilling to contribute won't graduate; don't come crying to me."
The monitor led the applause: "Teacher Liu is right. I agree to pay this amount; anyone who disagrees is disrespecting me."
The classmates were furious but dared not speak up.
The monitor was a close ally of Teacher Liu and often took advantage of us.
Teacher Liu nodded in satisfaction: "Then it's settled. Monitor, you're in charge of following up."
The monitor stood up: "Okay, Teacher Liu."
As soon as Teacher Liu left the classroom, the monitor announced the meeting was over.
The classmates grumbled as they left the classroom one by one.
Suddenly, the monitor called us back: "Oh right, classmates, I almost forgot. Teacher Liu said this money needs to be collected uniformly."
"Each of you should pay two hundred yuan; you can transfer it to me via WeChat or Alipay."
Some students raised concerns: "Monitor, didn't Teacher Liu say it was voluntary?"
"How can you force us to pay?"
The class monitor shrugged, "It's voluntary; I didn't force you."
"You can choose not to contribute."
"But if you don't, don't blame me when you can't graduate."
After saying this, the monitor hummed a little tune and left.
The students were furious but dared not speak up, feeling a surge of frustration.
After all, no one wanted to risk their graduation over such a trivial matter.
Once back in the dormitory, the monitor sent out a notification in the class group.
"Classmates, I'm your monitor. As I mentioned in the classroom earlier, each person is voluntarily donating two hundred for purchasing stones. Just transfer the money to me."
"Please reply upon receipt."
"Voluntary principle, no coercion."
"Please reply upon receipt."
"Voluntary principle, no coercion."
He repeatedly sent this message.
Yet, this "voluntary principle" contradicted the notion of "collecting everything together."
If you don't pay, you won't graduate.
Who would dare not to pay?
