Gu Chen walked up to me, his deep eyes shimmering with emotions I couldn't comprehend.
He slowly knelt on one knee, took out a dazzling diamond necklace from a brocade box, gently took my hand, and placed the necklace around my neck.
The sudden gesture caught me completely off guard. I stared at him in a daze, my mind blank, forgetting how to react.
“Xiaoman,” Gu Chen's voice was low and magnetic, as if infused with some kind of magic that instantly pulled me back to reality. “I know this is abrupt, but I don’t want to miss any more opportunities.”
He lifted his head and gazed deeply into my eyes, speaking each word with sincerity: “I love you. From the moment I first saw you, my heart has been completely occupied by you. Your talent, your bravery, your kindness—all of it deeply attracts me and makes it impossible for me to let go.”
His confession was like a thunderclap in the silent banquet hall, drawing everyone's attention to us. Whispers, gasps of surprise, and blessings intertwined in the air.
I was utterly stunned. Gu Chen's declaration felt like an unexpected storm that completely disturbed the calm lake of my heart.
I didn’t even have the courage to look at Yan Shi’s expression; I couldn’t imagine how he must be feeling at that moment.
“Xiaoman,” Gu Chen's voice rang out again, tinged with a hint of pleading. “Give me a chance, okay? Let me take care of you, protect you, and make you the happiest woman in the world.”
His gaze was sincere and passionate, as if it held some kind of magic that made it impossible for me to refuse.
My heart was filled with emotion; tears blurred my vision without me realizing it. I choked up and couldn’t find the words to respond.
Gu Chen slowly stood up and gently wiped away my tears. Then he leaned down and softly kissed my lips.
I felt the soft sensation on my lips, and for a moment, my thoughts came to a halt. Gu Chen's kiss was passionate and assertive yet carried a hint of careful tenderness, as if he were cherishing a precious treasure. The air around us seemed to thin out; I could hear my own rapid heartbeat and felt the gazes of the crowd—some were filled with blessings, others with surprise or curiosity—but none of that mattered; in my world at that moment, there was only Gu Chen.
“Gu Chen!” Yan Shi's angry voice sliced through the intimate atmosphere like lightning. He strode up to us and forcefully pushed Gu Chen away, glaring at him with gritted teeth. “Are you looking for death?”
Yan Shi's sudden appearance jolted me back to reality. I pushed Gu Chen away and stood up, coldly looking at Yan Shi. My tone was calm but carried a warning: “Yan Shi, don’t go too far!”
Yan Shi seemed to completely ignore my words, his eyes glaring red as he stared at Gu Chen, his fists clenched tightly, making cracking sounds as if he was about to throw a punch at any moment. Seeing this, I quickly stepped forward, positioning myself in front of Gu Chen, my tone icy. "Yan Shi, what do you want? This is a charity gala; do you want everyone to see your joke?"
My words acted like a bucket of cold water, extinguishing the anger in Yan Shi's eyes. He took a deep breath, struggling to suppress his fury, but his gaze remained fixed on Gu Chen. He looked at me, his eyes filled with hurt and pain. "Xiaoman, are you so eager to get rid of me? Do you love him that much?"
There was a tremor in Yan Shi's voice, and I could feel his pain and despair at that moment. My heart trembled slightly, but I quickly restrained my emotions and maintained my cold tone. "Yan Shi, it's over between us. Why do you keep clinging on?"
"Over? Who says it's over?" Yan Shi suddenly grabbed my wrist and pulled me closer to him, his tone domineering and forceful. "Li Xiaoman, let me tell you, as long as I don't let go, you will always be my woman!"
I forcefully shook off Yan Shi's hand, filled with disgust. "Yan Shi, you're impossible! We've broken up; who I'm with now has nothing to do with you!"
"Heh," Yan Shi sneered, his eyes full of mockery. "Who you're with has nothing to do with me? Li Xiaoman, do you dare say you've fallen for him? Do you dare say you're not with him just to spite me?"
Every word from Yan Shi felt like a sharp blade stabbing at my heart. I took a deep breath, trying to calm the turmoil within me, and coldly looked at Yan Shi. "Yes, I am doing this to spite you. I want you to know that without you, I can still live well; I can still find my own happiness!"
"You..." Yan Shi was completely enraged by my words. He raised his hand as if he wanted to hit me but was stopped by Shen Jing, who had witnessed the entire scene.
"Enough!" Shen Jing stood in front of me, glaring at Yan Shi with a fierce tone. "Yan Shi, have you made enough of a scene? Xiaoman has already broken up with you; you have no right to control her now!"
Yan Shi looked at Shen Jing and then back at me before finally letting go helplessly. His eyes were filled with loneliness and pain. He gave me one last deep look before turning away from the banquet hall, his back appearing desolate and forlorn.
Watching Yan Shi leave, my heart was filled with mixed emotions, but mostly there was relief. Between him and me was like two intersecting lines destined to drift further apart.
"Xiaoman, are you okay?" Shen Jing asked with concern.
I shook my head to indicate that I was fine and then turned to look at Gu Chen. His eyes were filled with worry and compassion. I smiled slightly at him to express my gratitude for his support.
Gu Chen returned my smile gently and then took my hand softly. "Let's go."
I nodded and left this place filled with awkwardness and memories alongside Gu Chen.
I noticed Gu Chen's hand gently stroking the back of mine as if silently comforting me. I took a deep breath, striving to calm the emotions swirling within me.
"Don't mind him, as long as you're okay," Gu Chen said softly, a hint of concern in his voice as he gently pulled me into his embrace. His hug was warm and safe, providing a sense of comfort on this cold night.
"I'm just... a little tired," I murmured, resting my head on his shoulder.
"I understand," Gu Chen replied, lightly patting my back without saying anything more.
We held each other quietly for a while until my emotions gradually calmed down, and I finally stepped out of his embrace.
"Let's go," I said, lifting my head to give him a grateful smile before walking toward the exit of the banquet hall.
Gu Chen followed closely behind, maintaining a respectful distance as he silently accompanied me.
Once we left the banquet hall, I took a deep breath. The cool night breeze brushed against my cheeks, slowly clearing my muddled thoughts. I turned to look at Gu Chen, who stood not far from me, holding my handbag.
"Thank you for helping me so much tonight," I said sincerely as I approached him.
"No need to thank me; I just did what I should have done," Gu Chen replied gently as he handed me my handbag. "It's getting late; let me take you home."
"Okay, thank you for your help." I accepted his kindness without hesitation since it was indeed late and I needed some time to process my feelings.
We walked side by side on the bustling streets of Huahai City. The neon lights illuminated the city in vibrant colors but did nothing to brighten Yan Shi's troubled heart. He walked alone on the empty streets, replaying the scenes from the banquet hall in his mind.
Li Xiaoman's resolute gaze, her cold words, and her unhesitating departure with Gu Chen felt like poisonous thorns piercing deeply into his heart, causing him immense pain.
He recalled the promises he had made to Li Xiaoman and the moments they had shared together. Those beautiful memories now felt like sharp blades mercilessly tearing at his heart.
He finally realized that his arrogance and pride had pushed Li Xiaoman further away over time.
He hated his own dullness, despised his cowardice, and regretted not understanding Li Xiaoman's feelings sooner.
If only time could rewind, he would cherish her properly and never let her suffer again.
However, in this world, there are no "ifs." The mistakes he made are destined to come with a price.
"Li Xiaoman, do you really... not want me anymore?" Yan Shi closed his eyes in pain, letting tears slip from the corners.
On the other side, Su Qingwan sat in her car, witnessing the entire scene of Yan Shi losing control over Li Xiaoman. A flame of jealousy burned fiercely in her heart.
She couldn't believe that the usually proud Yan Shi would lose his composure for a woman, and that this woman was someone she had always wanted to get rid of!
"Li Xiaoman, what gives you the right? What gives you the right to receive his love?" Su Qingwan clenched her fists tightly, her nails digging deep into her flesh, yet she felt no pain.
She would never let Li Xiaoman off easily; she would make her pay for her actions!
A ruthless glint flashed in Su Qingwan's eyes as she took out her phone and dialed a number. "Help me with something..."
