At night, Lin Xinhui put the freshly baked cookies into a glass jar while taking a deep breath, deciding it was time to explore the secrets of this old apartment. In her mind was the strange note and the group of seemingly non-existent "playmates" mentioned by Xiao Mei.
The cold tiles of the kitchen floor touched the soles of her feet, and the pot lid on the gas stove occasionally made a "ding-dang" sound.
No longer as flustered and bewildered as when I first moved in, Lin Xinhui now has a sharp look in his eyes, like a detective searching for clues. He gazes at the elegantly hung doorplate - 202 - which is Mrs. Wang's residence.
Behind a weathered wooden door inside a large building, Lin Xinhui is wearing casual home clothes and holding freshly baked cookies. After pressing the aluminum doorbell button, a few seconds later, a high-pitched yet friendly voice comes from inside.
"Hello? Who is it?"
"Mrs. Wang, it's me, Lin Xinhui, your new neighbor on the fourth floor. Can I chat with you?"
"Oh, Miss Lin, please come in."
Upon entering Mrs. Wang's home, the first thing that catches the eye is a large rose mural, luxurious European-style sofas, and crystal chandeliers, giving this ordinary old apartment a vintage luxurious atmosphere.
"Mrs. Wang, you've decorated this place beautifully, and this mural is quite extraordinary."
Mrs. Wang smiled and said, "Oh, that was the birthday gift my son gave me last year. Look, there's also this porcelain collection, all from him."
"Hehe, it seems like your son really understands how to be filial to you."
After a few casual remarks about the home decor, Lin Xinhui knew it was time to bring up the real question.
"Mrs. Wang, the main reason I came here is to ask if you have seen any of the new friends my daughter Xiao Mei has made in this building recently."
Mrs. Wang's smile suddenly froze, and her eyes slightly avoided contact.
"New friend? Oh, I didn't see anyone. I've been at home these days and haven't gone out."
Lin Xinhui remained calm on the surface and asked, "So, Mrs. Wang, you have been living here for many years. Have there been any special events in this building in the past? For example, any unusual or eerie occurrences?"
Mrs. Wang A hint of wariness appeared in her eyes, but was quickly concealed.
"Here? Oh, nothing special, just a regular residential area. Why do you have such a question?"
"No, it's nothing. Just curious, as a newcomer, I want to understand more about the surrounding environment and neighbors."
Mrs. Wang ultimately couldn't resist Lin Xinhui's persistent questioning, and finally sighed, saying, "I have heard some rumors before, but as you know, these things are always impossible to verify."
Lin Xinhui cleared her throat, trying to steer the conversation, "Rumors? Is it about that murder case?"
Mrs. Wang's eyes turned cold, then she turned her head, avoiding Mrs. Lin's gaze, "Well, Mrs. Lin, that thing... indeed, many people know about it. But to be honest, since that incident, the atmosphere here has become very different. Don't you feel that this building is a bit strange?"
Lin Xinhui paused for a moment, and the tense atmosphere felt like a torn cloth, hanging in the air. "Yes, my daughter also felt that way. She said some children here were playing with her, but I checked, and there are no other children around here at all."
Mrs. Wang finally stopped her movements, realizing something was not quite right. She straightened her body and spoke in a serious tone: "Mrs. Lin, what did your daughter see? Who was she playing with?"
"This is what I wanted to know. She always says those kids are playing with her, but every time I go to see, there's only one ball there, nothing else."
Mrs. Wang took a deep breath, seeming to consider whether to reveal more. Finally, she sighed and said, "Since you've said that much, I'll tell you. Those kids might be..."
Just then, a scream came from downstairs, interrupting Mrs. Wang. The two looked at each other, and Lin Xinhui felt her heart racing, as if sensing an unusual event about to happen. She quickly followed Mrs. Wang and took the elevator to the source of the sound.
When they arrived at the first floor by elevator, they glanced at the security guard and saw that it was a new one on duty, not Mr. Liu. At that moment, the security guard was dozing off, seemingly not hearing the sound.
"There's no elevator to the basement, so we have to walk down," Mrs. Wang said to Lin Xinhui, who nodded in response.
The two of them had just stepped off the basement stairs, and the air seemed to thicken. The flickering lights on either side of the hallway couldn't hide the deep sense of unease.
Soon after, a subtle stench grew stronger as they approached the basement, causing Mrs. Lin and Mrs. Wang to instinctively cover their mouths and noses.
Finally arrived at the second floor of the underground parking lot, the two of them stood at the corridor and hesitated upon seeing a small storage room. Mrs. Wang looked at Mrs. Lin with an almost pleading expression. "Do we really have to go in?"
Mrs. Lin nodded with determination, "This is no longer just our problem, it also concerns the child. We must find out the source of that sound."
Mrs. Wang took a deep breath and then pushed open the door at the end of the hallway. A wave of darkness greeted them, almost swallowing up all the light. The two of them decided to use the flashlight function on their phones to illuminate the area.
At first, they didn't notice anything unusual, just feeling a gust of cold wind coming from an unknown direction.
Just as Lin Xinhui was about to say "Why don't we go back," the beam of the flashlight shone on a half-open door, with a neatly stacked pile of notes at the entrance.
"Look! It's these notes!" Lin Xinhui pointed, trembling.
Mrs. Wang shook her flashlight to make sure it was working, then carefully walked over to pick up a piece of paper.
"Don't pick it up!" Lin Xinhui suddenly shouted, feeling like something was about to happen around them, but it was already too late.
Mrs. Wang's hand touched the piece of paper, and the entire floor suddenly lit up, shimmering like a night sky full of stars.
But these were not stars; they were countless eyes, staring at them intently.
"What are these... what are these?" Mrs. Wang could hardly speak.
The "eyes" began to move, forming a tight web, as if to enclose the two of them.
Lin Xinhui grabbed Mrs. Wang's hand and urgently said to her, "Run!"
They ran frantically towards the end of the corridor, but it seemed endless, and the door was getting farther and farther away. The more they ran, the closer those strange "eyes" approached.
In the end, the two of them desperately rushed out of the small room on the second floor of the basement, using up the last bit of strength to close the door behind them. When they returned to their own floor, they were both panting, their faces filled with fear.
Lin Xinhui: "What was that just now?"
Mrs. Wang: "I don't know, I really don't know! I regret going into that room and seeing those notes now."
Lin Xinhui gazed at Mrs. Wang, whose expression kept changing, seemingly enveloped by an indescribable fear.
Her face turned from purple to white, as if she had experienced an extremely dark moment. A deep sense of regret surged in her heart. Mrs. Wang didn't know if it was because she had revealed too much information to Lin Xinhui, making herself a target as well.
Mrs. Wang looked around as if searching for an excuse to change the subject, but in the end, she didn't say anything and hurriedly returned to her apartment, closing the door tightly.
Lin Xinhui was full of questions and thought, "So many strange things have happened, what's going on?" At the same time, he worried about his daughter Xiao Mei and wondered what to do next.
