"Happy Birthday."
There was no signature, no note.
I let out a cold laugh, feeling a bit bitter inside.
After six years of relationship, it had ultimately turned into a wisp of smoke.
That night, Ma Yuewen did not come to find me.
I felt something was off and called him; he was already drunk.
"Where are you?" I asked.
Ma Yuewen gave me an address.
I hung up the phone, feeling uncomfortable.
Today is my birthday; Ma Yuewen clearly remembered, so why didn't he come to find me?
I suspected he was lying, but I wanted to know the truth even more.
Following the address Ma Yuewen provided, I arrived outside the bar.
After waiting for a while, I saw Ma Yuewen come out, accompanied by my best friend Zhao Qian.
I felt as if I had been struck by lightning; my mind buzzed, and I was completely stunned.
How could Ma Yuewen and Zhao Qian be together?
What was their relationship?
Sitting in the car, my mind was a mess, and I couldn't make sense of it.
After a while, Ma Yuewen and Zhao Qian parted ways.
I watched Zhao Qian gradually walk away before getting out of the car.
I didn't want Zhao Qian to see me, so I deliberately waited for a moment.
I walked up to Ma Yuewen; when he saw me, a surprised expression appeared on his face.
"Fangfang, what are you doing here?" he asked with a smile.
"If I don't come, how would I know you're having such a good time?" I looked at him coldly.
Ma Yuewen was taken aback. "Did you see Zhao Qian?"
"How could you be together?" I asked, trying to suppress my anger.
"I met her at the bar," Ma Yuewen explained. "We had a drink together, and just as you called me, I was worried you might misunderstand, so I invited her to come out with me. I thought when you arrived, she could explain things to you in person."
"Is that so?" I scoffed. "What is your relationship?"
"What relationship could I have with her?" Ma Yuewen said helplessly. "Fangfang, don't overthink it."
I stared at him, feeling a whirlwind of emotions inside.
Just then, my phone rang.
I answered the call; it was Zhao Qian's voice. "Fangfang, I'm at your door. When will you be back?"
"I'm outside," I replied flatly. "I'll be back soon."
"Okay, I'll wait for you."
I hung up and said to Ma Yuewen, "I'm going back now."
"I'll drive you."
"No need."
"Fangfang," Ma Yuewen grabbed my hand. "Are you angry?"
"I'm not," I shook off his hand. "I'm leaving."
I got into the car, my mind in a haze.
On the way home, I recalled how Zhao Qian seemed to avoid me on my birthday in the past. I remembered that during my freshman year, when I wanted to invite Zhao Qian out to celebrate my birthday, she said she was going out with her boyfriend instead.
I was feeling down for a while, thinking that I wasn't valued. Later, I found out that Zhao Qian hadn't gone out with her boyfriend that day at all. Why did she lie to me? I recalled the last time in the car when Zhao Qian deliberately changed the subject, not letting me ask Ma Yuewen why he was with Fang Hui. I also remembered back in college when my childhood friend pursued Zhao Qian. She clearly didn't like him but kept delaying her rejection, which left my friend disheartened and almost led to an accident...
My heart sank. Did Zhao Qian see me as Qingqing? The thought sent chills down my spine. Was Ma Yuewen with me for the same reason? I clearly remember that day when I had acute gastroenteritis; it was Ma Yuewen who took me to the hospital. But before that, I had never had acute gastroenteritis—how could I suddenly be so ill? And who was it that comforted me in the hospital that day? Was it really Ma Yuewen? Or someone else?
As these thoughts raced through my mind, I broke out in a cold sweat. I needed to find out the truth immediately!
