I am Guo Lingxi, a divine physician. One day, I accidentally saved a gloomy and ruthless man, and then he became attached to me. I did not want to marry him, but he said to me, "If you dare not marry me, I will kill you." To save my life, I had no choice but to marry him.
After the marriage, I found that he didn't seem so terrifying after all and treated me well, so I gradually fell in love with him. However, just when I was about to confess my feelings to him, I discovered his secret.
My name is Guo Lingxi, and I am a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner. My dream is to heal the world, while love is merely an illusion to me. Yet fate played a trick on me; I saved a man but ended up losing myself in the process.
“Lingxi, just agree to it. Ming'er’s life was saved by you; you cannot turn a blind eye!” Mr. Du said tearfully, while I felt like I was sitting on pins and needles.
“Uncle Du, saving Du Ming is my duty as a physician, but marriage is not something to be taken lightly,” I tried to keep my tone gentle since the person before me was Mr. Du, the chairman of the Du Group who could easily manipulate Jianghan City.
“How can it be taken lightly? You saved Ming'er; you are our Du Family's benefactor. We will treat you well!” Mr. Du spoke sincerely as if I were some rare treasure, but I knew he only wanted to use me to stabilize his sickly son.
“Mr. Du, you should understand that I am not interested in a business marriage; my dream is...”
“Enough.” A cold voice interrupted me. Du Ming had emerged from the hospital room at some point, his face pale but his gaze sharp like that of a hawk. “Miss Guo, don’t you want to heal the world? Marry me, and I can provide you with the best resources to build the best hospital and treat the most patients.”
I was stunned. What was this? Trading resources for marriage? What did he take me for? Taking a deep breath to suppress my anger, I calmly replied, “Mr. Du, you misunderstand; I practice medicine to save lives, not for fame or profit.”
"Fame and fortune? If you marry me, you'll have endless fame and fortune!" Du Ming's tone carried a hint of sarcasm. "Do you really think your limited medical skills can save the world? Without my help, you won't be able to do anything."
His words pierced my heart like a needle, and I clenched my fists tightly, my nails almost digging into my skin.
"Ming!" Mr. Du snapped, "How can you speak to Lingxi like that?"
Du Ming ignored him and turned back to the hospital room, leaving Mr. Du and me exchanging glances.
In the end, I agreed to this absurd marriage, not because of Du Ming's resources, but for Mr. Du. Du Ming was weak and needed care, while Mr. Du was getting older; I couldn't let him worry about his son any longer.
After marrying into the Du Family, I realized that life in a wealthy family was far more complicated than I had imagined. Mr. Du appeared amiable but was actually cunning and made things difficult for me at every turn. He often deliberately set challenges for me, asking me to do things beyond my capabilities, hoping I would give up.
For instance, during meals, he would intentionally ask me to identify various rare medicinal herbs, some of which I had never even heard of.
"Lingxi, you're studying medicine; you should know these herbs, right?" Mr. Du said with a smile that belied the cunning glint in his eyes.
I calmly set down my chopsticks and replied lightly, "Uncle Du, although I study medicine, I'm not omniscient. These herbs are too precious; I've only seen them in ancient texts and have never encountered them in person."
My honesty seemed to catch Mr. Du off guard; he coughed a couple of times and stopped pressing me.
However, through my medical skills, I gradually earned the respect of some servants in the Du Family. When I discovered that Old Li, the gardener, had suffered from rheumatism for many years, I took the initiative to treat him with acupuncture. After several sessions, Old Li's condition improved significantly, and his attitude towards me became respectful.
"Dr. Guo, you truly have miraculous hands!" Old Li praised my medical skills to anyone who would listen.
I knew that in the Du Family, I couldn't just be Du Ming's wife; I needed to establish my own standing.
My friend Bai Wei rushed back from abroad after hearing about my marriage.
"Lingxi, have you really thought this through? The wealthy are deep as the sea; do you really want to jump into this fire pit?" Bai Wei looked at me with concern.
"I have no choice," I replied with a bitter smile. "But don't worry; I'll take care of myself."
Bai Wei held my hand seriously and said, "Lingxi, remember that you are an independent individual, not anyone's accessory. You need to learn to protect yourself and not let yourself be wronged."
Bai Wei's words awakened me. I needed to learn how to adapt to life in a wealthy family and also how to protect myself. Not long after Bai Wei left, the Du Family held a banquet inviting the city's elite and powerful figures. As the Young Mistress of the Du Family, I naturally had to attend. The banquet was extravagantly luxurious; amidst the fragrant attire and clinking glasses, I felt out of place among it all.
"Oh look, isn't this Sister Lingxi? Why are you hiding here alone?" A delicate voice rang in my ear. Turning around, I saw a flamboyantly dressed woman holding a wine glass with a smirk on her face.
She was Meng Xiaoman, a well-known socialite in town and one of Du Ming's admirers. I knew she was here today to cause trouble for me.
"Miss Meng is joking; I just found it a bit stuffy here and wanted some fresh air," I replied coolly, not wanting to engage further with her.
"Sister Lingxi seems quite lively; however, I've heard that Master Du isn't feeling well—are you still in the mood to enjoy the flowers here?" Meng Xiaoman raised her voice deliberately as if trying to draw attention from those around us.
I took a deep breath to suppress my anger and calmly said, "Thank you for your concern, Miss Meng; Ming's health has improved significantly—there's no need for you to worry."
"Is that so? Then I can rest easy," Meng Xiaoman said, feigning surprise. "I thought that Sister Lingxi had exceptional medical skills and could help Master Du recover soon! After all, Master Du rejected my marriage proposal for you back then!"
Her tone was laced with provocation, and the people around us began to whisper. I felt my cheeks flush slightly.
"Miss Meng is joking. Ming and I are truly in love, and it has nothing to do with you." I looked her straight in the eye and said each word clearly, "Moreover, I trust Ming's judgment; he wouldn't be interested in someone like you..."
I deliberately paused, then smiled as I added, "a frivolous woman."
Meng Xiaoman's expression changed, and she seemed about to say something else, but I ignored her and turned to walk into the crowd. I felt a gaze watching me intently from the shadows; without needing to look back, I knew it was Du Ming.
After the banquet ended, I returned to my room but found that the light in Du Ming's study was still on. I walked in and saw him sitting at his desk, holding a document. When he heard my footsteps, he looked up, a complex emotion flickering in his eyes.
"You’re here," he said calmly, his tone revealing no hint of joy or anger.
I nodded and approached him, asking, "What are you looking at?"
He was silent for a moment before handing me the document and saying, "You can take a look for yourself."
I took the document and opened it, my face instantly turning pale. It was an investigation report about me, detailing all my information from birth to now, even including some embarrassing stories from my childhood.
