She thought about how she could take this one million and live extravagantly, and her heart raced with excitement. In the end, she decided to give it a try; after all, she believed that Du Qiaoyun would ensure her safety. Su Mengman thought it through and turned to head towards the hospital.
Shen Xingyu returned to the ward and found that Ye Jingzhu's belongings were all gone. He anxiously shouted, "Nurse! Nurse!" The nurse heard Shen Xingyu's loud call and hurriedly ran in from outside. "What happened?"
"Where is the patient in here?" Shen Xingyu asked, pointing at the bed.
"Oh," the nurse explained, "that young lady was picked up by her mother this morning."
"Mother?" Shen Xingyu knew that Ye Jingzhu's stepmother, Su Mengman, was not good to her at all; in fact, it could be said that she treated her very poorly. A bad premonition arose in his heart, and he quickly asked, "Where did they go?"
"Well, I don't know," the nurse shook her head. "Her mother took her out of the hospital, and we didn't ask any further."
Shen Xingyu felt that something was wrong; he had to find Ye Jingzhu. He shouted at the nurse, "Quickly find out where they went!"
"Yes," the nurse was startled by Shen Xingyu and hurriedly left the ward.
Ten minutes later, the nurse returned to the ward and said to Shen Xingyu, "The hospital has no information about them."
"What?" Shen Xingyu staggered slightly and leaned against the head of the bed; he felt as if his head might explode.
"Mr. Shen, please don't panic," the nurse comforted him. "They may have really gone home."
"Impossible." Shen Xingyu knew Su Mengman; she would never be so kind-hearted. He gritted his teeth and immediately dialed Little Ma's number, asking him to find out Su Mengman's whereabouts right away.
Shen Xingyu spent a sleepless night sitting in the ward waiting for news; every minute and second was a torment for him. He couldn't imagine what would happen if Su Mengman did something to Ye Jingzhu. Finally, early the next morning, he received a call from Little Ma, but it was terrible news.
"Mr. Shen, it's not good," Little Ma's anxious voice came through the phone.
Shen Xingyu's body stiffened, and he trembled as he asked, "What happened?"
"A female corpse was found on the river. I saw it reported in the news; it looks a lot like Miss Ye," Little Ma said cautiously, knowing Shen Xingyu's feelings for Ye Jingzhu.
"What?" Shen Xingyu felt as if his brain had exploded. He looked out the window in disbelief. How could Ye Jingzhu be dead?
"Mr. Shen, are you okay?" Little Ma asked worriedly when Shen Xingyu remained silent for a long time. "Mr. Shen, are you alright?"
"I'm fine." Shen Xingyu suppressed the unease in his heart and said to Little Ma, "Tell me the address immediately; I'm going there now."
"Yes."
Shen Xingyu arrived at the parking lot, got into his car, fastened his seatbelt, and drove towards the river.
All the way, he kept reassuring himself that it couldn't be true; Ye Jingzhu would definitely be fine.
She loved him so much; how could she bear to leave him?
Yet, his heart was filled with an ominous premonition.
With a screech, he slammed on the brakes, and his car crashed into the guardrail.
Shen Xingyu was distracted and anxious, which caused him to hit the barrier.
He lifted his head and looked ahead, only to see a familiar figure standing in front of the car. The figure resembled Wanwan but also looked like Ye Jingzhu.
He reached out to grab her but couldn't hold on to anything.
Finally, darkness enveloped him, and he fainted.
