The seatbelt pressed against Lin Lu's chest, making her feel a bit suffocated. She gently tugged at it, wondering when this mountain road would end.
At that moment, the car jolted violently, and Lin Lu let out a startled cry as her body uncontrollably tilted to the side. "Be careful!" A hand firmly grasped her arm, pulling her back into her seat.
Still shaken, Lin Lu looked up to meet Yan Liming's concerned gaze. "Are you okay? The mountain road is bumpy; please be careful."
Lin Lu's cheeks flushed slightly as she lowered her head and whispered, "Thank you."
In the back seat, Chen Xue observed their interaction with disdain. She curled her lip and lightly nudged Li Xue beside her with her elbow, whispering, "Look at them, they’re acting so much."
Li Xue followed Chen Xue's gaze toward Lin Lu and Yan Liming, timidly nodding without saying a word.
Chen Xue turned her attention back to the passing shadows of trees outside the window, a barely noticeable cold smile creeping onto her lips as she thought to herself: Lin Lu, the real show is just beginning.

Suddenly, the car shook violently, and the engine emitted a grating roar before completely shutting off.
"What happened?" Lin Xuemin, sitting in the passenger seat, was the first to react. He unbuckled his seatbelt and turned around to ask, "Did we get a flat tire?"
"I don't know..." The driver looked pale and panicked. "I'll go check."
Lin Lu felt a wave of unease wash over her. She unfastened her seatbelt and looked out through the window, seeing dense woods surrounding them. The sky was overcast, and a damp atmosphere filled the air. "It seems like we're in a valley..."
Chen Xue's sharp voice interrupted Lin Lu's thoughts. "This lousy place doesn't even have a signal; how did the production team arrange this?" As she complained, she took out her phone only to find the screen completely black. "What terrible luck!"
Taking a deep breath, Lin Lu tried to remain calm. She opened her backpack and began checking its contents: energy bars, a water bottle, a first aid kit... Thankfully, everything was mostly intact.
"What are you doing?" Chen Xue noticed Lin Lu's actions and walked over with a mocking tone. "Do you really think these things will keep us alive? Don’t be naive!"
Lin Lu ignored Chen Xue's sarcastic remarks and continued inspecting each item in her backpack to ensure they were all in good condition.
"Don't waste your effort," Yan Liming's voice came from outside the car. "The driver said it might be an engine failure and we need to contact the production team to send someone for repairs."
"What?" Chen Xue's voice rose by an octave. "We're out in the middle of nowhere; how are we supposed to contact the production team? There's no signal on our phones!"
Yan Liming ignored Chen Xue's complaints. He walked to the back of the car, opened the trunk, and began checking the tools inside. "Maybe I can give it a try," he said calmly.
"You know how to fix cars?" Chen Xue looked at him incredulously, her eyes filled with doubt as she sized him up.
Yan Liming didn't respond. He took out a wrench, screwdriver, and other tools from the toolbox and began examining the car's engine carefully. His movements were skilled and professional, contrasting sharply with his previously gentle demeanor, which surprised everyone present, especially Chen Xue, who stood nearby with a fluctuating expression.
Time passed slowly as darkness enveloped the area. Unknown bird calls echoed through the woods, adding to the eerie atmosphere. Lin Lu paced anxiously, glancing at Yan Liming from time to time, hoping for good news.
"How's it going?" Lin Xuemin approached Yan Liming and asked in a low voice.
"The situation isn't optimistic," Yan Liming wiped the sweat from his forehead. "The wiring is severely aged and needs replacement parts, but I didn't bring any spares."
"What do we do now?" Lin Lu felt her heart sink.
Yan Liming pondered for a moment and said, "I'll do my best to fix it; hopefully, we can hold out until we find a place with signal."
He continued to fiddle with the components as the last rays of sunlight bathed him in a golden glow.
Lin Xuemin patted Lin Lu's shoulder and softly reassured her, "Don't worry; we'll be fine." He turned to Yan Liming and asked, "Do you need our help?"
Yan Liming shook his head. "You two should go look around for a water source or somewhere to take shelter from the rain; it's getting dark."
The Lin siblings got out of the car with Yan Liming. As dusk fell, shadows danced among the trees, and the mountain breeze rustled the leaves, as if they were whispering softly.
"Let's go." Lin Lu took a deep breath, trying to calm her anxious emotions, and walked ahead into the woods. Lin Xuemin quickly followed, walking alongside her.
"Be careful and watch your step," Lin Xuemin advised, her gaze scanning the surroundings warily.
Lin Lu nodded and slowed her pace. She carefully observed the environment around her, hoping to find some useful clues.
"Look!" Lin Lu pointed at a cluster of plants not far away and exclaimed excitedly, "That's Fiddlehead Fern; it's edible!"
Lin Xuemin walked over, examined it closely, and after confirming it was indeed Fiddlehead Fern, a smile spread across her face. "Looks like we won't go hungry tonight."
Lin Lu took out a water bottle from her backpack and handed it to Lin Xuemin. "I'm going to check if there's a water source over there."
"Be careful," Lin Xuemin said as she took the water bottle, watching Lin Lu head toward a nearby stream.
Chen Xue and Li Xue sat in the car, looking through the window at the busy figures of the Lin siblings, their faces filled with jealousy and resentment.
"Hmph, what are they pretending for!" Chen Xue said through gritted teeth. "It's just that they can recognize a few wild vegetables; what's so impressive about that!"
Li Xue chimed in, "Exactly! They might be doing this on purpose to show off to us."
Chen Xue snorted coldly, a hint of malice flashing in her eyes. "Just wait and see; I won't let them have it easy!"
