Looking at these messages, I felt a warmth in my heart.
Me: "Thank you all for your concern. I transferred schools due to some reasons. Hopefully, we can meet again someday."
"Such a pity, we won't be able to see Li Wan anymore."
"Yeah, I will miss her."
"Li Wan, make sure to keep in touch with us."
...
After chatting with everyone, I exited the group chat and glanced at my friend list.
The gentle senior's profile picture was dimmed.
I felt a bit disappointed.
Just then, his profile picture lit up.
Du Jun: "Li Wan, I heard you transferred schools."
Me: "Yeah."
Du Jun: "It's okay, wherever you are, as long as it's you, I'll support you."
Du Jun: "Li Wan, you really look great in skirts."
Du Jun: "I prepared a gift for you. I wanted to give it to you today, but unfortunately, you weren't here."
Du Jun: "But it's fine, I'll give it to you next time we meet."
Me: "What gift?"
Du Jun: "It's a secret."
Me: "..."
Du Jun: "It's getting late, get some rest. See you tomorrow."
Me: "See you tomorrow."
Putting down my phone, I felt a bit regretful.
Tomorrow, I wouldn't be able to see him.
There was a supermarket downstairs, so I went down to buy some frozen dumplings and instant noodles.
When I returned home, I took a shower.
Coming out of the bathroom, I noticed it had started to rain heavily outside.
I walked to the balcony and looked out.
A curtain of rain enveloped the city, and the neon lights flickered with a mesmerizing glow through the downpour.
Suddenly, I noticed a boy standing not far below, holding an umbrella in the rain, his gaze intensely fixed on me. He wore a white shirt and black pants, his tall and slender figure striking. The brim of his umbrella obscured most of his face, revealing only his sharp chin. His lips were thin and pale, resembling cherry blossoms freshly washed by rain.
He slowly raised his hand, delicate green leaves pinched between his long fingers. He brought the leaf to his lips and gently kissed it. My heart skipped a beat. When I opened my eyes again, he had vanished into the night.
That night, I had a nightmare. In my dream, I was wearing a floral dress that my mother had bought for me to school, but I was ridiculed by my classmates.
“Hahaha, Li Wan, you’re so grown up yet still wearing a floral dress; how embarrassing.”
“Yeah, who else in our class wears floral dresses?”
“Li Wan, aren’t you supposed to be quiet? Why are you dressed like this all of a sudden?”
“Are you trying to attract boys’ attention?”
“How shameless…”
I was surrounded by them; they looked at me as if I were a monster.
“I didn’t…” I shook my head desperately, tears streaming down my face. “My mom bought me this dress; I just wanted to wear it for her…”
“Mom… Mom…” I cried out as I woke up.
Outside, the heavy rain continued to fall. I stared blankly out the window, tears flowing uncontrollably.
When I was young, I loved wearing the clothes my mother bought for me. They were all beautiful—pink princess dresses, sky-blue sweaters, white cotton jackets… Every time I put on one of those outfits, I would run to the mirror and twirl around, feeling like the happiest child in the world.
But that happiness didn’t last long. When I turned ten, my mother left. She left behind a room full of clothes and a bewildered me. Since then, I have never worn any of the clothes my mother bought for me again.
Even though there were many beautiful dresses at home, I never wore any of them again.
The next morning, I woke up to a clear blue sky outside. I changed into my summer uniform from Xiangyang No. 1 High School—a simple white shirt and a black pleated skirt—and then made myself breakfast.
While I was having breakfast, my grandmother called.
"Li Wan, how are you adjusting to the new school?"
"Um, it's pretty good," I smiled.
"That's great," my grandmother paused for a moment, "Your mother said she has already bought a house and found someone to clean it, so there shouldn't be any problems."
I sipped my soy milk and replied softly, "Mm."
"Li Wan, don't blame your grandmother for being talkative," she sighed, "Your mother... it's not easy for her either."
"I know," I put down my cup.
My mother doesn't like me.
Because I'm a girl.
What she wanted was a boy.
So after I was born, she left home in anger and didn't come back for several years.
Although she returned later, she remained indifferent towards me.
I remember the year I started middle school; she gave me a floral dress.
That was the first gift she had given me since coming back.
I was incredibly happy and would iron that dress every morning before carefully hanging it in the wardrobe.
But I never dared to wear it.
I was afraid—afraid that my classmates would mock me.
In the end, however, I did wear it.
As a result, I was teased all day long.
When I got home that evening, I cried very sadly.
My mother sat beside me and calmly said, "Li Wan, please don't blame me; I didn't want it to be this way either."
