Blood floated in the air as Ming Juan fell. At that moment, she even enjoyed the sensation of plummeting through the sky. The dark veil over her eyes brought her a long-lost feeling of warmth and an unprecedented sense of detachment...
"I caught her!"
"Protect George, move closer to Brother Miao..."
A snowflake unknowingly landed at the corner of Ming Juan's eye, its icy sting seeming to awaken her from her drowsiness. However, Ming Juan's consciousness could no longer hold on; her hands drooped, and her face fell into darkness as she completely succumbed to it.
Time rewinds to seven years ago.
People's University of U City
"Let the strings of thought dance and play the melody of growth! Welcome to the Class of 2053! Please prepare your admission notice and ID, and line up orderly at the registration desk. Our volunteer seniors will guide you into a brand new world!"
At the university entrance stood not only a long line of new students checking in but also cars filling the entire square. During this transition from summer to autumn, there was both the sparkle in the newcomers' eyes and the warmth on their shoulders, along with the unique crispness brought by the brownish-yellow leaves.
"Daughter, look at your university; it's magnificent!" Mom shook Yu Feiyao's arm excitedly.
"Mm, mm..." However, Yu Feiyao didn't even turn to look at her mother. She rolled down the car window and raised her newly bought DSLR camera towards a row of autumn trees nearby.
This angle was just right; the four o'clock sun hung perfectly above the treetops, with countless rays filtering through the leaves, wrapping around the autumn trees like a mother embracing her child.
Yu Feiyao adjusted the ISO settings, waiting for a leaf to fall onto the roof of the university library before pressing the shutter.
"Fei!" Mom pulled at her. "Look at the school; don't you think People's University of U City is really impressive?"
"I know," Yu Feiyao replied, sticking her head out and aiming her camera at the university's entrance. "I'm taking pictures."
"Yu Feiyao." Dad didn't scold her, but his serious tone startled Yu Feiyao enough to pull back quickly.
"I’ve told you many times that you must not stick your head out of the car no matter what." Dad gently pressed on the gas pedal, slowly moving closer to the car in front.
"Oh..." Yu Feiyao rolled her eyes. "You’re just worried about this thirty-six thousand RMB full-frame EOS R6 Mark II camera you bought; you never said anything like this before."
Dad seemed about to say something else when suddenly both mother and daughter were jolted by a sudden hard brake.
"Hey!" Mom immediately expressed her dissatisfaction. "How are you driving?"
After confirming that her camera hadn't been bumped, Yu Feiyao was about to join in on criticizing Dad when she saw a car squeezing into their lane and instantly froze.
"What do you think?" Dad simply released his grip on the steering wheel and respectfully waited for a Bentley Mulsanne to merge into their line.
"Wow..."
This wasn't just an exclamation from Yu Feiyao; this five-million RMB Bentley Mulsanne instantly became everyone's focus.
"Miss, there are quite a few cars; would you like to get out first?" Inside the Bentley Mulsanne, the driver pressed on the brakes and unlocked the holographic window for the lady in the back seat.
"Um... okay."
Like a white pearl fallen to earth, as the rear door opened amidst countless curious gazes, a pair of fair and slender legs slowly descended. Even her Daydream collaboration sneakers were in pristine white. Then, peeking out from just thirty degrees of the opened door was a head with wavy brown hair that quickly retreated back inside.
"Why are so many people looking at me?" The young lady asked timidly.
The driver, however, was quite opposite; he unceremoniously rolled down his window, lit a cigarette with a purple flower engraving on it, and smiled at passersby.
"Miss, this kind of treatment is something many people can only dream of," said the driver.
With no other choice, she picked up her handbag, adjusted her snow-white mink coat, stood up fully, and became even more eye-catching than their own car. The boys stared at her openly before quickly looking away; even girls forgot to adjust their outfits because no matter how they dressed up, they felt like they were torturing themselves compared to this beauty in white snow.
“Ming Juan!”
“Hmm? Fei?” Under the gaze of everyone, the beautiful woman with snow-white skin turned around, holding her handbag and blinking her surprised watery eyes.
“She’s so beautiful!” A man exclaimed, covering his eyes, only to be slapped by his wife immediately after.
“Ming Juan!” Yu Feiyao, excitedly bouncing in front of Ming Juan while holding a DSLR camera hanging around her neck, exclaimed, “You’re just too pretty! You… you’re simply a fairy descended to earth!”
Looking at Yu Feiyao's heart-filled gaze, Ming Juan felt she couldn’t act like a wealthy heiress at all. She quickly grabbed Yu Feiyao’s hand and said, “Alright, alright, stop saying that… I didn’t want to dress up like this; it’s too embarrassing!”
Yu Feiyao’s parents arrived behind them with her luggage. When Ming Juan saw this, she wanted to help carry it, but her parents panicked and retreated as if they had seen a plague, repeatedly saying, “No, no.” Ming Juan could only helplessly show her bright smile while glancing at the distant convoy made up of five Kawasaki motorcycles.
On the motorcycles, five men waved at their young lady.
These five were none other than Ming Juan’s father, uncle, elder uncle, second uncle, and cousin. They had driven over three hundred kilometers to escort Ming Juan’s special car to U City. They kept their distance as per Ming Juan’s request and were watching from afar.
The biggest difference between Ming Juan and all her relatives was that she had never felt proud of her background or considered herself an untouchable young lady. In fact, she felt somewhat inferior; whenever faced with compliments and flattery from others, Ming Juan always appeared to shy away.
“Xiao Xiao, you can take her luggage now,” Ming Juan’s father said on the phone.
“I really didn’t expect I would have such a connection with a wealthy young lady! We actually… actually got into the same university!” Yu Feiyao spread her hands and grinned widely with her round eyes wide open in surprise.
“Hey.” Ming Juan playfully pinched Yu Feiyao’s baby face and said, “You’ve been saying how connected we are all summer; now that we’ve met, you still have to say it? Haha.”
“Uh…” Yu Feiyao felt that being able to interact closely with this young lady in front of everyone was quite an honor. “I’m just excited, hehe.”
“Miss, I’ve brought down the luggage,” the driver said as he lifted two suitcases—one black and one white.
Ming Juan nodded and said to Yu Feiyao, “Let’s go; it’s time for us to see the world.”
“Oh my! It’s the world seeing you, My Lady!”
“Shh—if you keep saying that, I won’t be nice to you.”
“Hmm…” Yu Feiyao immediately covered her mouth and joined Ming Juan in lining up for new student registration.
Inside the university at the new student reception area:
Countless university students wearing red volunteer uniforms stood at their respective college reception desks like a wall of red against the vast marble floor in front of the library. Shuttle buses filled with new students kept arriving at the central circle's roadside; those getting off dragged their luggage toward their respective colleges.
Miao Chengmin stood on the marble pavement with his hands on his hips, sweating profusely. He had already helped new students from the Sports College move nearly eight loads of luggage.
Miao Chengmin dressed simply; beneath his volunteer uniform was a black training outfit he often wore paired with brown Nike sweatpants. Anyone who understood fashion could tell he was not one to particularly care about his appearance as a university student.
“Ouch! My poor back can’t take this kind of torture.”
Nearby, his dorm mate Li Tao bent over and rubbed his back while putting on a pitiful act in front of Miao Chengmin.
“Pfft.” Miao Chengmin pushed his head away and said, “Come on now, act normal.”
“Hahaha…” Li Tao suddenly jumped up, flexing his muscular chest which drew admiring glances from several first-year girls nearby.
“So how did it go? Chengmin?” Li Tao waved his brightly lit phone screen in front of him and said, “I got contact information from three girls!”
Miao Chengmin rolled his eyes disdainfully at him: “With your behavior? Ridiculous.”
Upon hearing this, Li Tao immediately put away his smile: “Hey—don’t say that! What’s wrong with a guy having some charm? How are you? Let me tell you; this year the Ming Family young lady is also enrolling at our school! I heard she’s incredibly beautiful and according to reliable online sources, her waist is only fifty-eight centimeters—fifty-eight! Just for that slim waistline; I’m determined to get her contact information!”
Miao Chengmin was left speechless by what he heard. He could hardly imagine how tired this person must be every night.
Another bus stopped in front of the volunteers. The volunteers gathered around, waiting for the new students to get off. However, to everyone's surprise, no one rushed to get off. Instead, two girls stepped down amidst the puzzled looks of the volunteers. One of them walked ahead with a smile, wearing an expensive mink coat and carrying a DSLR camera around her neck.
"That's her!"
While Miao Chengmin was still as confused and surprised as everyone else, Li Tao had already dashed up to her: "Let me help you... let me carry your luggage! Don't worry, from now on I am your personal bodyguard!"
"Uh... um... huh?" Yu Feiyao was startled by this whirlwind of a man, her smile frozen in place.
"Come on, come on, get off the bus." Just as Li Tao was about to gently push Yu Feiyao's back, he caught sight of her mink coat and quickly withdrew his hand as if it were on fire.
"Um... I have a friend..." Yu Feiyao pointed to Ming Juan, who was standing on the bus steps, looking down and playing with her hair.
"No problem!" Li Tao understood immediately and shouted back to Miao Chengmin, who was standing nearby, "Get over here! Hurry up and help the young lady's friend with her things!"
"But..." Miao Chengmin was stunned: weren't they only supposed to welcome new students from their own college?
Due to Li Tao's actions, everyone else became unhappy. Miao Chengmin noticed the impatient looks from the other volunteers and had no choice but to jog over and open the luggage compartment of the bus.
Bending down to grab the luggage, Miao Chengmin turned to Ming Juan and silently asked which bags were hers.
"The black and white ones," Ming Juan said timidly. "Um... thank you, senior."
"Ah, it's nothing," Miao Chengmin said as he grabbed the two suitcases. Ming Juan couldn't help but stare at the well-defined muscles on Miao Chengmin's arms. When he glanced over at her, she hurriedly covered her forehead with her hand.
"What's wrong?" Miao Chengmin asked with concern.
"Nothing... I'm just not feeling well," Ming Juan said, tugging at her tangled brown hair with a smile.
"Let's go, my little cutie!" Yu Feiyao almost revealed Ming Juan's identity as she turned around and waved at her. They were both from Landscape College.
"Ming?" Li Tao was instantly thrown into confusion, staring blankly at Yu Feiyao.
"Just a slip of the tongue, sorry!" Yu Feiyao said with an awkward smile.
"Go ahead!" Ming Juan waved too. "That coat is a gift for you."
"A gift for her?!" Everyone was shocked and turned their astonished gazes toward Ming Juan next to Miao Chengmin. That was a mink coat! She just gave it away with one sentence? What kind of international joke was that?!
"Gift..." Yu Feiyao was also frozen in place. She and Li Tao, who was already heartbroken beside her, trembled as they watched Ming Juan carefully follow Miao Chengmin toward the dormitory area in the distance.
