Han Weiting took me to the bridal shop, saying he wanted to help me choose a wedding dress. I couldn't help but think sarcastically that the person I used to fear the most was now taking me to pick out a wedding gown. Fate really loves to play tricks on people.
It seemed like Han Weiting could see through my thoughts. With a half-smile, he asked, "Do you know that keeping a man waiting for so long is quite impolite?" His words made me laugh, and the tension I had been feeling dissipated significantly. He reached out and patted my head affectionately, saying, "You should smile more; you look really beautiful when you do."
In front of the bridal shop, Han Weiting carefully held my hand as we stepped inside together. Many customers cast envious glances our way. He encouraged me to try on a few wedding dresses while he quietly sat nearby, waiting.
When I emerged from the fitting room, I caught a glimpse of astonishment in his eyes. He walked up behind me, wrapped his arms around me, rested his chin on my shoulder, and whispered, "Nuan Nuan, you look stunning."
The bridal shop was located within a private villa, which was lavishly decorated throughout. The first floor was opulent, with crystal chandeliers casting dazzling light over various styles of wedding dresses displayed on mannequins. I wasn't particularly interested in any of it.
I let Han Weiting and the designer discuss styles while an assistant took my measurements. Looking outside, I noticed a small garden in the backyard. As the assistant measured me with a tape, I grew a bit annoyed with the fuss and decided to lift my skirt and head towards the little garden at the back.
Honestly, I wasn't very keen on getting married. If I could, I would want to run away right now. I sat by a small pond, watching the little goldfish swim back and forth. I didn't know what I was thinking; my thoughts drifted far away.
It wasn't long before Han Weiting finished up and came looking for me. He approached with a cheerful smile and asked what I was thinking about.
I extended my wrist, revealing a circular scar. A flicker of pain crossed Han Weiting's eyes. He had burned me with a cigarette butt back in high school. At that time, he was quite popular at school, always surrounded by admirers wherever he went. He played basketball while I brought him water. But when he took the water from me, he poured it over my head and burned me with the cigarette butt.
He said, " Lin Nuannuan, are you stupid? You know I don't like you, yet you still bring me water?"
"Look at you, you don't even act like a girl," he questioned.
He asked me, "Does it still hurt?"
I shook my head and replied, "It hasn't hurt for a long time."
Han Weiting stared at the scar and silently took out a lighter. He lit a cigarette and pressed it against his own wrist. Frowning, he said, "Does it hurt like this?"
"You must have been in a lot of pain back then," I exclaimed. "Are you crazy?"
He looked at me with determination in his voice: "Let me take your pain for you, okay?"
I was speechless.
Suddenly, he pulled me into his arms with a serious expression: "If I could, I would want to share your suffering with you. I'm not afraid of your pain; what scares me is that your pain is something I caused."
I looked at him and retorted, "Haven't you already caused me enough pain?"
His tone was sincere: "That's why I'm trying to make amends now."
I huffed, "I'll reluctantly believe you this once."
He gently kissed my forehead and added playfully, "From now on, I'll burn myself every day so we can share the pain together. How about that?"
His words made me laugh as I lightly punched his chest: "What kind of ridiculous idea is that?"
He held my hand and gently kissed it near his lips, saying, "It's my idea, Silly Girl. I just want you to know that I will always be with you, no matter what happens."
I leaned on his shoulder and softly replied, "I know, I know..."
