Two years after leaving Jiangcheng, Li Ruyue often thought about that spring rain. She felt that she had been very brave back then, but sometimes she regretted it, wondering if listening to Wang Yueming would have made much of a difference, and if she wouldn't be overthinking things like she was now.
Recently, her mother had been complaining about how Zhang Kai's tutoring sessions had suddenly stopped and how they couldn't get in touch with Wang Yueming. Li Ruyue spoke up for them, saying they might be busy with something, but inside she felt a bit angry. She didn't expect Wang Yueming to become so petty; she even thought about calling him to confront him. But when she picked up her phone, that courage vanished without a trace. Li Ruyue suddenly realized that she no longer had the bravery and decisiveness she once had.
The next day, Zhang Kai hurried to her house to explain the reason for his delay. It turned out that he had fallen and fractured his arm while leaving yesterday, which caused him to spend quite some time at the hospital. Wang Yueming had gotten into trouble while on his way to pick him up; it wasn't supposed to involve him at all, but the other party insisted on making him pay. He refused, and as a result, he got entangled in the situation.
After hearing this, Li Ruyue felt a pang of guilt. She hadn't expected to misunderstand Wang Yueming and even called him petty.
"Are you okay?" Mother Li asked with concern.
Zhang Kai shook his head. "I'm fine; it just hurts a bit."
"Do you need to go to the hospital for a check-up?"
"No need," Zhang Kai smiled. "I'm a big guy; this little injury is nothing."
Mother Li nodded and asked, "Will you still be able to attend classes in the next few days?"
"Of course," Zhang Kai replied, "but I need to find a lawyer first."
Mother Li understood. "You need to deal with the compensation issue, right?"
Zhang Kai nodded.
Mother Li wrote him a note: "This is a lawyer I know; you can reach out to him."
Zhang Kai took it. "Thank you, Auntie."
"You're welcome," Mother Li smiled and added, "But you can take your time with the compensation issue; attending classes is more important."
Zhang Kai was taken aback and instinctively glanced at Li Ruyue.
Li Ruyue immediately understood. "How about this, Zhang Kai? You handle the compensation issue first, and then we can continue with the class."
Zhang Kai hesitated, "Is that okay?"
"What's wrong with that?" Li Ruyue smiled. "We're not in a hurry."
Hearing this, Zhang Kai felt relieved. "Alright, once I resolve this matter, we can continue with the class."
Li Ruyue nodded.
That evening, while Li Ruyue was having dinner, she suddenly heard her mother say, "Xiaoyue, didn't your classmate get injured? Aren't you going to call and check on them?"
Li Ruyue was taken aback. "…Huh?"
Mother Li looked at her. "What do you mean 'huh'? It's normal for classmates to care about each other."
Li Ruyue bit her lip. "…Oh."
She hesitated for a moment before picking up her phone and dialing Wang Yueming's number.
The call connected quickly.
Wang Yueming's voice came through the receiver, a bit low and hoarse. "Hello."
Li Ruyue held the phone tightly. "Are you... okay?"
Wang Yueming replied, "I'm fine, not dead."
Li Ruyue paused for a moment before asking, "How did this happen all of a sudden?"
Wang Yueming replied calmly, "I got brushed by a car while on my way to pick up Zhang Kai."
Li Ruyue frowned. "Then why does the other party want you to pay?"
Wang Yueming's tone remained steady. "He said I suddenly changed lanes, which caused him to hit me."
"That's impossible!" Li Ruyue exclaimed angrily. "It’s clearly his poor driving skills; how can he blame you?"
Wang Yueming chuckled lightly. "It doesn't matter; I haven't lost anything anyway."
Li Ruyue expressed concern, "Do you need to be hospitalized?"
Wang Yueming replied, "No need."
"Really?" Li Ruyue was still worried. "If you need help, I can come see you."
Wang Yueming suddenly fell silent.
After a long pause, he softly said, "...You want to come see me?"
Li Ruyue hesitated, "…Is that okay?"
Wang Yueming replied, "…Yes."
Li Ruyue paused and asked, "Which hospital are you in?"
Wang Yueming answered, "City People's Hospital."
Li Ruyue inquired, "Which bed number?"
Wang Yueming said, "302."
Li Ruyue responded, "Alright, I'll come to see you tomorrow."
Wang Yueming replied, "…Okay."
Just as Li Ruyue was about to hang up, Wang Yueming suddenly called out to her.
"Li Ruyue."
"Yes, what is it?"
Wang Yueming fell silent for a moment and lowered his voice, "…Do you still like me?"
Li Ruyue was taken aback.
She held the phone, unable to speak for a long time.
Wang Yueming didn't rush her and waited quietly.
After a long while, Li Ruyue finally found her voice, "…Why should I tell you?"
Wang Yueming softly said, "Because I want to see you."
Li Ruyue's heart suddenly raced.
She held the phone without saying anything.
"Wang Yueming," he continued, "I really want to see you."
Li Ruyue bit her lip and tried to stay calm, "…I'll go tomorrow."
Wang Yueming replied, "…Okay."
