I lay down with the blanket wrapped around me, but I still felt afraid inside.
“Xiao Yi…”
I tugged at Xiao Yi's sleeve and whispered his name.
Xiao Yi turned to look at me, raising an eyebrow.
“What’s wrong now?”
I shifted closer to Xiao Yi and said softly, “I’m scared.”
Hearing this, Xiao Yi chuckled lightly and offered me his sleeve.
“Hold onto this.”
“My knife can ward off evil.”
As I grasped Xiao Yi's sleeve, I finally felt a bit more at ease.
“Xiao Yi, why are you laughing at me?”
“I’m just afraid of ghosts; why do you mock me?”
Xiao Yi fell silent for a moment before responding, “Qian Qian, I’m not mocking you.”
“I’m just reminding you not to forget yourself.”
His words left me stunned.
“Xiao Yi, what do you mean by that?”
Xiao Yi sighed softly.
“Qian Qian, I have seen many women like you.”
“They chose to end their lives due to rumors or humiliation.”
“I remember my mother did the same thing years ago.”
“But in the end, what did she gain?”
“She was labeled a prostitute by those who pointed fingers at her.”
“And her child could never hold their head high.”
“Qian Qian, I don’t want you to become like that.”
“I want you to live, even if this world is difficult; I want you to survive.”
Xiao Yi's voice was gentle, but I could hear the bitterness of his past in his words.
I remember my youth when I stayed briefly in Yangzhou, holding a storybook and reading it aloud to Xiao Yi. I was reading Ghost Stories, which contained many Strange Stories. At that time, I was very scared, but Xiao Yi urged me to persevere. He said, "Qian Qian, if you are not afraid of these ghosts and monsters, then what is there to fear from others' slander?" At night, I hugged my blanket, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. I had read too many strange tales, and fear lingered in my heart. But I have always been afraid of ghosts. Only Xiao Yi knew this within the entire Wang residence. "Xiao Yi," I whispered his name. The room was very dark, and I couldn't see where Xiao Yi was. After a long while, I finally heard his voice. "What is it?" He entered with a candle and sat by my bedside.
"Xiao Yi, I can't sleep." Upon hearing this, Xiao Yi sighed. "Why can't you sleep? Is it because you are scared?" I nodded, feeling a bit embarrassed. Xiao Yi sighed again and took my hand in his warm palm. His hand was so warm that it made my cold hand feel better. "Do you want me to stay with you?" I nodded. "Then how would you like me to accompany you?"
In a moment of impulse, I said, "Sleep with me."
Xiao Yi was taken aback for a moment, seemingly surprised.
"Do you know what you're saying?"
I nodded, "I know."
Xiao Yi looked at me, remaining silent for a long time.
I didn't know what Xiao Yi was thinking; I just felt that he seemed a bit different.
"Forget it."
Xiao Yi took off his shoes and socks and lay down beside me.
"Let's sleep."
"With me here, you don't have to be afraid of anything."
I nodded and nestled into Xiao Yi's embrace.
Xiao Yi's arms were warm, making me feel very comfortable.
But I also realized that the closeness between Xiao Yi and me felt a bit too intimate.
"Xiao Yi."
"Mm?"
I looked at Xiao Yi and suddenly asked, "Do you like me?"
Xiao Yi was stunned for a moment, lowering his gaze to look at me.
"Why do you ask that?"
I smiled and said, "Xiao Yi, you're lying to me."
"You haven't really lost your memory, have you?"
Upon hearing this, Xiao Yi chuckled softly.
"So you've been deceiving me all along."
I bit my lip, unsure of what to say next.
