The next day, I began practicing in a coach car on the outskirts of the city, accompanied by Lu Hao. Due to my nerves, I messed up the sequence right from the start and was scolded harshly by Coach Liu Ming.
"What are you doing? You can't even remember such a simple sequence!" Liu Ming exclaimed in frustration.
"I'm sorry, I... I'm just too nervous," I explained.
"Nervous about what? It's not your first time driving," Liu Ming said disdainfully.
"I..." I opened my mouth but couldn't find the words.
It wasn't my first time driving, but I always felt nervous, especially with the instructor sitting next to me, which made it easier to make mistakes.
"Do it again!" Liu Ming ordered.
"Yes," I replied.
I took a few deep breaths, gathered my courage, and continued practicing. However, due to my nerves, I made another mistake and was scolded again by Liu Ming.
I turned to Lu Hao; he was smiling at me and said, "Don't be afraid, take it slow."
I nodded and tried to calm myself down. This time, I finally managed to avoid mistakes and completed the entire course smoothly.
"Not bad," Liu Ming commented.
I sighed in relief and wiped the sweat from my forehead.
"Let's take a break," Lu Hao suggested.
"Okay," I nodded, unbuckled my seatbelt, and got out of the car.
We sat down on a nearby bench; I took a sip of water and sighed.
"Are you tired?" Lu Hao asked.
"Not really, just feeling very nervous," I replied.
"Why are you nervous?" Lu Hao inquired.
"I don't know; I'm just really nervous," I said.
"Maybe it's because you care too much about your performance," Lu Hao suggested.
"Maybe," I sighed again.
"Don't worry; you'll get better with time," Lu Hao reassured me.
"Mm." I nodded.
We took a break for a while and then continued practicing driving.
After a morning of practice, I finally became somewhat more skilled. Although I still made mistakes, I was no longer as nervous as before.
At noon, Lu Hao took me out for lunch, and in the afternoon, he accompanied me for more practice.
In the evening, we returned to the city, and Lu Hao dropped me off at school.
"Thank you for accompanying me to practice driving," I said to Lu Hao.
"You're welcome," Lu Hao smiled. "I'm also happy to help you."
"Well, I'm going in now. Be careful on your way back," I said.
"Okay, bye-bye," Lu Hao replied.
"Bye-bye." I waved at him and turned to walk into the campus.
---
That night, I sat at my desk, staring blankly at the computer.
My gaze fell on the cactus next to me; it was something I had bought a few days ago and placed on my desk as decoration.
As I looked at the cactus, Lu Hao's face appeared in my mind.
He looked so bright when he smiled, just like this cactus.
Suddenly, I really wanted to see him.
I took out my phone, opened WeChat, and clicked on our chat interface.
"What are you doing?" I typed.
After waiting for a while, he didn't reply.
Maybe he's busy.
I closed the chat window and casually scrolled through Weibo but couldn't help but open our chat interface again.
Still no reply.
I felt a bit disappointed and tossed my phone aside, continuing to stare blankly at the computer.
After a while, my phone suddenly vibrated.
I quickly picked it up; it was a message from Lu Hao.
"I was just taking a shower," he explained.
"Oh," I replied with a simple word.
"What about you? What are you doing?" he asked.
"Nothing much, just sitting here," I replied.
"Haha, daydreaming?" he asked.
"Pretty much," I said.
"Then send me a photo so I can see," he said.
"Why?" I asked.
"I want to see what you look like when you're daydreaming," he answered.
"..." I was speechless, "I must look terrible when I'm daydreaming."
"No way, I think you look great no matter what," he replied.
I looked at the words on the screen and couldn't help but smile.
"Really?" I asked.
"Of course," he replied.
"Alright then," I said.
I picked up my phone, took a selfie, and sent it to him.
"How is it?" I asked.
"Very pretty," he replied.
"Thank you," I said with a smile.
"You're welcome," he replied.
We chatted like this for a long time until I was too sleepy to keep my eyes open, and reluctantly said goodnight to him.
Lying in bed, however, I couldn't fall asleep at all.
My mind was filled with Lu Hao's image—his smile, his gaze, every word he said echoed in my ears.
I don't remember when I fell asleep; I only recall that before drifting off, there was still a smile on my lips.
