The results of the exam came out, and once again I topped my grade.
But instead of congratulations, I was met with mocking gazes from my classmates.
"Jiang Ming, come with me," my homeroom teacher said after class.
I followed her to the office.
Also accompanying us was the vice director's son, Cheng Xin.
I heard the homeroom teacher smilingly say to Cheng Tong, "Congratulations, Cheng Tong."
Cheng Tong raised an eyebrow, looking pleased with himself. "Thank you, teacher."
The homeroom teacher turned to me, her smile fading as she awkwardly began, "Jiang Ming, you..."
I cut to the chase and asked, "Teacher, I scored first; is the school going to expel me?"
At this remark, the teachers in the office perked up their ears, their expressions revealing their curiosity.
The homeroom teacher's face darkened as she stammered, "Well... Jiang Ming, please calm down.
The spots for recommendations have already been decided; Cheng Xin is one of them. As for you... we need to talk."
I retorted, "My grades are better than Cheng Tong's; why wasn't I selected?"
The homeroom teacher frowned. "Jiang Ming, why don't you listen? Cheng Xin was personally designated by the director of the Education Bureau; you need to be sensible."
I scoffed, "Just because his dad is the vice director means he can be recommended to a top high school even if his grades are average and he bullies classmates?"
Cheng Tong's face turned pale with anger, his eyes flashing with resentment. "Jiang Ming, don't push your luck!"
"Wasn't the lesson I gave you before enough?"
"It seems your memory isn't good; do you need me to remind you?"
His threat brought back memories of that dark night.
That evening after school, I was cornered by Cheng Tong in the boys' restroom.
He called a group of thugs who beat me up and stripped me of my clothes while taking photos.
I was covered in bruises and cried under my blanket all night long.
The next day, I didn't go to class.
Cheng Tong came unscathed. He smugly said to me, "Jiang Ming, this is what happens when you offend me."
"Next time, it won't be as simple as just beating you up."
Later, I learned that Cheng Tong was unharmed because his father donated five million to the school. He acted recklessly because no one had ever taught him that there are consequences for wrongdoing.
I calmed down and coldly asked, "So the recommendation spots are already predetermined?"
I should have guessed it earlier. The homeroom teacher favored Cheng Tong; in every exam, big or small, he was always first. Even when I ranked first in the entire school, the teacher would only give me a few half-hearted compliments.
This time, there were two recommendation spots: one for Cheng Tong and the other for Zhu Yufeng, who had consistently ranked second in our grade. The homeroom teacher said earnestly, "Jiang Ming, you need to consider the bigger picture. Your grades may be better than Cheng Tong's, but your family background isn't as good as his, and you don't have as many resources. Even if you get into a top high school, you might not stand out. It's better to let Cheng Tong have this opportunity; it will be good for you, for him, and for everyone."
Cheng Tong looked at me with disdain: "Jiang Ming, the teacher is right. Someone like you, coming from a slum, doesn't deserve to compete with me."
I clenched my fists and suppressed the urge to strike him. Taking a deep breath, I said, "Since the recommendation spots are already predetermined, please have Zhu Yufeng come here so I can compete with her. If I win, then that spot goes to me."
The homeroom teacher was furious: "Jiang Ming, why won't you listen?"
"This matter is not for you to decide."
I stubbornly replied, "My grades are no worse than anyone else's; why shouldn't I have a say?"
"If the school won't provide fairness, then I'll fight for it myself."
"Teacher, I'm making this clear today: I am determined to secure Zhu Yufeng's recommendation spot."
With that, I turned and walked away.
