Sea Witch Elder 3: Do you believe in God?

Gu Yan recalled the question his grandfather once asked him: Do you believe in God? How did he answer back then? Perhaps he did not believe. After all, the term "God" embodies the helpless cries of the weak when facing adversity, a spiritual refuge during times of powerlessness and despair. Praying to God signifies a yearning for something unattainable, something that occupies one's thoughts day and night, ultimately leading to reliance on the void for solace. 0

The scene of pleading with a deity, murmuring repeatedly, "I believe in the Almighty Lord, please bestow your grace upon your followers, please fulfill my wishes," was something Gu Yan looked down upon. Yet at this moment, he found himself wishing for the existence of a god. 0

The Azure Tail Siren was so perfect, resting about ten meters from the side of the boat. Its head arched gracefully, and its elongated eyes revealed curiosity as it quietly gazed at Gu Yan. The fish tail, as long as an adult's leg, swayed gently in the water. 0

From the high deck, Gu Yan had a perfect vantage point to look down at the Siren. He could clearly see its smooth facial features, slender waist, and the tail hidden beneath the water. Gu Yan dared not speak; any sound felt like a desecration, fearing it might disturb the water spirit. He opened his mouth but made no sound, remaining still as he watched the Siren. He greedily scanned every detail, wanting to remember everything. 0

The Azure Tail Siren seemed to emit a light laugh, and with the sea breeze came the faint sound of its tail splashing against the surface. It slowly curled its lips into a smile that mixed brightness with intrigue. Then it elegantly lifted its tail from underwater and slapped it against the surface, sending sparkling droplets flying. With that momentum, it dove beneath the waves. 0

In an instant, before Gu Yan could react, the Siren vanished without a trace. He stepped forward in panic but was stopped by the sturdy Metal Railing; after just one glance, the water returned to its unchanged calmness. The same moonlight spilled over the sea, as if gilded with gold. However, this beauty that was hard to see during the day now appeared particularly dull. 0

It was as if everything was telling him that what had just happened was merely a dream—a dream that ended without incident. The sweat he secreted during his excitement dampened his palms. Gu Yan slowly opened his hand to feel the moist sensation before shifting his gaze from his hand to the ocean and finally exhaling deeply. 0

Gu Yan could not remember how he returned to the lounge inside the cabin. When he lay back on the soft bed again, he saw the lavishly decorated ceiling. His mind was in disarray, filled with mixed thoughts. 0

He stared at a decorative painting on the wall depicting war—a Western-style oil painting with bold and vibrant colors. A triumphant general raised a sharp spear in one hand while controlling a warhorse with the other; amidst fluttering flags lay a corpse abandoned under hoofs after being pierced by the general's weapon. 0

He felt like that corpse with a pierced heart; in their brief encounter, the Siren had effortlessly struck him down and galloped away without concern. Before he could even attempt to stop it, he had already lost his ability to retaliate. 0

Eventually, Gu Yan slowly closed his eyes. In that moment before dawn fully arrived, when sky and sea were still chaotic, he finally drifted into sleep. 0
