A deep voice came through the phone, urgent and anxious. "Master Du, something's wrong! There's been an incident at the dock!" Du Ming's expression darkened instantly as he hung up, a sharp glint flashing in his eyes.
"What happened?" I asked, putting down the medical records with concern.
"There’s been an issue at the company; I need to go immediately," Du Ming said as he grabbed his coat. "You should sleep; don’t wait for me."
I held onto his hand. "What’s so urgent? Let me go with you."
Du Ming hesitated for a moment. "No need; you should rest early. I'll be back once I handle it." He gently patted the back of my hand before turning and leaving the study.
Watching his retreating figure, a wave of unease washed over me. Ever since he received that mysterious phone call last time, he had become increasingly busy, often returning home late at night, sometimes not coming back at all. I sensed he was hiding something from me, but I didn’t dare to ask too much and could only support him silently.
The next morning, I was jolted awake by a frantic doorbell. I opened the door to find Bai Wei standing there, breathless. "Lingxi, it's bad! Something major has happened!"
My heart sank. "What is it?"
"Have you seen today’s news?" Bai Wei said anxiously. "The new drug you developed has caused a crisis!"
I quickly opened my phone and checked the news app. The headline read: "Shock! Renowned healer Guo Lingxi's new drug causes severe adverse reactions in multiple patients!"
I was stunned. How could this happen? My new drug had undergone rigorous clinical trials; how could there be such a problem?
I clicked on the news details and found claims that I had engaged in serious data falsification during the drug development process in pursuit of quick fame, leading to significant quality issues with the new drug. Dozens of patients were hospitalized due to this situation, and their conditions were critical.
I felt dizzy; this was absurd! How could I joke with patients' lives? This new drug represented countless hours of hard work; I wanted nothing more than to help more people! Struggling against my anger and despair, I read through the news report carefully, trying to find any flaws. Suddenly, a photo caught my eye—it was Nurse Liu! She was a nurse at our hospital who had participated in the clinical trials for this new drug.
In the photo, Nurse Liu looked glamorous, holding a designer handbag—completely different from her usual modest appearance. The report stated that Nurse Liu had accepted a large bribe and deliberately altered clinical trial data; she had been arrested by the police.
I suddenly understood: someone was framing me from behind! But who? And why would they do this? Could it be...
A figure flashed through my mind—Green Tea.
Ever since I exposed her true nature at the charity gala, Green Tea had harbored resentment and was looking for an opportunity to retaliate against me. With her connections and means, it wouldn’t be difficult for her to bribe a nurse and alter some data.
Thinking of this, I immediately dialed Du Ming's number to inform him about what was happening. However, all I got was a cold mechanical voice on the other end: "Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy; please try again later..."
I kept dialing Du Ming's number repeatedly but couldn’t get through. My heart sank further as an ominous premonition crept over me.
At that moment, Bai Wei suddenly exclaimed, "Lingxi, look!"
Following her gaze to the television screen, I saw breaking news: outside Du Ming's company building, thick smoke billowed into the sky as flames erupted...
"No!" I cried out in despair and fainted.
When I woke up again, I found myself lying in a hospital bed. Bai Wei was by my side; upon seeing me awake, she grasped my hand tightly with tears streaming down her face. "Lingxi, you're finally awake! Do you know you've been unconscious for a whole day and night?"
I struggled to sit up, but a wave of dizziness washed over me, leaving me feeling weak all over. Bai Wei quickly supported me and asked with concern, "How do you feel? What's wrong?"
I shook my head and hoarsely asked, "What about Du Ming? How is he?"
Bai Wei's expression suddenly turned grim. She stammered, "Du Ming... he... we don't know how he is..."
My heart sank, an ominous premonition rising within me. I grabbed Bai Wei's hand and anxiously asked, "What happened? Please tell me!"
Tears streamed down Bai Wei's face again as she choked out, "There was an explosion at the company building. Du Ming... he... he's trapped inside..."
"No!" I bolted upright, the image of Du Ming being engulfed by flames still vivid in my mind. Outside the window, the sun shone brightly, but I felt no warmth. Du Ming, are you okay?
"Lingxi, you're finally awake!" Bai Wei entered the hospital room holding a bowl of congee. Seeing me awake, her face was filled with relief.
"What about Du Ming?" I grabbed her hand tightly and asked urgently.
"He's still trapped at the company; the rescue team is working hard to find him," Bai Wei said, her eyes red. "Don't worry; good people have their blessings."
How could I not worry? Du Ming, you must be safe! I silently prayed in my heart.
However, waiting was a long torment. News reports about the explosion flooded in, yet there was still no word about Du Ming. I fought to suppress my inner fear and unease, trying to calm myself down. I knew this wasn't the time for sadness and despair; I had to pull myself together and find out who framed Du Ming!
My intuition told me that this explosion was definitely connected to the new drug incident. I carefully recalled everything that had happened recently, trying to find any clues. Green tea, mysterious phone calls, Nurse Liu... these seemingly unrelated pieces of information now felt like a massive net tightly enclosing both Du Ming and me.
"Lingxi, what are you thinking about?" Bai Wei asked with concern as she noticed my furrowed brow.
"I'm thinking about who wants to harm us," I looked up at Bai Wei, a glint of determination flashing in my eyes. "If they dare to target us, they shouldn't blame me for fighting back!"
"What do you plan to do?" Bai Wei looked at me worriedly. "You haven't recovered yet; don't act impulsively."
"I'm fine." I clenched my fists, a resolute light shining in my eyes. "I will find out who is behind this and seek justice for Du Ming!"
I dialed a number. "Hello, Xuanfeng? Help me look into someone..."
